Still experiencing sensitivity after removal of wisdom tooth?

Monday, March 8th, 2010
Q. I had a surgery last week to remove my 2 wisdom teeths on left side. My dentist suggested to do another surgery to remove 2 wisdom teeth on right side next month. Before the surgery, I had ceramic fillings for 8 teeths and he polished later. From that day onwards, i could not eat any hot or cold foods or beverages. Feeling very sensitive. Am not much comfortable with it. Am using a tooth paste which is especially for sensitive teeths. My doctor informed me that, the sensitivity will go after the removal of wisdom teeth but still it continues. Please advice.,
A. Hi If you have concerns, i would express them to your dentist or seek a second opinion.

What can be done about teeth that are breaking apart?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010
Q. Dear Dr Justin Glaister, Well, I do not know where to start. Firstly I have to get rid of my wisdom teeth (the pain is killing me), and then I have a problem with basicly all my other teeth. My teeth will start breaking bit by bit, starting near the root, and it hurts badly, I have about 10 teeth that is broken. I could not eat for the past few days and whenever I drink hot or cold drinks it hurts. My dentist in south africa said that it is a shortage off calsium. I had this problem since I was 14 (now 22). I live in Swanage, Dorset, England, BH191AN. Is there any advise you can give me in this matter? Regards,
A. Firstly you will need to attend to your teeth before you start gettting chronic infections in your mouth. Then I suggest that you start using a high fluoride toothpaste – which can be bought from a dental surgery or cchemist. Justin Glaister

What can be done about one crooked tooth?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010
Q. I have a back tooth (the one that is next to my wisdom teeth that is crooked. I had the wisdom tooth(this was the tooth behind it) and the tooth in front of it removed because of decay so now that tooth has become crooked. Is there a way to straight that one tooth? I’m preparing to get a bridge placed there but that tooth must be straightened first. My dentist said that I could have it filed down or that I could go to the ortho and get braces. Would I need a full set of braces just for the one tooth?,
A. Usually a local solution to derotate your tooth is possible

Wisdom teeth ruined results of previous braces but what can be done?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
Q. Hi as a teenager, i had braces (train tracks) and after i was finished i was given a retainer to secure my teeth in the correct position. I wore them at night as i was asked for a few months to a year gradually wearing them less. My teeth were straight and i felt no need to wear the retainer no more. Im 20 and about a year ago my my top 2 wisdom teeth came through. as they came through i expireinced no problem. But since then i have noticed that my top teeth on one side have become crooked only slightly and my retainer didnt fit so i couldnt correct the problem. what im worried about is the fact that to this day i still feel them moving and my teeth are now becoming way out of alignment and my bite has become a grinding bite. What do i do, i dnt really want to have braces again and am scared to ask the dentist becuase it will cost so much money which as a student i cant afford. Im just annoyed that it took along time to get my teeth straight and now with in a year they are crooked again. I was never warned of my wisdom teeth being a problem which is why i never took action or cantacted my orthodontist when they came through. Are there any other options that can correct the alignment like a slip on brace. one that is permenent of visiable,
A. I would recommend that you attend either an Orthodontist, or a cosmetic dental practice for a free intial consultation. This will enable you to find out which treatments would be suitable to straighten your teeth, and how long you should expect the treatment to take. There are treatments such as Invisalign which are virtually invisible and removable. There are also systems availble which can acheive results in as little as six weeks. On completion of any alignment treatment, there is the option of either a fixed or removable retainer. I wish you well with your treatment. Kindest Regards. Dr Kailesh Solanki

Is Invisalign reason for pain in jaw?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
Q. Hi, I got braces about 5 years ago and had them removed like 2 years ago. Before treatment i had to get 4 teeth removed, the 1st bicuspids. I guess my mouth is too small for my teeth. Since i had my braces removed my top front teeth have been shifting and my bite has changed as well. What I hate the most is the front teeth because they’re moving back to how they were before, like a V shape sicking out. (I used to suck my thumb as a child) So i decided to see another orthodontist since mine couldn’t really help me and just told me to press on my front teeth while watching t.v.! I just started treatment with the new orthodontist and he recommended invisalign for my top teeth and put in one of those glued on retainers on my bottom front teeth so they wont shift anymore. ( they’re pretty straight) I’ve only been wearing the invisalign tray for 3 days now but i notice my jaw is in pain on the right side. Is it because of the invisalign??? I don’t want the discomfort to get worse. Also, i dont know if this is an issue, when i had my impressions done for the invisalign, he also shaved between a couple of teeth in the front so that there would be more room for my teeth to move. So during the few weeks that I had to wait until i started my treatment, I felt my teeth and bite shift slightly since he shaved them and made room. So now when i’m wearing the invisalign its changing my top teeth to fit what it WAS a few weeks ago, And the bite on my bottom teeth are different since they started to shift. Is this an issue??? I hate that i’ve had to go to another orthodontist and pay alot more money for more treatment ( 6 months ). I also apparently have 5 wisdom teeth that have not been removed. This new orthodontist did not say anything about removing them. Would my wisdom teeth be causing my teeth to shift more? should i get them removed ASAP? or will i end up having to get even MORE treatment in the future once they’re out? I’m sorry for the long e-mail, i just need some advice. THANK YOU,
A. Orthodontics is a treatment for not just correcting your teeth to be straight- but it also corrects the way you bite together- into a more ideal position. I’m almost sure that the invisalign is doing what it needs to do for your case. Obviously, moving teeth creates minor discomfort that can usually be relieved with standard pain relief such as paracetamol. The filing in between the teeth is common in orthodontics. It is called interproximal reduction (IPR) it takes a very minimal amount of enamel away from the teeth to overall create enough spce. This avoids having to remove teeth unneccesarily. Invisalign is a very good orthodonic option. It may however take a little longer than your usual conventional brace treatment.I stress though, that you need to wear some form of retenion after your treatment has finished to prevent the rebound movement of teeth. This can be fixed- like you are going to have in your lower teeth- or it can also be in the form of a removable retainer.I hope l goes well.It is important to maintain a good relationship with your dentist so that you can feel that you can stress any concerns at any given time.Hope all goes well.

I had fixed braces from age 13-16 and have since worn

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010
Q. Hello there, I had fixed braces from age 13-16 and have since worn a retainer one night per week. I am now 20 and upon noticing 2 of my front teeth were becoming slightly crooked in a short period of time i visited my dentist to ask what it could be. After taking a xray she showed me that my wisdom teeth are coming through and are applying pressure to my other teeth causing them to move. She suggested i increase the wear of my retainer to every night, however i believe my teeth are still moving.Would it be possible to undergo removal although the wisdom teeth are causing me no other problems as i am financially unable to have orthadontist treatment for a second time as i am a student. I am aware of all possible side affects etc. I’d be very grateful for any advice.

A. Hello without examining your teeth it is difficult to say however, removing wisdom teeth is a common procedure but you would need the opinion of a dentist / orthodontist, after an examination before making the decision to move ahead with this. I would recommend that you wear your retainer to stop your teeth moving back too.

Does wisdom teeth effect teeth crowding?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have had problems with my bottom right wisdom tooth since around June 2008, I went to my dentist and she said that they were just starting to come through and took x-rays which were “fine”. However in January 2009 I went back to her as they were causing me discomfort but were being relieved by pain killers, she took my over bite measurement and told me that they didn’t like to remove wisdom teeth and that I had to just wait for them to come through. After experiencing discomfort for a few months I just took the dentists advice and have been waiting for them to come through. However in May 2009 I suffered the most excruciating pain and had to go to the emergency dentist who informed me that I had an infection and that there was no room for the tooth to come through, he prescribed me amoxicillin and told me to see my dentist about getting it removed. On the same day I had to go to accident and emergency as the pain was still excruciating and they gave me Codine Phospahte and stronger strength paracetemol. I went back to my own dentist a week later and she told me that it needed to come out and prescribed me Metronidazole, took x-rays which are being sent to a surgeon. My problem is that with the bottom right wisdom tooth coming through it has moved my bottom front teeth out of place and x-rays indicate that I have another wisdom tooth ready to come through on the other side, would it be necessary for them both to be removed? And would I be eligible to have the NHS pay for braces to be fitted as from the x-rays the dentist surely must have seen that there would not be enough room for the wisdom teeth to come through? Thank you for any help and advice you may be able to give.

Should wisdom teeth be removed?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009
Q. Doctor, my 26 year old daughter has a couple of wisdom teeth growing out crooked, but there is no problem yet, except slight soreness every few months. My questions are: 1) Would you advise these to be removed at the earliest, or to wait and see if they actually give more trouble? 2) Should all wisdom teeth be removed in any case, whether they give much trouble or not? Thank you for your help.

A. Hi

The current guidelines sugggest that they should only be removed if there are repeated episodes of infection.

I would advise to see a dentist every 6 months for regular check ups. This will also enable the dentist to keep an eye on the situation.

Can the process of tooth extraction be quicker?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009
Q. I went to my dentist (NHS)for the second time re. my wisdom tooth. I was given antibiotics and she drained some of the infection. I asked to be referred to a specialist for extracion. This takes up to 6 months. I hate taking antibiotics and would rather have the tooth out asap. Can this process happen quicker i.e through private practice? What is the wait for an operation when going private and where could i go? I don’t understand why she seems reluctant to refer me and get it treated properly. I live in London. Best Wishes

My daughter may need alveoplasty is its necessary?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Q. My daughter is having two wisdom teeth pulled and they have told her she may need alveoplasty and it is not covered by insurance. She will never put dentures where the wisdom teeth were so why would it be neccessary?

A. Hi msny thanks for your email, this procedure may be required as if the extractions are very surgical, the bone might be very irregular once the teeth have been taken out and the alveoplasty will help to contour the bone so it feels much more smooth and natural in the mouth. you can ask them not to do the procedure but if the surgeon then feels it will benefit your daughter long term its a choice only you can make.

Can my wisdom tooth make my bottom teeth crook?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009
Q. Hi there i have a question for you i have a impacted wisdom tooth its my lower right side my dentist told me i could take it out whenever i want and its not a big deal, well my question is can that wisdom tooth cause my second molar to start raising up and make a couple of my bottom teeth crooked? because that is happening but like i said he said it wasnt a big deal!? can you please help me? thanks

A. Hi

It is very unlikely for the wisdom tooth to cause the crowding, but an examination would be required.

If you are getting repeated infections or it is causing damge to you adjacent tooth then it may require removal. Your dentist would discuss all your options.

How long I hv to wait to replace crowns/veneers?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Q. I’ve recently had a wisdom tooth and molar next to it extracted. I am eager to proceed with treatment to replace a number of crowns/veneers and would like to know how long I should wait until I can have an impression done to get this work done. The extractions were difficult and I had to take two courses of penicillin but the site appears to be healing well? Thank you
