What Can I Give To My Granddaughter When She Gets Her Braces Tightened?

Q.
Hi Dr Patel, I hope you can help my granddaughter. What can I give to my granddaughter for the pain caused by the tightening of the brace every 4 weeks she’s in agony for 3 days after it’s done, her mouth is all swollen and she says she can’t go on with having it. She’s 15 years old. They have put blue blocks on the back teeth this time which is making it more sore. Please give us advice. She has been eating ice poles which seem to soothe the pain but this is only temporary relief. She is saying she has had enough. I hope you can help. Thank you for taking the time to listen to us.

Hello and thank you for writing in and getting in touch. Unfortunately it can be a tough period, the only thing she can do is stick it out and ask her orthodontist for some pain relief such as paracetamol. I’m sure it will all be worth it in the end when she has a lovely straight smile. I hope this helps and I hope she sticks with it. Best wishes, Dr Riten Patel BDS.
