I am a mature student and my teeth make me feel depressed – can I still get treatment on the NHS?

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have just turned 19 years old and I’v been very self conscious of my teeth for years and even been bullied when I was younger, which led to moving schools, but the bullying still continued which affected my attendence and the choice of going straight to college when I was 16. I have now been in college since September and have recently had some harsh comments made about my teeth by a class member which has really knocked my self-confidence down even more but I really don’t want it to ruin my education this time. When I was 13/14 I was refered to an orthadontist by my dentist where they took an X-Ray and a mould of my teeth and told me I needed an operation to remove a canine tooth which never came through as it is stuck up in the roof of my mouth before I could have braces as there is a chance it could come through later in life, also my mouth is overcrowded and needed a couple of teeth removed at the same time. I could of had the chance to have all this done privatley as I was under 16 and my problem was pretty serious, but I was young and at the time had a strong fear of needles and seriously regret not having it done. As my problem is quite serious, I was wondering if I could have this done on the NHS as I cannot afford to pay thousands to go private as I am only a student, and live at home with my mum who is currently recieving benefits. Also it is seriously effecting my self esteem levels and making me feel severly depressed in myself.
Many thanks.

What metals are used in crowns?

Friday, December 10th, 2010
Q.

I was advised to have my gold crown removed (dentist said x-ray showed ‘a problem’). I’ve had the new crown about a year. The You & Yours programme about aluminum bronzes worried me as my crown is bronze coloured. Wrote to my dentist asking what metals were in my crown. She replied: zinc, silver, gold, palladium, indium and iridium. Because of my residual concern I would be grateful if you would confirm that this alloy would result in a bronze colour, and that there is no risk of the metals leaching.

I am suffering from extensive bone loss, would it be best if I received dentures?

Saturday, December 4th, 2010
Q.

I am a 36 yr female. fixed income insurance covers 50% of dental. I went yesterday to have my teeth cleaned and they said I had to have extinsive bone loss. I have my e ray I can try to scan and e-mail you. I can not afford to have the periodontal deep cleanings done. I only have 26 teeth left . My question is would my long term cheapest method be doing ahead and getting dentures. I cannot afford the proper care to save the rest of my bone and teeth. Please some advice..

My friend in her 60′s was told that there was an infection in her bottom teeth but cancer was also mentioned, please advise.

Saturday, December 4th, 2010
Q.

Hi, my friend who is in her 60′s went to her dentist last Saturday to have her bottom front teeth crowned. The dentist drilled the roots out but stopped and told her that there should be blood but there was ‘nt any there. He then took an x ray and told her there where shows in her gum, cancer was mentioned and then was told it could be an infection. Treatment was not done and she has to return this Saturday for a further xray to see if it is all clear. Question…is my friend worrying for nothing???? please advice and I thank you for reading this.

I am experiencing throbbing pains in my bottom molar, why is this?

Saturday, December 4th, 2010
Q.

I had 3 fleeting throbbing pain in my bottom molar that lasted about 15 seconds. I happened twice yesterday and once today. I went to see my dentist who x-rayed and said he sees nothing. I’m going on vacation soon and do not want to think about it. What could be the problem? I’m 29 yrs. old and take good care of my teeth. Thanks!!!

My denture keeps falling out and I am in a lot of pain, please help!

Saturday, December 4th, 2010
Q.

Help! I have had Dental implants on my whole upper which I’ve rejected! I am now 40,000.00 later in with a Denture which I cant keep in my mouth due to lack of gum! I mean none! I have a wonderful Prosdiodontist that is doing all he can to keep this denture in my mouth! nothing holds it in. I still have 3 implants that my periodontist said he wants covered up! My question is I need serious gum grafting so the plate will hold to something. The gum loss was due to major infections after the implant surgery! You would have to see my mouth to believe it! Ive been to a plasitc surgeon that said that was not his bread and butter! Breast reconstruction, augmentations etc…..God what did these doctors become Doctors for! What ever happened to Dr. Wellby????? Please guide me. I will not get sinus lift as my Perio. wants me to, I’m done with the pain and suffering all I want is to be able to eat and keep this Denture that I never wanted to stay in my mouth! I live in Ct. the New haven area.. I look forward to you getting back to me.
Thank you.
