What can i do to stop sucking my tongue do you have any suggestion?

Q. I’ve been sucking my tongue for years now and I’m 32 years of age. I have tried stopping but it’s done subcontiously (ms) because I do it in my sleep. Sometimes, I do it when I’m really tired. I was wondering what can I do to prevent sucking my tongue. I’m going to get braces, but there is no point if I can’t stop sucking my tongue. I’ve heard about different plates/guards that can prevent me from tongue sucking. I would like to get one but unsure which one is best for me. I don’t want to get the one that I will have to wear 24hrs for a year. Do you have any suggestions???

A.

  1. I would definitely discuss this with your orthodontist before your braces as tongue habits can make your finished orthodontic result more likely to relapse.
Definitely ask to have a fixed wire retainer at the end of your treatment, as regards to wearing an appliance to stop you sucking your tongue/thumb at same time as wearing braces this would be difficult

This may sound crazy or far fetched to you. Here is my testimony. I was a tongue sucker for over 45 years. I was teased in childhood about this, lost potential boyfriends because of it. I tried but could not control this behavior. Then I became a born again Christian. Sometime later, I don’t know when, I realized I was not sucking my tongue anymore. Praise God! I know if he did it for me he will do it for you too!

Hi,

I am 43 year old woman and have had the same problem, with sucking my tongue during my sleep now for nearly a year.

It strips the top layers off of my tongue and for several days my taste is somewhat dulled and i don’t get food/drink flavours fully. Until the top layers i’ve stripped off my tongue grow back. But then i’ll do it again – it’s a horrid repeating cycle.

I have been to my Dr who doesn’t seem to know what to do, mentioning that there are no creams for it, but not actually helping.

I visit my dentist regularly and they haven’t mentioned it or my mouth, though i thought it would be more a GP thing than dentist, so who should i go to for help – Any ideas!!

I am a 32 years old Nigerian lawyer and i have continued to suck my tongue, or rather the tongue sucks lol , it is a subconscious act. In reply to what Val Smith wrote about their fears on their 9 year-old being affected academically by his tongue sucking, I am tempted to think that the problem may derive from other factors. On the contrary, my tongue sucking has helped me academically. It takes my reasoning and concentration deeper, helps me to tackle most academic challenges effortlessly, and placed me top of my graduating university and law school classes. But it has not helped me much when it comes to taking up things generally perceived to be difficult. I’m always eager to take them up. I immigrated to United States from Nigeria in 2004, abandoned my legal practice, and have decided to delve into the medical field. I’ll be graduating next semester with a major in biology, a minor in chemistry, and an excellent GPA. I plan to apply to medical school in 2011. My tongue sucking has never been an impediment.

Hi , If you have been doing it all your life, then it is something that is perfectly normal for you and is not detrimental for your health. If you want to get a professional opinion, you can see an orthodontist who can check if your tongue thrust is affecting your anterior teeth position

I have the same problem. 21 and sucking tongue? Not cute. I have been trying to stop for years! I’ve prayed numerous times. Even if I catch myself doing it, it’s hard to stop because for some reason it feels good. Now I have a overbite because of it & your teeth skiing on your lip is not cute at all for a young lady. I hear about the plates, braces, invisalign etc. My question is do these things just straighten, & keep things out the way? or does it actually STOP me from doing this unattractive habit? Perhaps I’ll contact a dentist for more info. That’s all we can do folks.

Zara Says :

The way to kick the habit is to associate your tongue sucking with a negative consequence. For example, have a simple hair tie around your wrist (the one with the little metal bar) (or even an elastic band). Every time you feel you want to suck your tongue or even begin doing it subconsciously, pull the band out and let it hit you around the wrist. After a month or so, you will begin associating pain with sucking your tongue and eventually it will stop. I had been sucking my tongue for 25 years before I tried this and it works. Good Luck

Wow I had no idea that there were so many others with the same problem. I’ve sucked my tongue for as long as I can remember and because of it my teeth are crooked and so is my lip. I absolutely hate that I do it and I am 29 yrs old and cant stop. Its very subconscious and I do it at all times of the day, whether im tired, sleepy or whatever. Unless my mind is concentrated on it or my mouth is engaged in activity like talkin or eating, I will eventually start sucking my tongue. I also play with my ears and have done both since birth. I always thought the tongue habit was a result of not using a pacifier as a baby because I rarely cried because I played with my ears so I comforted myself. Therefor my parents rarely pacified me, as for the ear thing I have no idea why I do that.

I am more aware of it in public as an adult and I can catch myself and not do it in public anymore, but I have no control over it while I sleep. I am lucky it did not mess up my teeth. jameela hottie Says :

I have always sucked my tongue for as long as i can remember. I am now 26 years old and still can’t stop. I have worn braces between ages of 16-19 for 3 years because my tongue sucking caused an open bite (where your tongue can be pushed through your top and bottom teeth while you have your teeth clenched). I was given retainers after my braces were removed and invisiline for when i’m going out. You would think there is a mouth guard or dental plate that can be used to stop this behavior but there is none..i still do it and my teeth have reverted..i still have my retainers and i use them. it does help getting my teeth back to a decent looking state but to be honest they are annoying and painful so i avoid using them and some times i forget but when i do use them continuously its worse for me because it is actually pushing your teeth back and your not supposed to brush your teeth and eat with them on so everytime you have to take them off..omg its like trying to pull your teeth out thats not loose[painfullll]. I have tried all forms of guards and gadgets from my ortodontist(and i’m from NY so you know its probably some of the best old and modern techniques that was tried)..they made devices to keep my tongue back and it just looked like a cage in the back of my braces that made me talk funny..and worst of all my tongue always found a way to get around them to the sweet spot( all tongue suckers know the sweet spot). I have had enough of this and I’m afraid of this constant rocking of my teeth back and forth suck my tongue: push it out….put on my retainers: push them back in…im afraid that in the long run it can cause my teeth to become loosend so I am currently looking into something that i heard works for all types of habits INCLUDING OURS….HYPNOSIS PEOPLE im currently looking into this form of help so that it wont happen in my sleep or when im focusing or daydreaming…hopefully this will help me….AND I hope this iformation was helpfull to all my tongue suckers!!!!!!!!! good luck on your journey!

Raven Says :

Honestly, aside from causing an overbite (or potential jaw displacement…which granted is something to consider) I don’t find anything wrong with sucking my tongue. But I still try and keep my behavior to myself and will try and do it lightly in public so people do not notice. I am 28 years old, and currently have a 3.8 average in college so I would not consider it to be an issue for my studies, either. We aren’t putting our hands to our mouths and sucking our fingers, so the germ scare isn’t there. I have always had this habit, and I usually cannot control it as well when I am tired. I literally have to suck my tongue and twirl/play with my hair to go to sleep at night. If I try not to, I toss and turn until I finally give in and then I can finally sleep fully. While I don’t think this is an addiction that is life or relationship threatening, it can be seriously damaging to the ego/psyche…particularly if we are being teased over it. But I wouldn’t say that it has ever caused me to hurt, lie, cheat, steal…I’ve never lost a job over it and I certainly haven’t gone down any other crazy path of addiction. I was really excited to find a group of people that actually have this habit…my family had me convinced I was ‘special’ (and not in a good way). Thanks for being open and honest when this addiction is so easy to conceal!

I really want to stop to get my teeth straight and to stop looking like an idiot it really annoys me when people bring or up. I honestly thought I was the only one. Hi, I have a VERY small mouth which gives my face an unusual look. If I put my lips together it’s barely wider than the legth of the tip of my thumb. When I go to the dentist they can barely fit their hands in to complete any work. My chin and nose appear large. Especially my chin and my smile just doesn’t look nice. I’m really self concious about it. People often make comments like, ‘Wow your mouth is so small!’ Yeah thanks! My teeth themselves are ok but they are also very weak and have ground down over the years so they seem short. Would there be a procedure that could correct this and give me a fuller/wider mouth.

I have been sucking my tongue all my life, and it caused ALOT of problems in my life. I am 22 years old with 2 kids and a husband, and still suck my tongue! My jaw started sticking out when I was around 4 or 5 because of my constant tongue sucking! And because I have such a bad underbite all the boys would call me ugly and hideous. It didn’t help that I was 5’11 in jr high with red frizzy hair. One boy would follow me around school calling me “The Blaire Witch”. Luckily I was able to keep people from knowing I sucked my tongue, I trained myself to not do it in public. It was very hard though. I couldn’t wear pretty dresses or skirts because random boys I wouldn’t even know would come up to me and tell me that I’m too ugly to wear that. Some kids even mistook me as special needs because of my jaw. I only WISH it was my teeth that was effected, at least you can hide that, but my teeth, although a little crooked, are strong and white. Since I’m so tall with curly red hair, it was hard for me to dissapear. To this day, I can’t look at myself in the mirror without hating the image staring back at me. And my jaw was caused by my tongue sucking, no one else on either side of my family sucks their tongue or has an underbite. It’s really horrible that, above all of this, my older sister is a model. Literally she’s a model! She gets paid for her beauty! My husband thinks I’m beautiful, but I just can’t get over my low self esteem, and that abuse from other kids, just destroyed a potentially smart, beautiful girl! I believe I would be pretty if I didn’t have my underbite! It sucks!! (no pun intended)

I’m really glad to see that it’s just not me anymore lol. I’m a 18 year old african american girl from GA and the only person I’ve known to suck their tongue. I’ve been doing it since I was a baby and it has really affected me. My teeth were once very straight and pretty and now their all spaced and pushed out. I’m pursuing invisilign but my dentist said braces would not help me because my jaw is the problem. I’m going to see an orthodontist in a few days for more information on it. My dentist said the surgery would be $50, 000 which is ridiculous. If you really put your mind to stopping you can. I stopped for one year when i was about 16. I started back and then stopped for about another year. I’ve started back now but I’m trying to stop. It definitely is really hard because it seems uncontrollable like a drug and I don’t feel comfortable if I’m not doing it. You may find that when you become really relaxed or comfortable you will do it automatically and feel you cant stop, my tongue even trusts harder. For example when I’m at my grandmother’s house and around her. I also do it alot when I’m in a new or stressful situation. I catch my cats doing it sometimes for some reason lol. To the moms you should really stop your kids because I really wish my mom would have stopped me when I was younger because of how it has affected my teeth and your child can become reliant on tongue sucking to comfort them.

It kind of makes me sad to see so many people hate sucking their tongue so much. I’m 24, been doing it since I was a baby. I guess it’s a habit I don’t mind, and actually enjoy, because I can control it in public. I can understand wanting to stop if it’s uncontrollable. It’s my comfort though, what puts me to sleep, so I have no problem with it. I did have to have braces for several years because of my underbite, but my brother did as well, and he never sucked his tongue. Mine was considerably worse though. I ended up having surgery to reposition my top jaw. That was 8 years ago, and my teeth and my bite are still where they should be. I wish I had some advice to help others have more control over it =/ But it’s honestly nice to know I’m not the only person out there who sucks my tongue.

I am in my 30’s and have been sucking my tongue all my life, since I was a baby. This caused my teeth to have an anterior open bite and also lead to speech problem. I wore the metal cage retainer for a few years as a child. Along with the retainer I went to speech therapy. This helped me a lot to be able to have more control over the placement of my tongue. In speech therapy , we would practice the normal placement of my tongue. How do a normal people mouths look when it is open and when it is closed. How a tongue is supposed to lay (it should lie flat on the bottom of the mouth and stop before it touches your teeth. If you lift your tongue ,do you feel the lump under your tongue. The tip of your tongue is supposed to touch the lump and go no further. The rest of your tongue is supposed to lay flat on the bottom of your mouth without touching none of your teeth. if your tongue is not lying flat then you need to practice swallowing the rest of the tongue down your throat. so we would practice that over and over everyday. I would do tongue exercises. I practiced recognizing when I am unconsciously sucking my tongue, my triggers. This stopped me from sitting unconsciously with my tongue hanging out my mouth in public. The funny thing as a child I didn’t find sucking my tongue a problem everyone else did. My mother and teacher suggest to the speech therapist that I needed to stop sucking my tongue. I enjoyed it. It relaxes me. I had no problem with being considered different. Being a child I did not know the repercussions of my action and didn’t care. I reluctantly stopped sucking my tongue in public. I was able to control it. I still did it when I was alone, at home and when I went to sleep. I guess it’s one of my guiltily pleasures . Its not the worse addiction to have, at least its not drugs. but in this vain world we live in today. I guess ppl rather have an addiction that is not so visible. Despite what anyone think of me, I am still beautiful. My teeth may not touch all the way in front but that is no one else’s problem but my own.Thank you for reading.

i am 13 and i think its a bad idea to keep a child from sucking there tongue or an adult because when i suck my tongue it release stress and i get really relaxed and i have another friend that does this to and she also says the same thing. i do get teased for it but it doesn’t bother me anymore because i don’t need people like that and because i suck my tongue i sleep alot better than my twin sister that doesn’t do this.

My two children suck their tongues in their sleep or when relaxed or daydream. But it’s so bad that you will practically be awakened if you sleep with either of them on the same bed because they produce different sounds in deep sleep while tongue sucking. Am afraid it may affect their relationship with the opposite partners, is there any cure or treatment for tongue sucking.

I noticed that when i did try to break the habit i had headaches and high temperature. My mom used to flick her fingers at me too but when i didn’t stop on one occasion she used matches when i was asleep. I had to carry something close to a blister on my lip. When my friends asked me i didn’t know how to answer. Like how easy is it for you to say you got burned cos u suck ur tongue?
