Q. Hi, I am getting a root canal on one of my front teeth (upper right incisor). I had some work done on this same tooth last yr by a different dentist, it was already slightly discoloured so he did something to it and made it nice and healthy looking again (I think it may have been a composite filling or something?) I have been advised by the dentist I am having the root canal from that this tooth will discolour after the root canal. Will this still be the case despite the composite filling? If so, would it be possible to have a veneer bonded to the tooth rather than a crown? If I did have a crown would it be more noticeable than a veneer? Thank you
A. hi many thanks for your email, once a tooth has been root canal treated one main risk is that the tooth can discolour, a veneer can help to improve the colour it just depends on how dark the tooth ends up. also with a veneer in the future if the tooth discolours more this can lead to the veneer looking darker!. A crown will help to block more of the discolured tooth and if done using a skilled dentist and technician the crown can look just as natural as a veneer.

Q. I had a veneer on one of my top front teeth as it was dead and discoloured. I wasn’t showed te colour or size of the veneer before it was fitted. as it turned out the colour isnt perfect but much better than it was, the problem i have is the size. i went back the day after it was fitted unhappy as the tooth was much wider than my other front tooth and was very noticable. My dentist shaved it down the one side sa
ying that is as much as he could do without damaging the veneer. It was better but the tooth still stands out as sticking out and slightly too wide.Is this normal for a veneer? i was under the impression the tooth is shaved down so that veneer fits into place without sticking out? many thanks

Thanks for your question, a veneer is usually used to make a tooth look natural and healthy again, as a result of this you would expect it not to be noticable against your other teeth. I would recommend that you return to your dentist to explain your concerns in detail (maybe writing them down beforehand may help). If you do not feel that you get a suitable response, it may be worth gaining a second opinion, to see if the veneer can be improved, or if maybe it may need to be remade. Q. When i smile, my teeths are barely visible, i would like to know if braces can get them out or something, so more of my teeth show when i smile or any other cosmatic procedure??
A. Thanks for your questions, I would suggest, that it may be worth considering veneers. These are thin layers of porcelain which are created to fit over the front surface of the tooth after a little preperation. These can be used to increase the size of your teeth, but I would suggest that you get the dentist to create a wax up of the possible end result. This would enable you to make an informed choice based on a realistic image of the end results. Q. I wonder if you can help. I have crowded top front teeth and went through a few years of wearing a fixed appliance as a teenager and although I didn’t think necessary it must have been. However I still have crooked teeth as they have moved over time. the teeth on either side of my front teeth protrude pushing the front 2 back slightly. I have spoken to my dentist but he says it doesn’t seem worth having further orthodontal work. He also advised that it would age my teeth significantly by undertaking further treatment. I would love to get them fixed and would appreciate any advice. I am reluctant to undertake lengthy treatment again.
A. hi many thanks for your email, the problem is that if orthodontic work is done then a retainer should be given to ensure the final result is not allowed to move back, if this does not occur then the teeth have a good chance of moving. the options are such redo the orthodontic treatment and then make sure you wear a retainer or secondly have the teeth positioned used crowns and veneers. hope this is helpful.

Q. Dear Dr. Caplan, My First question is :- I am thinking of haveing veneers but wonder whether the natural tooth will become damaged in a similar way that natural finger nails become damaged by having false nail fitted onto them ? My Second question is :- I notice that the vast majority of patience have veneers fitted to the upper set of teeth, can they be also fitted with equal result to the Lower set ?
A. Veneers usually require some tooth to be removed to allow them to fit properly within the smile. This obviously will mean that the tooth is not the same as it was before. However when veneers are fitted correcly they will last you many years. They can be fitted to lower teeth

Q. go slightDr. kailesh Solanki, I am going to have Porcelain Veneer’s, not Composite put on. I have several question: I am going to have 2 front veneers applied. At this time I have temporary Veneers. I would like to know why are my temporary 2 front teeth getting black by the gum line traveling inside of the veneers? It really looks like mildew (Grosse)! No there was no dry blood. I am very faithfully at rinsing with salt water daily. This is the 3rd time this has happened to me. (3rd time is a charm) from what I hear? Ha Ha!! The first time it happened my dentist repaired them. I ask her to redo them. She said the veneers look to good to redo? The 3rd time I demanded her to redo them. All this happened with 2 weeks. (2). Doctor are my permit veneers going to have the same shape and length of my temporary ones? I do not really like the shape of the teeth now but can live with them for couple of weeks. I really expect my veneers to be even from the gum line along with a perfect pair of shape teeth? (3rd). At this time I wear retainers. I can only wear my bottom ones not my top? Will my top teeth move? I grind my teeth at night. Is there such a thing as retainers attached with a mouth guard so I can not bite down on my teeth /Veneers? If there is can you please give me the name of the retainers /mouth guard along with the Web site to see some examples (Pictures) please? If all possible please respond at your earliest.. Thank You For Your Help.
A. hi, many thanks for your email, the first thing to say is that when temporaries are placed on your teeth they can go slightly black under the temporaries, its not mildew its actually a reaction of the temporary cement. secondly if your unhappy with your temporaries this should be discussed with your dentist as this is usually the size of shape which the technician will work to when making the porcelain veneers. the temporary veneers will be joined together this will act as a retainer for your upper teeth, once the permanant veneers have been placed my advice would be to have a thick retainer made for your upper jaw which will also act as a mouthguard to help protect your teeth if you do grind.

Q. Hello Dr Solanki, I have had a very hard emotional time over my bent teeth, I am finally approaching this issue to finally be able to smile normally! I have very bent teeth, I have all my teeth but they are slightly discoloured due to lack of brushing and I used to smoke for 7 years. I am very interested in having Veneers to make over my smile. As the most bent teeth are my two upper front, (they bend backwards about 90 degree’s out) are they too bent to have veneers? I looking for 8 veneers and fillings if needed. I am aware of the costs but am worried it will take a lot more than veneers to fix my nightmare teeth. I think it steams from my dentist at age 12 saying my teeth are placed like rubbish in a bin, random and not pleasent to look at. (yeah I know 
) Can you help me? Thank you
A. hi , firstly please do not worry, the first thing is to be seen for a consultation where a full assessment can be made and some realistic objectives decided. once this happens and you iike the sound of what can be then then the progression of the treatment should be second nature. i have done complexed cases and by the sound of your teeth i am sure there are thing which can be done to improve the aesthetics of the smile. hope this is helpful.

Q. I went to a local dentist and ask about my options for my two front teeth that are SLIGHTLY worn away on the bottom. he said he would do crowns. I said NO. BECAUSE I didn’t want so much of my teeth to be taken away. He said he would do veneers. I left the office devistated because he took my two front teeth down to miniature chicklets. He put on temps that are joined together in the center and are very tough.
I am sick over this.He is charging more for veneers than crowns. He has now choice to me but to do crowns. What can I do. I called the office and left a message to call me immediately on Monday. What is my recourse?
A. Ideally you should have discussed this before any treatment was done, sometimes cosmetic bonding can repair chipped teeth in a minimal way. If the teeth are now prepared veneers are the better option. Please talk to your dentist.

Q. HI, I have a gap in my two front teeth and want to close it. I have been to the dentist who advises invisalign or veeners. I didnt want the veeners I dont want to have my teeth enamel removed and invisalign is quite expensive and I am not sure whether I want to go through that. I then came accross lumineers and got very excited as I thought thats for me!!No invasive procedure great. What do you think to them do they look nice and are they safe.Are they really reversable.Or would you just go for direct bonding I have some already now that needs redoing could it just be touched up and not have to be drilled off.
A. Lumineers a brand name for veneers. They are marketed as non prep veneers but can often require some tooth shaping. Once they are bonded on they do need to be drilled off if they require replacement. If you have gaps betwen your teeth yo may requre “proper” veneers to prevent the 2 front teeth from looking too wide.

Q. hello…well i have an small overbite on the top row of my teeth, only effecting 6 of my top teeth. The rest of my teeth are straight. Do you roughly know much braces with cost me? Can i get veneers? or fixed braces?

Q. Hi, i had a brace when i was about 13 for 10 months and had to have some teeth removed to make space for them to straighten out, well i am now 20 and during the last couple of years i have started to grind my teeth, they have become sensitive and look awful my two front teeth are the worse one is shorther then the other and 3 of my bottom front teeth have been ground down aswell so all my back teeth are fine but when i bite my front teeth dont meet, what is the best way to sort this and least expensive? A. hi many thanks for your email, the best least expensive way to sort this out is rebuild the front teeth using white filling material and then invest in a nightguard so if you do grind your teeth at night it will be the nightguard which is ground away and not your teeth.

Q. Hello Dr Solanki I had a missing tooth at the back of my upper teeth, the front two had previously been veneered some 14 years ago and one tooth next to a front tooth was a crown. I wanted the crown replaced, a bridge to be fitted to fill the missing tooth and the rest of my uppert teeth, which were healthy, to be veneered. The dentist thought it best to replace the whole upper teeth with two seper bridges, one starting from the right front and one fron the left front, a total of 11 teeth. the bridge unit starting from the left is ok , feeling quite smooth, but the other unit feels rough.What is causing this and what would be the remedy, and also, is it wise to file down perfectly healthy teeth to take a bridge? A. hi, my answer to your question is i try to avoid filing down healthy teeth to accomodate a bridge, the bridge could be rough due to excess cement being left around it, or the porcelain might not have been glazed sufficiently to give it a smooth surface. if this is the case it can be polished in the mouth with a diamond paste. hope this information is helpful.

Q. hi, im thinking of getting the replacement veneers. i had them for 15 yrs now. i was wondering, is it a good thing for a dentist to whiten my teeth (ones that have veneers) before placing the new veneers. some dentist said that it’s a good idea because it would deminish the grayish effect after the veneer is placed. and wont make my teeth very sensitive since it’s been grinded due to veneers?
A. Whitening is more for the teeth without veneers if you do like their colour get whitening then have the veneers replaced.

Q. Hey Dr. Solanki I have two big buck teeth that really bother me they are way big and have a gap in the middle but the rest of my teeth are pretty much straight just those two and my teeth also arent the whitest what would you recommend to fix my buck teeth and whiten my teeth?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the two options to fix your buck teeth are braces or veneers, the braces are more conservative but the treatment may take longer, the veneers are a much quicker fix but hav the draw back of the teeth needing to be filed down and also the veneers will need replacing every 10-15 years. the whitening treatments i would recommend is zoom2 whitening or enlighten.

Q. Hi, I was wondering if it’s possible to add veneers to existing crowns? I have a fairly extensive bridge on my upper front teeth but have always felt that they are too flat and small compared to what my natural teeth would look like. I would love to have them longer and a bit more prominent and hoped that adding veneers may just be the answer? Many thanks,
A. Hi
Thanks for your questions, it isn’t possible to add veneers to existing crowns. Veneers can only be placed directly onto your teeth. Once a tooth has been crowned, you would need to discuss replacing the crowns with your dentist, but I would recommend that you explain the reasons why you do not like the existing crowns. The dentist should be able to take an impression of your existing crowns and your bridgework and ask his laboratory to create a wax up of the results which would be possible with new crowns and a new bridge to acheive the look that you long for. Q. I have small teeth and a gummy smile which I feel quite self concious of. I don’t look good smiling in photos because of this. I’m a happy, smiley person so am enquiring what could be done. I have heard of gum surgery plus veneers, however there doesn’t seem to be any costs available. I’m thinking that if I got the front 4 teeth done this would look ok. What’s your view? And what (rough) costs are involved? Thanks

I am sorry to hear that your teeth are making you reluctant smile, as it sounds like you are a happy person. It is true that veneers can be used to improve the appearnace of your teeth, and hopefully this would encourage you to amile again. The costs for veneers will vary between practices, however you should expect to be paying from £450 – £650 per tooth. I would recommend that you arrange a consultation with a cosmetic dentist, so that you can get an idea of how much this can improve the appearance, hopefully you will be pleasantly suprised.

Q. Hello Dr.Caplan, At this time I have temporary veneers. My question is why is my temporary 2 front teeth getting black on my teeth where my gum line meet?
A. The gum sometimes bleeds around the neck of the teeth and this causes localised discolouration because the temporary veneers are only lightly tacked in place. This is eaily removed at the fit appointment with a mild bleaching agent. The final veneers should be fine
