what is the difference between porcelain crowns and vinyl crown

Q. Hello, I have recently had to go to have a old crown measured for a new one, im not entirely sure what the old one was made of. It had lasted me the best part of 12 years, it just discoloured over time. My current dentist said he cant give me an exact colour match to my own teeth and it will be a Vinyl crown. I am feeling very apprehensive about my new crown, as I am not only paying a lot of money, but it is one of my two front teeth, so I will feel very concious of smiling like I was with my old one. Can you advise me on what i should ask my dentist to do if i am dissatisfied with my new crown once i have it fitted. Also what is the difference between a Porcelain and a Vinyl Crown? Thank you

A. The permanent crown will definately not be made of vinyl- perhaps that is what your dentist may be using as a temporary material whilst you are waiting for your new crown to be constructed???
For the front tooth- I would strongly recommend an all ceramic crown. Discuss your concerns with your dentist first though and make sure that you understand the whole treatment process first. If you new crown does not look aesthetically pleasing, then I’m sure the dentist will not permanently cement it before YOU are happy. You need to speak up loud and clear though- because once you consent to having the crown fitted, it’s too late.
Hope this has helped.
