Q. my 8 year old son has broken his tooth under the gum as a result of a collision playing football. He has visited the dentist who suggested that we just leave it but the tooth is becoming a bit wobbly. What is your advice on this one?
A. If it is a baby tooth its best to let it fall out, if its a permanent tooth it needs looking at ASAP

Q. i want to remove all of my teeth. i dont want bs i just want it done. how much will such an operation cost me?
A. this might sound like BS but it all depends on the number of teeth that need removing and what is put in their place. I would budget from around £50 per tooth.

Q. About 2 weeks ago, I was hit with a football. I experienced pain and noticed my tooth was loose in every way. Quickly, I braced my tooth using floss and other tooth on opposite side. I have not, and today used front teeth for anything. After a few days,I experienced no pain and sensitivity was reduced. Hot and cold has no effect. Considering that I have very good teeth, 8 or 9 days later, I knew something wasn’t right. I went to my local emergency dental clinic. After the Dr. evaluated x-ray, he said I did the right thing (bracing). The “right part” of root on my lower incisor is cracked. He noticed no inflammation. He wants me to keep bracing and schedule appt. with my Dentist in 2-3 weeks. He said to look 4 color change and on that later appt. with my Dentist, they will run test… Can you please explain the test? Also, I know teeth are (avascular), what is it that I’m hoping for? I’m so upset and fear the worst. If needed, regardless price, I will have to get an implant asap. Please explain how my tooth may be saved? Thank you
A. It really depends on where the tooth has fractured if it looks like it needs to be replace an implant is the best procedure, make sure you find a good dentist who does a lot of implants.

Q. the top surface of my two middle bottom teeth are starting to wear away. What is the best solution for this from a cosmetic point of view, i go regularly to the dentist and he has never said anything about it, so I dont know if it is a problem I should be concerned about, it may be due to teeth grinding? Also the last time I went to the dentist and had a clean and he said it removed some of the enamel at the bottom inside of my middle lower teeth, this area has now never felt quite right since this, leaving a rough feeling – is there anything I can get done about this.
A. I don’t think he would have removed any of the enamel although the teeth can feel a bit differnet after a throrough scale. You have 2 options for the worn tooth, you might be able to stop the wear by wearing a bite guard at night or you may need to restore the teeth with crowns or veneers

Q. i am 24yrs old and my upper teeth are all falling out one by one what should i do every dentist i see tell me to get implants but they cost to much.how about dentures will they look natural i am ashame i dont even smile any more can you please help me…..
A. It must be awful for you to be experiencing this….but be aware that there ARE options regarding your teeth. You need not suffer.
As you are still only young and hopefully have many years ahead of you…….the best long term option would be implants- as you have been told in the past. They are the next best thing to your real teeth- and are fixed into your mouth. You are right, however that it is a costly form of treatment. Please do not dismiss the idea straight away. Alot of dental practices offer financial solutions- such as 0% finance. It is not something to go into lightly, but I do advise that you have a consultation regarding your teeth. I would be more than happy to see you myself, or alternatively, I could recommend some good dentists in your area.
On the subject of dentures, there is an art to making them look natural. There are some great denture lab technicians that can construct works of art,- and it IS an option.
In the meantime, I would stress that you have regular dental visits and hygiene visits to stabilise the condition of your remaining teeth.

Q. up until about ten years ago my teeth werent too bad considering i hadnt been to a dentist for many years ..however since then, they have all really deteriorated to the extent where every tooth is either broken or in the majority of them literally worn away down to the gums ..there really wouldnt be one tooth worth saving …it has now got to the point where i have to be really careful when eating because the pain at times can be unbearable .i cant even get seen by a dentist near where i live and i really am at my wits end as to what to do ..i cant smile because im so conscious about my rotting teeth …basically i would like to know if there is anywhere that i can go and get them all taken out and replaced ..obviously i would want to be put to sleep in order for this to happen …i dont earn a great deal, but would be able to get hold of whatever it costs to be done .ive neglected them for far too long and it really is causing me pain and discomfort now ..im a 42 year old male …any advice or help you can give me would be fantastic ..thankyou so very much ..yours sincerely
A. I guess you’ll need to ask around friends to find a dentist close to you who has experience in complex treatment of this nature. Alternatively use the BDA find a dentist web site.

Q. My teeth’s are with dark yellow sports and it is difficult to clean them?
A. You need to go to a dentist and have your teeth assessed sometimes professional cleaning can help. If not tooth whitening may help but if really depends on the type of discolouration you have.

Q. hi, I’m a 28 year old woman. I have noticed through the years that the enamel has worn away on my two front top teeth and I have a little chip on one of them. No one else in my family has the problem. I do like a fizzy drink and did drink alcho pops a lot when younger… What do you recommend I have done? My dentist said that I could have white fillings on the front of my teeth to protect them and for cheapness or I could have veneers? Obviously they are expensive. How much would it be roughly? I am concerned as they don’t look too nice and would like to get it sorted soon. Thanks
A. Both your dentists options seem OK. White fillings are lower cost initially but tend to loose their surface gloss after a while which leads to staining the lifespan depends on your tea, coffee, red wine, Smoking etc etc. Veneers are less liable to stain and last longer. The fees range a lot between practices expect £350-800 for each veneer and fillings to cost about 1/3 of this

Q. Hello, I am 38 and my teeth (I assume because of night grinding) have been steadily wearing away. They are now all much smaller than they should be which really reflects in my smile. I no longer have incisors as they are the same height as the rest of my teeth. Is there anything dental surgery or wizardry that can help? Many thanks
A. There certainly is!!. This is quite common in this day and age due to more people keeping their teeth for longer. Very often the treatment involves increasing the length of the teeth in the upper /lower or both to rebuild the lost tooth height and to improve the function of the teeth. Once this is done it is usual to give a night guard to protect the new restorations from damaging night time grinding. Pleae ring my practice to make a free cosmetic consultation appointment and I will be able to discuss this further with you.

Q. I am 38 years old and am very unhappy with my teeth as they are very small and am very uncomfortable when i smile as my teeth are not very visable. The dentist that i attend says my teeth are waring away very rapidly and was wandering if anything can be done through dental surgery and how much it will cost. please help as this has been quite a worry for some time.
A.
You definately need to go and see a dentist that has training in occlusion. This is the study of how teeth fit together and why they wear. Obviously if your teeth aren’t treated the problem will get worse and the treatment will get more complicated.
If you live within commuting distance of my practice I would be happy to see you for a consultation, If you are in the north of England then you should go and see a dentist by the name of Ken Harris at Riveredge dental practice in Sunderland. It is very important that you have your treatmet carried out as soon as possible

Q. Hi I was considering getting Lumineers as I feel really that I lack confidence due to the current condition of my teeth. Looking on the internet, I couldn’t find any information on the cost of this or where I could get it done. I live in Edinburgh, Scotland. Is it really expensive? Because I am 18 years old and am going to University next year, I’m not sure I could afford really expensive treatment, but I really want something to change the way my teeth look, especially my bottom ones which are really ground down and mishaped and jaggy, they are all also quite discoloured and yellow-ish. Also in a unrelated question, I have had braces in the last year, which have since been taken off. The orthodontist applied a metal bar like thing on the back of my top teeth to keep them from separating , and said that I dont need to go back to him , and that the bar will come off itself. Is this true and how long does it take, as I think it is causing a metallic taste in my mouth. Thanks in advance for your help.
A. Veneers are possible but always at a cost. The metal permanent retainer is common practice and you may notice a metallic taste from it.

Q. Hi, I have a huge concern with my teeth. I have recently been confirmed as having enamel hypoplasia. Can you tell me anything about the etioliogy and pathology of this condition??? The destruction to my teeth is universal and quite serious. I am only 27 years old and this is a major problem for my self-esteem. I have seen a dentist specialising in oral diseases and aeasthetic surgical procedures and he sees my only option as having crowns put on all my 28 teeth (Yes! the damage is chronic!) I am just seeking a second (objective!) opinion based on this diagnosis and advice for treatment. Oh, and would the NHS provide this treatment? (Im assuming not). And another compounding issue is that I am a (struggling) student, financially independent from my parents. Speaking hypothetically, how much would this operation cost in the UK (with 3 root canal treatments also)?? Are the new ‘Procera-zirconium’ crowns the best on the market, and which crowns have the greatest resilience and longevity?? Thankyou.
A. Hi Enamel hypoplasia is a genetic condition that affects the strength of the enamel. This often leads to decay or excessive wear of the teeth. Occasional when it affects all the teeth the only thing you can do is crown multiple teeth.
with regards to treatment availability, I would guess some of the treatment is available on the NHS. Whether you could find an NHS dentsit willing to take this complex treatment on is another matter. Also the all porcelain or Zirconium crowns you mentioned are very expensive to make and will not be available on the NHS. These crowns are very hard wearing and if constructed properly will last for a very long time. As a guide they cost from £600 per tooth.
i hope this helps regards Andrew

Q. Hi Komal, I have really bad acid erosion and my teeth have worn down and started to chip away. Is it possible to receive NHS treatment at Guy’s Dental Hospital? My dentist has referred me to another Dental Hospital but it has been months and I have still not had a reply. Many Thanks in advance
A.
You could see if you could register with Guy’s hospital. I am not part of the faculty, I teach on a private post graduate dental programme there.
The best way to do it is to ask your dentist to refer you Guys as well and see what they can do
