Which are better lava crowns or porcelain bonded metal crowns

Q. Hi, I’ve had porcelain veneers on my front tooth for last 5 years and now need to replace with a crown. I am 33 and would appreciate any advice regardin ‘lava’ crowns versus the ‘porcelain bonded metal’ crowns.

A. Lava crowns are made from a Zirconium core for strength and a porcelain covering baked on top. The advantage of these over standard crowns is that they allow a better transmission of light through the tooth. Provided the underlying tooth is not too dark you are more likely to get a better colour match to your surrounding dentition . On the other hand a well made porcelain/metal crown can look extremely good and they have been around for a long time. Having said that , if it was my mouth, I would generally opt for a Lava crown over a porcelain/metal crown.
