A hemisection on a tooth is not a common procedure- but can still be done by specialist endodontist, periodontist or an experienced dentist.
The procedure involves sectioning a tooth through the furcation- dividing a molar tooth into 2. This is often done when decay has reached into the root divide (furcation) or bone loss has occurred in the area.
The sections are the assessed and are often crowned. Please note that the tooth will need to have been root filled initially for this to be successful.
This procedure CANNOT be done on the upper molars, as the teeth have 3 roots- as opposed to the lower molars only having 2.
I personally wouldn’t recommend this treatment as I don’t believe that the success rate is anything as good as having a dental implant.
