Hi,

Holes on the side of the tooth can be caused by caries, overbrushing (i.e for too long or too hard),erosion from acidic drinks, grinding or a combination of these. Cavities that are caused by grinding are similar in appearance to cavities caused by overbrushing. They are usually at the margin where the tooth meets the gum and can sometimes be more sensitive when brushing or having cold drinks/foods. Holes caused by decay will usually have a grey/black appearance. Cavities caused by erosion will usually have a smooth, glossy, dented appearance.
Hope this helps. Thank you for your enquiry.
