Q. Dear Dr Moore I am Writing concerning a special case of cosmetic dentistry i am interested in. I am looking for a way of reshaping 8 of my teeth (the top and bottom canines and top and bottom lateral incisors). I wanted to consult you as to the feasibility of this, and secondly if it is a service you can provide as it is reshaping the teeth rather than trying to return them to a normal shape. The effect i am after is for the canines themselves to be slightly expended (approximately 1 or 2mm) and both them and the lateral incisors to be more pointed. The intent is to be a subtle effect and must be acceptable for still eating/chewing etc. I realize in itself this request is rather unusual, but i was hoping even if you yourself cannot provide this service you might be able to point me in the direction of those who could. On that note, if you can provide this service, how much would it cost? for all 8 teeth and which would be the best way of approaching this? I would greatly appreciate any help your expertise could lend to this matter.
A. The reshaping of teeth can be carried out in a number of ways including simple bonding of white filling to the teeth (cost £50) or veneers/crowns (starting from £450). The choice depends on the durability of the material needed, the extent of the correction required and the position of the opposing teeth.

Q. I have recently completed a course of cosmetic dental treatment which included a porcelain veneer on one of my front teeth. I don’t feel at all happy with it as it is rough to the touch and not the same colour as the other tooth. It appears almost stained!I am concerned to speak to my dentist as a complaint seems an insult to his work, however, the treatment was expensive and I am not happy with the result. Your advice would be appreciated as I don’t believe a pocelain veneer should be rough. Thank you for any help you are able to offer.

Thanks for getting touch, I would recommend that you do return to your dentist and explain your concerns. I would much prefer my patients to be happy with their treatment and be able to recommend my work. It may be that there is a little excess cement left from when the veneer was fitted. However in respect of the colour, the veneer should be enhancing your smile without standing out, and so the dentist may have to consider remaking the veneer in a shade which better matches your natural teeth shade. Q. Dr. andrew i am 18 yrs old and i lost my right front tooth at age 7 at a car accident.I need to implant a tooth , i visited a dentist once and he said that i would need to implant bone and gum. I wanted to know if you could tell me if he is right and if i am a good candidate for the one day implant if not how long will the WHOLE precedure last (weeks,monthes). thank you for your attention .
A. I can’t really tell you without a thorough assessment and x-ray whether you would be suitable for an immediately loaded implant or whther the bone needs rebuilding first. As a guess if the tooth was lost 11 years ago i would assume the bone needs rebuilding 1st then the implant placed at a later date. this type of treatment usually takes 6-9 months to complete

Q. Thank you for your very useful earlier advice. With regards to the ’six month smile’ braces – do they really only take six months or can they end up taking longer? How reliable are they long term, i.e. would my teeth move back afterwards? Many Thanks.
A. Thanks for your questions, the average treatment time for these braces is six months, although some cases can take a little longer. As with all orthodontic treatment, your teeth will naturally want to return to their pre brace position, and so it is necessary to wear a retainer on completion of the treatment. This can be a removable retainer to wear at night, or a fixed retainer, but your dentist will advise you of the best option for you. I hope this will help you.

Q. Hi, I visited an orthodontist in Cambridge who was very helpful. He said my teeth have an 8mm gap from top to bottom, they are also quite crowded at the top.So i would have to have 2 teeth extracted. The answer to straightening my teeth was take 2 teeth out one each side at the top (premolars)and then have a fixed brace for 18 months. I am quite happy with his answers to my questions.The cost was £2800 which i thought was reasonable. When i got home i looked into it more on the internet and found out about 6 month smiles. Would that be more suitable for me. The orthodonist i saw does’nt fit 6 month smiles.I guess he knows about the procedure and probably thought it wasn’t suitable for me, but would it be worth me making an appointment with yourself or someone nearer to my town to see if that treatment would be better.
A. Thanks for your questions, it sounds like you could be a candidate for the six month smiles treatment. However it would be impossible to say for certain without a consultation. I would recommend that you search for a certified six month smiles provider and visit them for a consultation. If you decide the treatment is not for you, you can still proceed with the Orthodontists recommendation, so will have lost nothing. I hope this helps.

Q. Hey Andrew, I was just wanting a little bit of advice please. I have a Cap on one of my front teeth, and a crown on the other. The Crown is now a different shade to my other teeth. They are all a little bit uneven. Would Veneers be the best opition? If so, how much could i expect to pay? Thanks in advance,
A. You could replace the crown and match it to the other teeth or change the other teeth with either tooth whitening or veneers to create a more even colur/shape to your smile. Veneers at my clinic start from £450, let me know if you’d like me to take a look

Q. I beleive I may need 1 or 2 implants to replace 2 vineers I already have. I would also like vineers on the other 6 front teeth to perfect this. I need some gum contouring on the right side as my gum shows to much when I smile. Could the gum contouring be done before or after the vineers/implants or would the contouring have to be done in conjunction with the vineers/implants? I am also considering going to Poland to save money rather than Harley st. Whats your professional opinion on this ?
A. The contouring is normally done at the same time as the veneers. You could also consider going to a dentist outside London rather than Harley Street that tends to be quite expensive rather than travel all the way to Poland

It should be possible to have your front teeth veneered or crowned to improve their appearance. However I would recommend that once you have had this procedure, you should wear a nightguard. This will help to protect the restorations, and prevent you from grinding them down.

Q. Hi, I have a quick question I hope you might be able to answer. One of my front teeth is slightly twisted and is particularly noticeable when you look at it from the side. It makes me self-conscious when I smile, although my other teeth are still in place and I would be happy to leave them where and how they are. I wore a fixed brace and then a removeable brace as a teenager and have recently had my top 2 wisdom teeth removed due to overcrowding (perhaps this may have caused the front tooth to twist?). I asked my dentist about possible treatments but he seemed reluctant to suggest anything as the tooth is healthy. I wouldn’t want to wear another fixed brace and ideally would want a quick, long term solution, preferably not too expensive. I was wondering what might be the best option? Thanks.

Thanks for your question, probably the quickest method to improve the appearnace and position of a tooth would be to place a veneer on the tooth. The dentist may be able to prepare the tooth, so that a veneer would sit in line with your other teeth, however depending on how much preperation is involved, it may require root treatment of the tooth as well. The other alternative would be a straightening system. I know that you are reluctant to wear fixed braces again, but you may be interested in the Inman aligner, which can acheive results in as little as six weeks, and is also one of the most cost effective straightening systems. Q. I had root canal on my bottom front tooth which was a grey colour, i since had my teeth bleached and was told to inject the tooth after the bleaching procedure using the trays and bleach provided. This didnt work and the tooth looks terrible compared to my other teeth which are white. What do you suggest? I just want a nice smile.
A. Thanks for your question, you may wish to consider having the tooth veneered. A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain which is made to fit over the front surface of the tooth, and can be used to improve the colour, shape, size and overall aesthetic appearance of a tooth or teeth. The veneer would be made to match the whitened shade of your other teeth, to give a uniform look to your smile. I hope this helps.

Q. Good day Dr. Solanki. I had dental braces for 2 years and 6 months and I am quite satisfied with the result except for one thing. One of my front top tooth is kinda “pear shape”. That tooth was protruding in before the braces and when it was aligned after the appliance, there was a wee gap at the top part of that tooth near my gum that can be seen everytime I would widely smile or grin which looks so unappealing. My orthodontist said it was because of the shape of my teeth. Is there a remedy for this? I hope there is, after all the costs and pains of wearing the braces. I hope its all worth it.
A. Thanks for your questions, you may wish to consider having the tooth veneered. A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain which is made to fit over the front surface of the tooth and can be used to alter the shape. However an alternative, less expensive, and more conservative option may be to consider using a composite material to desguise the shape. I hope this helps.

Q. my two front teeth sick way out what could be done to fix them other than braces

Q. I suffer from severe teeth grinding and i also have bad gum disease although i am only 34 and have never had a filling. i went away travelling and have not seen a dentist for over 5 years. i would like to know if i am treatable and what my options are for a smile makeover as my teeth are now yellowing, there is some movement and the gums are tender sometimes, I have started to become very self conscious and upset about it. Can veneers be fitted if someone has gum disease, what costs am i looking at or do you think i need false teeth?

Q. what is better veneers or crowns

veneers are better if there is alot of enamel left on the tooth and the teeth to be veneered are not already heavily filled.
crowns are more destuctive as more tooth tissue has to be prepared but are more protective when the teeth are more heavily filled or there is little enamel left on the tooth.

Q. I am interested in permanent fangs. I’ve heard of two options– one where you can have your teeth sanded down to a certain point, and have veneers placed over them, and they would be like that, permanent, for 15 or so years before they needed to be replaced. And then the more expensive sort– titanium rod implants where the actual bone is modified to give VERY permanent-no-changing-your-mind-later fangs. Is there any more infortmation on these? More specifically, I’d like to know about the former, because I am interested in having it done. Are these permanent to the point where they will not fall off even eating tough things such as steak? To sleep with the
m on, and have them until the 15 years or so is up? Can you give any more infortmation about these, and if you do them? For how much, if so, and every fifteen years, will I have to pay again? And in the event that I may want to switch over from these to the titanium rod fangs– could I? Thank you.

Im about to turn 40 and for once im my life would like to smile.My front three teeth are not straight,and seem to be going see through,one has had an rct and is now going grey , can you tell me what can be done and how much it can possible cost . im terrified of the dentist as well.
