will cosmetic contouring straighten my front teeth

Q. What is cosmetic contouring? Does it help to straighten teeth? I have good teeth but it’s just my 2 front teeth are slightly forward and the one next to it is slightly back. The rest of my teeth are ok.I was hoping that i would not need to wear braces to fix this. Can anyone please advise me as to what i can do?

A. Dear H,
thank you for your question. Recontouring your teeth could definitely help improve the appearance. However it probably wouldn’t make your teeth completely straight.

Recontouring involves shaving away very small amounts of enamel on the tooth. If too much is taken away the dentine (second layer of the tooth) begins to show. This layer is darker than enamel and there the tooth can look discoloured. Also the nerve endings of a tooth are in dentine so the tooth can also get sensitive.

You could always try the recontouring first and see how you like the look of your teeth. If it doesn’t give you the result that you want then I think you should consider braces. They don’t necessarily have to be fixed to your teeth. Invisalign may be an option if your teeth are only mildly crowded. These are removable braces which may not be so bad or intrusive to wear.

I hope this answers your question

Kind regards
