Why is the adult teeth yellowish compared to baby teeth?

Q. My granddaughter is eight and her second front teeth (well the first one in any case) is coming through a yellow colour. Is there a problem here and can this be resolved by any kind of dentistry. Her first teeth were quite white.

A. Baby teeth always look whiter than adult teeth due to the different optical properties of the enamel and the relative difference of dentine to enamel proportion.  When the adult teeth are all there the contrast will not be obvious.  If they still look yellow she can have them bleached when she is older
