My 3yr old has wobbly front tooth is it too early to lose her tooth?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr. Caplan, my daughter will be 3 in 2 weeks time and she already has a very wobbly front tooth. Is this something I should be worried about, surely she is too young to be losing her first teeth, and should I book a visit to the dentist for her. We do take care of her teeth and they are brushed twice a day so am quite concerned. Many thanks.

A. Please do not be concerned.  Provided she has not hit her mouth the relatively early loss of a tooth is unusual but that is all- the adult tooth underneath is pushing the tooth out. If you are concerned please visit your dentist

My front teeth one is broken and one is wobbly and what can be done to fix the wobbly tooth?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Q. hi there dr.andrew moore. i fell over last night my 2 front teeth one is broken and one is wobbly. and other one next to the wobbly one is also broken with nerve showing. my front tooth that is broken got filling done to it and my other broken one with the nerve showing is gonna get a root canal. i just want to ask what is the best way to treat my wobbly one? due to my dr said to leave it and see what will happen to it. i would like to hear other advice. thanks

A. If it is very loose it should be held firm by sticking it temporarily to the adjacent teeth. If it is only slightly loose then it would be best to leave it.

I am 24yrs old my upper tooth are falling and I feel ashamed would dentures look natural?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Q. i am 24yrs old and my upper teeth are all falling out one by one what should i do every dentist i see tell me to get implants but they cost to much.how about dentures will they look natural i am ashame i dont even smile any more can you please help me…..

A. It must be awful for you to be experiencing this….but be aware that there ARE options regarding your teeth. You need not suffer.
As you are still only young and hopefully have many years ahead of you…….the best long term option would be implants- as you have been told in the past. They are the next best thing to your real teeth- and are fixed into your mouth. You are right, however that it is a costly form of treatment. Please do not dismiss the idea straight away. Alot of dental practices offer financial solutions- such as 0% finance. It is not something to go into lightly, but I do advise that you have a consultation regarding your teeth. I would be more than happy to see you myself, or alternatively, I could recommend some good dentists in your area.

On the subject of dentures, there is an art to making them look natural. There are some great denture lab technicians that can construct works of art,- and it IS an option.

In the meantime, I would stress that you have regular dental visits and hygiene visits to stabilise the condition of your remaining teeth.

Tooth moved to its previous position after removing braces suggest dos and donts

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Q. Hello Dr, My top 4 teeth was little protruding, I had put braces for 6 months, actually all the teeths were crowded so doctor had made some gap in between so that my teeth will go in. It moved in but now it has come to the same position and it is shaking and paining. Please suggest what i have to do? If it comes back to the same position then it’s okay but if it protrudes more then it will be a problem. Please suggest what are the do’s and dont’s. Regards

A. Hi, it sounds as though you were not given an orthodontic retainer to wear. Your teeth are moving back to their origional position. You will need to have the orthodontic treatment again and then I cannot stress enough how much you need to wear a retainer to stop your teeth from moving again. This will just keep happening if you don’t, and could cost a substantial amount of money if you keep going back to square 1!
I suggest that you go to your dentist and have an orthodontic referral again. Good luck

My son will be 9 years old in couple of month’s time and still there is no sign of any upper permanent teeth

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Q. When my son was 2 years and 8 months old his 4 front teeth were pulled as his teeth were chipped and yellowish (may be because he was breast fed till he was over 2 years) and during that period he also had a fall from a swing and broke two his front teeth. After that he would complain about the pain. So we took him to the dentist ,took his X-ray and then the dentist advised us that if we leave his Milk teeth those might affect his permanent set and so we had to pull out his four milk teeth. His lower teeth were all good. Well, now my son will be 9 years old in couple of month’s time and still there is no sign of any upper permanent teeth. We had his X rays done and the dentist said that since he still haven’t lost any of his lower milk teeth we have to wait. Just a month ago his lower tooth is bit wobbly and just last week we noticed that another tooth has started to come out at the back of the wobbly tooth. So can you please advise what can be done for this? Will my son get his permanent teeth? Is there any replacement that can be done? Please suggest. Thankyou

A. It sounds like the permanent teeth have got trapped (impacted) you need to get your dentist to take x-rays of the teeth.  It is difficult for me to advise you without seeing your son but it sounds like the milk teeth need to be removed to try to allow the second teeth to come out.  The second teeth usually erupt between 4-8 years old so he is certainly developing a little slower.  If your dentist can not advise you I would suggest asking for a referral to an orthodontist.

Baby tooth will not come out. Had adult tooth removed

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Q. Dear Sir, I am 25 years old, and although my teeth are not in a particularly bad condition, I am getting increasingly worried about them. My top two middle teeth are showing signs on thinning (I can almost see through the bottom of them. Also I still have a baby tooth which has been wobbly for years, but does not seem to want to come out. As i have had the adult tooth removed (it was growing over the top), please could you advise on what the best course of action is, as I dont want to be left with a gap if it falls out. Thanks

A. hi, many thanks for your enquiry, i think it would be prudent to get a dentist to keep an eye on your front two teeth to see if the wear is progressively getting worse. the wobbly baby tooth may be betterto be extracted and then an dental implant can be placed into this position. this would be the best course of action for a single missing tooth. hope this helpful.

infection has not healed after root canal treatment and tooth has decoloured

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Q. I had an infection at one of my front tooth and i needed a root canal. My dentist did it but i still have some of the infection left as i can feel it. Because of the root canal my tooth discoloured slightly and i don’t like it.I would like to whiten it but i don’t know where to go for cosmetic dentistry. Also the tooth is moving slightly and i am scared not to lose it.i don’t know if it is moving because of the root canal or because of the infection.Do you think I should pay the money for the whitening or what treatment do I need?pls tell me will i lose my tooth because of the root canal or is it just weakened?thank you

A. Before you have the tooth whitened it needs to be reassessed as it does not sound like it has healed fully yet.  I would get your dentist to re examine it take some x-rays.  It may need re cleaning.  I would only embark on whitening once the tooth is pain free and solid.

my bottom teeh in the front all four are loose

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Q. i’m 45 yr. old female had dental problems since i was born couldn’t tolorate milk my mom said when i was born. so my teeth wasn’t healthy. my bottom teeh in the front all four are loose one of them in very loose than the other what sugestion you coudld give me. i need help i have no dental insurance.

A. You could have the teeth removed and a partial denture fitted. Once the tissues have stabilised you could consider your long-term options such as a bridge or dental implants. These are more costly options that you might need more time to consider whether they are right for you

I have had receding gums for years and now have loose

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Q. I have had receding gums for years and now have loose front bottom teeth, I am a very young looking 60 year old (get away with 45 ha) and don’t want to loose my teeth, I have been regularly to the hygienist but it seems the process has gone too far. Can I do anything about this

A. hi, it sounds as if they are loose you have lost alot of the bone around the teeth which gives the teeth support. my advice is seek the help of a cosmetic dentist which can discuss what options you do have if you lose the teeth. i hate to be the bearer of bad news but its better to be prepared. hope this is helpful.

A. Once teeth become too loose the only option often is to remove it.  It could be replaced with a dental implant , bridge or denture.

I have recessive gums, long wobbly teeth with gaps inbetween

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Q. I was diagnosed 2 years ago (2 years after the birth of my child) with receeding gums. I had the receeding gum at the lower front teeth cut away to stop more gum from pulling away from the teeth. I am now ‘long in the tooth’ My dental hygiene from diagnosis has been meticulous; I brush, floss, use interdental brushes and a tongue scraper and mouthwash. However, my gums are continuing to receed. There are small gaps forming betwe

en most teeth, especially the back molers. I also get a burning sensation in my mouth. I used to smoke on a social basis during my university days but I do not smoke now. My mother lost her teeth to pyrrhoea at the age of 29 after her first child and my sister lost a tooth to pyrroea during her first pregnancy. No roots are exposed as yet. My teeth do not wobble uncontrollably. However, when I eat and food gets trapped between the gaps, my teeth slightly move before I remove the debris with floss and they then settle down again. I have booked in with a specialist but I am worried. I am only 30 and I do not want dentures. My dentist said that I would eventually lose my teeth in my fifties, starting with the lower bottom teeth. I was shocked. What can be done about the gaps between the teeth and my long bottom front teeth? Can the recession be stopped? Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

A. You are taken the right course of action by seeing a specialist ( periodontist I presume).  If you have a genetic predisposition to this then now is the time to have treatment.  Hopefully the periodontist will be abel to control your disease – they have many different types of treatment .  Keep doing your best with your OHI.  You may also need to be checked for general medical problems – usually with a blood test .
