Is teeth whitening provide long lasting result?

Should I go for whitening or veneer for the tooth which had root treatment?

Q. I had root treatment on one of my front teeth years ago and the tooth has gone grey, would whitening help or would a veneer be preferable, if so how much would one veneer cost? Thanks

A. Hi many thanks for your email, the gery tooth can be treated by internal whitening but this is sometimes unpredictable and even if the tooth whitens sometimes the colour can reverse.

the veneer is more predictable and long term, the cost of a single tooth veneer can range from £500 – £1200. dependant on where you go. my charge is usually £750.

Teeth whitening with few veneers causes mismatch in color

Q. Ive got an appointment to have my teeth whitened,via lazer and then the trays i have alot of veneres,im aware they cant be whitened wont my teeth look odd with some bright white and others yellow as i smoke what can be done about the yellow teeth ? thankyou fort your time

Thanks for your questions. As you are a smoker, the use of a stain removal system by your dentist or hygienist, may improve the appearance of your veneers. However, when my patients have had veneers in the past and now wish to have their teeth whitened, they have usually made the decision to replace the veneers to match the whitened shade of the teeth. You are correct in thinking that your natural teeth and the colour of your veneers may be quite different after the procedure. I hope this helps.

A. I think the tooth whitening system is Enlighten, it is the one I use.  Those fillings will need to be replaced after the whitening.

Hi, I have had lumineers for about 2 years,and I had bulimia for most of that time, I noticed recently that they are yellow, especially towards the gumline, I bought white strips, but it says it doesn’t work on veneers, What is the best way for me to whiten my teeth? is it possible to whiten them? please advise. Thank you.

A. If the underlying tooth is dark it is very difficult to whiten them. Whitening gels may damage your veneers the only option may be to replace them.

I ve teeth discoloration will zoom whitening work?

Q. I was born with a discolouration on my teeth (a slightly yellowy checkered effect up close) due to how I passed through the birth canal or something like that! Would zoom whitening work on my teeth or would this only emphasise the problem? Thanks

A. Hi many thanks for your email, with such intrinsic staining there are two outcomes with tooth whitening, the first is the problem will decrease and the staining will blend, the second outcome is that the whitening will emphisize the problem. the main concern is that until you try you wont know.

Q. Hey Dr. Solanki I have two big buck teeth that really bother me they are way big and have a gap in the middle but the rest of my teeth are pretty much straight just those two and my teeth also arent the whitest what would you recommend to fix my buck teeth and whiten my teeth?

Hi many thanks for your email, the two options to fix your buck teeth are braces or veneers, the braces are more conservative but the treatment may take longer, the veneers are a much quicker fix but hav the draw back of the teeth needing to be filed down and also the veneers will need replacing every 10-15 years. the whitening treatments i would recommend is zoom2 whitening or enlighten.

How long I need to wait to replace bonding after whitening?

Q. I have bonding, approx. 12 years old, on my two front teeth which are stained yellow. I am going to do an at-home whitening system. Do I need to wait 2 weeks after I’ve totally completed the whitening before I have the bonding replaced ? Thus, do I need to wait in order for my teeth to fully absorb & change color to the final “whiteness” in order to accurately match the bonding to the new white? Also, I’ve been told that I cannot do the ZOOM in office whitening because I have extremely sensitive teeth. Is this true as well?

A. Zoom is not advised for extremely sensitive teeth.
You should wait a week after finishing the whitneing before replacing the bonding to give them time to settle.

No dentist will give you a money back guarantee on tooth whitening as your teeth are the limiting factor, not the product. Everybody achieves different results, some people jump 10 shades, some only 2 It is impossible to tell you what result you will achieve pre treatment. /you just have to try it. Tooth whitening is the least invasive way to achieve a whiter smile.

If you have exhausted these avenues with little success, I would possibly look for a practice which offers free initial consultations, as this would allow you to meet the dentist and get a feel for the practice you are attending. I would also recommend looking at feedback on the internet, possibly reading patient testimonials on the relevant websites. Is there any whitening procedure that I could have that would be effective?

Q. Hi Dr. Glaister A question about teeth whitening – I was given tetracycline as a child when my permanent dentition was developing, and my teeth are now rather stained. Given that the staining appears to be within the tooth – rather than upon the surface of the enamel – is there any whitening procedure that I could have that would be effective? Many thanks

My front tooth seems to be chipped even though I hadnt hit it on anything why?

Q. I just started whitening my teeth with 44% carbamide peroxide gel I bought online. I’ve used it 4 times total… once a day for 5 minutes for the last 4 days. After the second use, I noticed my front tooth seemed to be chipped even though I hadn’t hit it on anything. Two more uses later, and the chip seems to be getting bigger. Everything I’ve read online says carbamide peroxide whiteners are safe and the worst side effect is tooth sensitivity, which I haven’t experienced. What is going on with my tooth?! Is it from the whitener??

A. I’m not sure whats happening here but I would advise you to go to your dentist to get it checked out in case it is something to do with the gel

A. If they are very small they can often be left. if the teeth whiten considerably and the fillings show, you may need to have them replaced.
