What will happen now that I have been diagnosed with receding gums?

Q. I have just returned from a routine visit to my Dentist. I know I have receeding gums & xrays show bone erosion. I smoke. I visit the hygienist every 3 months & have just had the first session of gum packing. My Dentist tells me the teeth are very clean, & have good dental hygiene. What can I expect to happen now as I gather there is no cure. Many thanks,,
A. Following correct gum treatment regular (3-monthly) visits to the hygienist gives you the best chance of keeping the status quo.  If you could stop smoking this would greatly increase your chances of keeping your teeth.
