The gum shield used for my whitening became dull is it okay to use it again?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Q. hello i wounder if you could give me some advice about teeth whitening, i had my teeth whitened in thailand with zoom whitening and was giving opalescence 20% to use in gum shield which were made specialy for me during the night from time to time when they become dull (not as white as usual) Is it okay for me to do this and will it damage my teeth? thank you

A. No it should be fine, I would check however to see if the product you are using is genuine. Take it in to your local dentist next time you go just to check its fine. If it is you can use it no problem and top up the colour when it starts to fade back a little. Whitening is safe -If you have your annual checkups and your dentist gives you the all clear.

A.

I would first have a hygienist visit and speak to your dentist about teeth whitening and let him know that the filling he placed on your tooth is not a great colour and you are not ahppy with the over shape and he should correct that for you.

Is it safe to have laser treatment to whiten my teeth after one has had radiotherapy

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr Moore I am enquiring if it is safe to have the cosmetic laser treatment to whiten my teeth after one has had radiotherapy on their face. This radiotharepay was due to oral cancer 7 years ago where I hade entry zones to the front and right side of my face. I also have reduced siliva flow but it is easily manageable with a good cleaning program. I am getting married soon and would like to try some sort of whitening for my teeth as at the moment I get a clean bill of health everytime I visit my dentist and he advises me to contact a specialist. Regards

A. I don’t think the whitening would cause any problems with your general health but it might be still worth asking the Oral Cancer Specialist just in case.

Would laser teeth whitening work on the yellow marks on my front tooth

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Q. Hi, My front left tooth has a yellow/browny mark at the bottom – my dentist said it is a scar that could have happened when i knocked my teeth even if i was only a toddler at the time? I am vey conscious of it and would like to get rid of it – Would laser teeth whitening work on it? also on my front right tooth i have white marks would they still stand out with lasering? thanks :-)

A. Sometimes these marks can be more obvious after whitening, for this reason I would use the more gentle home whitening system therefore you can monitor any changes as they happen

Can existing crowns be made lighter whiter?

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Q. Can existing crowns be made lighter /whiter?

A. I’m afraid not. This is a question that is asked alot- especially when people are considering whitening their existing natural teeth. If you have porcelain veneer or crowns in your smile line, these will not lighten and may look odd with your brighter smile.

My teeth are horrible yellowish in color what can be done?

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Q. Hi my teeth are a horrible yellowish colour my top 6 are capped what can i have done with them i hate them .

A. There are definately options for you. If you hate the colour of your teeth, then it may be possible for you to have them whitened- depending on your suitablility. Please be aware though that your crowns will not lighten- so you may need to look at getting these replaced to match your new whiter colour. I would advise that you see your local cosmetic dentist to see what options are available.

what are easy at home whitening methods? will they whiten you teeth at 13?

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Q. Hi , i’m wondering about at home whitening. Is the hollywood sexy smile a good buy? what are easy at home whitening methods? will they whiten your teeth at 13?

A. We don’t generally whiten the teeth at such a young age unless there are other factors to consider. Ask your dentist to assess the teeth to find out why their colour needs improving. You may just need a thorough clean and polish

I heard that whitening my teeth while having cavities is not good Why is that so?

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Q. Hello Dr. Andrew, I would like to whiten my teeth however i think i have some cavities. I heard that whitening my teeth while having cavities is not good.. Why is that so? I can try to whiten my teeth, however, I don’t think I can afford to treat my cavities because i do not have the dental insurance. Is it okay to try some teeth whitening products while having cavities? How would it affect my teeth? Thanks!

A. I personally wouldn’t whiten the teeth while you have decay in your teeth. I think you would be much better off spending the money on sorting out your dental health first

My teeth are yellow due to medication and i have crowding at the front can you advice

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Q. Hi there dr, I hope you can help. When I was young me and my brother were given medication that turned our teeth extremely yellow (I can’t remember the name off hand, liquid antibiotics I think). Further to this, my wisdom teeth have grown under my gums forwards instead of upwards, and I have crowding at the front as well as very short teeth. I have been unwell for a few years and am unable to work. What would you advise me, and also are there options for patients in my position financially. I am extremely self conscious about my smile and at thirty, i’d like to do something before I’m much older so I can have a few smiley photos! Thanks!

A. The antibiotic you mention is probably tetracycline.
If you are looking at the cheapest available treatments then I would visit your local NHS dentist to ascertain whether this type of treatment would be available on the NHS.

It can be difficult to receive funding for cosmetic improvement only

I was told i cant have my teeth whitened due to long course of antibiotics Is there any other way

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Q. I am considering having my teeth whitened, but was told a few years back that this would not work for me. As a child I was on a long course of antibiotics for a tonsil infection which was they were subsequently removed. I was long use of antibiotics can cause the teeth to yellow and teeth whitening unfortunately would not help this. They are not terribly yellow and I am not a smoker or heavy coffee or tea drinker, so wanted to know is this true, am I unlikely to see any result at all? thank you!

A. Teeth whitening is the least invasive way to try and change the colour of your teeth, as a result it is certainly worth a try but impossible to guarantee the results

I had a root canal done on my front teeth and now they are going dark grey colour pls advice

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Q. Hi – i have had root canal done on from front tooth after suffering a knock to my mouth. My tooth is now going a dark grey colour and is creeping down the tooth, i have always been really proud of my teeth and smile and this has now ruined it. I have an appointment with my dentist next week but am unsure of what to expect. thanks :)

A. It sounds like the root treatment is leaking, you need to have the tooth re root treated, then the tooth could be whitened and a white filling placed, or you could have a veneer placed over the tooth.

Will tooth whitening brighten the dead tooth and what are my options for my short front teeth

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Q. Hi there, I am currently in the process of bleaching my teeth with nite white acp, which I got from the dentist. When examining my teeth and after doing an xray, he told me that the nerve end has died in one of my front teeth – and it was just slightly more yellow. About 6 years ago I hit my two front teeth. The other tooth was chipped and my then dentist basically filed the chip out, so this tooth is slighty shorter with a slant. I am very conscious about this. The bleaching is working well, but the dead tooth is a brighter colour than the rest, but when lookin at it closer it still seems more yellow than the others, I am afriad to double up on bleaching of this incase it makes it any brighter. What are my options with the two front teeth. Many Thanks

A. You can bleach the darker tooth more by only putting gel on that tooth, long term you may want to place veneers on the front 2 teeth to make them identical.

Ive a obvious white patches on some of my front teeth what would you advise to fix it

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Q. I am 18 years old and I have quite obvious white patches on some of my teeth, particularly my front two upper teeth, that I have had ever since my adult set of teeth came through. I would like to know what options there are in solving this. I have previously spoken to my regular dentist, who dismissed the idea, saying that I had strong enamel and that the only option was veneers, which would not be advisable. Thank you in advance for your responce.

A. I have whitened teeth like this with good resilts. the trouble is that the white spots get whiter for the first 2 weeks of professinal tray whitening, they then fade away as the rest of the tooth whitens. Its definatley worth a try as normal veneers will entail drilling down some of the tooth, non prep veneers could also work but are much more expensive than tooth whitening. How soon after having my toot extraction can i have my teeth whitened?

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Q. I am having a top molar extracted tomorrow as I have an abcess in the roots. Because I have already had root canal treatment on this tooth my dentist is unable to save it. This means I will have lost a total of 4 molars on the top and will now need to look at having false teeth of some kind. Because of this I am looking at getting my teeth whitened before I get a soft flexi plate made. How soon after having my tooth extraction can I have my teeth whitened? Also the dental clinic I am looking at getting the whitening done, (I came across it on the internet and the prices are really cheap) doesn’t have any agencies/governing bodies named on their website ie; GDC or BACD. Does this mean they are dodgy and I should avoid them. They claim to whiten teeth with the new “Ultra-whitening” treatment in 15minutes and the treatment does not use any bleach. They just put a gel on your gums and use a laser. Does this sound right? As all the other websites I have looked at seem to use a bleach based treatment.

A. Only dentists are allowed to treat teth.  If this web site is a dentist and they ar using hydrogen peroxide no stronger than 6% you should be fine.  I would allow the extraction area about 4 weeks prior to bleaching – your other teeth and gums need to be healthy prior to bleaching

Can u explain why the tooth whitening process left me with extreme sensitivity and loose teeth

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Q. A year ago I underwent a teeth whitening process at my NHS dentist but almost immediately after the procedure I began to experience very severe pain – similar to toothache – in every tooth. This discomfort lasted for 48 hours before subsiding although I was left with extremely sensitive teeth. A few weeks later I noticed that several of my teeth – in fact five in all – were loose and I then began to experience problems with pain in these loose teeth and the surrounding gums. As a result I have had to have one of these teeth extracted and I suspect that the others will have to go too. Can you explain why the tooth whitening process should have had this devastating affect on my teeth and whethere there is anything that can be done to reverse the loosening of the teeth, cure the over-sensitivity and restore my gums back to health?

A. I’m not sure the whitening would ause loosening of the teeth although it might be resposible for the sensitivity. My guess is you have had unlying gum problems before the whitening and they have only just manifested themselves. i would seek advice from a periodontist (gum specialist) asap

I want my teeth to be as white as possible what products are the best for this?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Q. Hey, I want my teeth to be as white as possible, what products are the best for this? I want my teeth to be bright white, thanks.

A. The best natural way is by deep tooth whitening using products from your dentist such as enlighten.  However if you want incredibly white teeth you can have porcelain veneers made, however this involves cutting your natural teeth down, you can then choose how white you want your teeth.  Be aware when teeth are to white they look very cold and false.  I would advise whitening first.

i want to get my teeth whitened my dentist does it for £270 a reasonable price can you advice?

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Q. I really want to get my teeth whitened, my dentist does it for £270, which after looking around is quite a reasonable price but i am on Income Support and it would take me a long time to save up. Does the price drop at all for people on benefits? I am thinking it doesn’t as it’s cosmetic but am holding onto hope that i can get it done sooner rather than later haha, thank u

A. I’m sorry but you won’t get this treatment on the NHs, and it is  a very good price.
