Q. What can i advise a friend to use as a __pain relief for a gum abcess other than the dentist as he will not go to the dentist. can some antibiotics be bought over the counter.Thank You

It may be the only time that your friend would consider going to a dentist , there are no recommended self administered remedies that you would expect long term results with. NHS direct can give advice on appropriate analgesics but I would search for facilities for dental phobics. IV sedation is an example of one of the possible routes to solving the problem
