The Bracket On My Brace Has Come Away Should I Be Really Worried?

Q.
I have just had a metal brace fitted & less than 2 hours after fitting, I felt a small twang & on looking noticed that the bracket fixed to the one tooth that I have a porcelain veneer on (top tooth next to the main front tooth) but, had come away.

At the initial consultation, the orthodontist did say that he wasn’t sure whether the bracket would stick to the veneer or that the veneer might be damaged. I told him that the veneer was in fact 15 years old & I wouldn’t be too upset if I had to have it replaced. My orthodontist is closed on a Tuesday (tomorrow) & I don’t want to worry about this – can you advise?

Hello thanks for asking. It’s always good to be consciouis of things like this. Basically though I can say that it’s nothing to worry about at the moment. However having said that, at some point a new bracket will be needed. Its usually best to replace the veneer with a composite veneer as this will bond to the bracket. A new veneer can be fitted at the end of treatment

Thanks for the reply. I was able to see my othodontist & he has removed the bracket as at this stage in my treatment it is not critical to the process. I have a further query now having received new information from the dentist who fitted the veneer back in 1998.

To recap I originally had the veneer (porcelain) fitted as this (lateral incisor) tooth was set further back than the central incisor. The veneer fitted then just brought this tooth “flush” with the central incisor to improve the overall appearance (in hindsight, I should have got a brace then maybe – but back then cosmetic dentistry was not that widely marketed)

I have been advised by the dentist who fitted this (fortunately he still had my record) that the tooth was perfectly in standing & he carried out no preparation to fit the veneer. He just took an impression, had the veneer made & it was stuck on.

So, can I just have the veneer removed? It would seem that there is no need for it now that I have decided to have my teeth straightened/aligned & am now undergoing wearing a brace to correct them? Will the tooth underneath the veneer be ok?

I realise that it may be difficult for you to comment without seeing my teeth, but I am hoping that as my original tooth was not modified in any way to fit the veneer, it can just be removed?

Thanks again – it is much appreciated
