Ive two stained front teeth is lumineers the answer for it?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
Q. Hi there, on my two front upper teeth i have a atain on each tooth that i cannot remove, i have tried everything. my dentist says it is caused through an illness i had when i was younger. can you tell me how lumineers work and if they are a permanent solution and is there a need for any injections? i have a terrible fear of the dentist.

A. Lumineers are not the answer – you will need the defects removed and have them filled which unfortunately will need an injection

I cant have braces as my roots are too small what are the alternatives?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
Q. Hello, I am interested in finding out how i can get teeth straightening done, when i was in high school i was told i cannot have braces as my roots are too small, i am 27 years old now and would really like to know what alternatives there are for me, i have been researching on dentist treatments abroad as they appear to be more cost effective, I also have a problem with my gums, they were different shapes and sized before, I have visited my local dentist about this and the gums have been controlled but the difference in their size remains. If i am honest i am not keen on veneers but perhaps other methods that do not take so long. I am planning on getting married mid 2010 and i hate my smile, i really want some advice on sorting out my gums and teeth sooner rather then later. I hope you can help. Thank you

A. If your roots are short then orthodontics are not advised .  Veneers and gum recontouring are a good option in these cases. In my practice this is a common procedure.  The gum recontouring should be done first and left to stabilise for between 6 weeks and 6 months.  Following this veneers would be placed to give you a stunning smile.

Why is that my crowns and veneers are not whiter anymore?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
Q. PORCELAIN TEETH CHANGING COLOR I had a full restoration in 2000-01 using empress crowns and veneers on the front lower teeth. The crown and veneer color were the second whitest you could get. I wanted the whitest but my dentist talked me out of it. My teeth looked fantastic for several years but now have turned off white. I was told that the porcelain would never change color…that is why I got the work done. My smile was very white for the first 5 years but has now changed to off-white..not very pretty. I have my teeth cleaned every 3 months and brush and floss 3 times a day. What is going on? I have pictures I can send. I am so upset because I wanted a really white smile and paid $30,000 to get one.

A. I would go back to your dentist to find out whats happening. I have found this myself with Empress veneers and have had to replace several veneers. It may also be the teeth underneath changing colour so get your dentist to check them out.

Can Veneers be done again if were not satisfied with the look?

Monday, December 21st, 2009
Q. Can vanneers be done again if were not satisfied with the look? whats the effect if its removed again?

A. Some tooth will be removed when veneers are redone but this can be kept to a minimum. Before you have them replaced make sure you have a very good idea of what you don not like and what you are trying to achieve

Ive a gap in the middle on my top set would veneers be an option advice

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have always been interested in having Veneers done, i hate my teeth, i have a gap in the middle on my top set and they are all different shapes and sizes, as money is really difficult for me im trying to find a non expensive way for me to archive what i have always wanted (Veneers) My life would be changed and i would be alot more confident person, i never smile, or have my photo taken because i feel my smile makes me ugly. I would appreciate of any kind of help :)

A. The cheapest way to have a cosmetic change is to have composite ( white filling) veneers.  This is done chairside and in my practice costs £425 per unit compared to £875 for porcelain veneers.  If this is of interest please contact my practice.

Worried to loose tooth due to my grinding habit can I have veneers?

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
Q. Hello I grind my teeth a lot in my sleep and sometimes during the day when I am nervous or stressed. My dentist gave me a hard retainer which did not work. He then gave me a softer one which I chewed through. I now sleep with the hard one in and the soft one on top of that, and it helps but not completely. I am now starting to chew through them both. I have a lot of headaches, mainly tension ones, and I often wake up with tension in my neck and shoulders. I have also started to notice that my teeth have become much more sensitive and I am worrying that I am slowly grinding my teeth away and exposing nerves! I was wondering if I do (fingers crossed I don’t), would I be able to get veneers? Also would i get them free or would I pay? And if I did would they be made of something strong enough to put up with my grinding? Thanks!

A. Veneers would not be a good idea as you will break them.  The hard splint is what I would recommend  - it will need adjustments as your jaw settles into its correct position.  Once this has happened the muscles should relax.

Awful tooth due to bulaemia would like some treatment.

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
Q. Hi ia was wondering if u can get anything done about ur lower teeth. i had bulemic an anerexia when i was younger and my teeth are very decayed and worn. i already have a venner on the top teeth. last christmas i tried to kill my self and now my teeth are making me feel bad about myself again.

A. The limiting factor may be the extent of the decay rather than the erosion caused by Bulaemia. Counselling in conjunction with dentistry would seem a sensible first approach.

Uneven shaped teeth needs to be analysed for the correct treatment.

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009
Q. Between the ages of 17 – 19 I had traditional braces. I am now 29 and find that my teeth have relapsed over time as my dentist warned they might. I wear a nightly retainer (which is a replacement if one I had and broke) but my teeth aren’t as they were when I first had my brace removed. The main issues are: a small ‘Madonnaesque’ gap between my front two teeth and the teeth wither side of those are rather short. I was wondering between veneers, invisalign and lumineers what I could consider to correct the problem. I want something that will completely close the gap without too much damage to my teeth which are white and in very good condition.

A. If the teeth are poorly shaped veneers will be the best option – lumineers are just a branded veneer. If the teeth are a nice shape then I wold recommend another brace ( may be invisalign or lingual braces) .  Once the teeth are in a good position then I would recommend a fixed retainer – V loop retainer allows you to floss your teeth and holds the teeth in their corredt position

A. If possible I would recommend a brace of some kind to get the teeth in a reasonable position – If they are ina reasonable position then veneers are a great way of giving you a beautiful smile

Explain me on different disciplines in Cosmetic Dentistry.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hiya, I am in year 10 and planning to be a cosmetic dentist, however, I am really confused! Are there different fields within cosmetic dentistry? I was under the impression that a cosmetic dentist is a specialist in just vaneers etc… That is what I want to specialise in. Please could you help me, i’m really confused about it all! Thank you very much for your time.

A. Cosmetic dentistry involves many disciplines including function of teeth / jaws, gum and tooth health, orthodontics and restorative dentistry.  It is not just about sticking veneers on teeth.  It is great that you are interested in dentistry but cosmetic dentistry is about making profound changes to someone’s teeth in relation to not just how they look but how healthy and how they function to make sure that they last a long time.  Work hard and join us in the wonderful world of cosmetic dentistry.

Would there be any problem in fixing refitted crown which is sticking out?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I hope you can help me, i have recently had acrown and a veneer fitted on my two front teeth, my crown came out after only a week. my dentist has put it back in with a stronger cement however has pushed it froward when putting it in. now it sticks out further than my other teeth. my dentist has said she can take it out but will have to numb it and there is the chance the root might crack or the crown. do you have any advise on what to do. Thanks

A. You will need to discuss this with your dentist as I cannot assess your situation without examining you- sorry

Confused as I cannot find a reason for my smelly and rotting teeth.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I had a veneer on my lateral incisor around 4 years ago. Last year I noticed that the tooth was discoloured around the gum line and had a bad smell/taste and feeling of pressure – never pain. After several courses of antibotics my Dentist performed root treatment, twice as it was unsuccessful the first time. My tooth still smells and tastes bad and my dentist is baffled – any ideas? I think perhaps there is a gap between the veneer and my tooth and that the front shell of my tooth is rotting, could that be the case – is there anything can be done? Thanks

A. You either have the abscess still present, gum disease or decay underneath your veneer.

Will dentinogenesis cause problem in having veneers?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. When i was very young i believe i was diagnosed with i think its called dentyne a gein or something similar, because my daughter was diagnosed with it as well.My problem is that i have small teeth and would like to have verneers but my dentist says it is not possible because of the pressure that would be put on them is this true and what can i do

A. I believe your condition is dentinogenesis Imperfecta – This is where the dentine fails to form properly and the enamel breaks away.  It is difficult to treat because the teeth are weaker and the dentine is difficult to bond to.You need to be properly assessed  and may be referred to a postgraduate dental hospital.

I have relatively large front teeth and considering cosmetic treatment.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I haven’t been visited te dentist for a while now, but haven’t expereinced anything major with my teeth. The only thing concerning me with my teeth are the way they look. My front two teeth are quite large, but the only look large as the next set of teeth are small. I’m 20 now but it feels as though my front 4 teeth going bent especially mt 2 ’small’ teeth. i feel so paranoid as i smile alot. I now find my smile to be more smaller and tighter. I’m not sure if braces is a good option although i would like straight teeth all over (my bottom teeth are not too straight either. I’m not keen on braces and i know the pricing to correct my teeth will not be cheap or even a ‘little affrordable’. I’ve haerd about Invisalign. I’m quite interested. However i’m also interested in something that will sort out the problem with my 2 ’small’ teeth, so that they are equal to the rest of my teeth. Is there something that i could have for the small set of teeth, that won’t damage my own teeth and will last me for a long time?

A. To change a shape of the tooth, veneers may be possible. Either composite or porcelain may be possible. I would recommend a consultation to allow the dentist to answer your specific questions.

I have decided on Invisible braces but would this work for my lifestyle?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi, I am contemplating invisible braces but I think I have a few problems and I am trying to figure out the best way of doing this. I will be leaving for the Caribbean for 6-12 month contract (in about 3 months time). If I get the invisible braces put on in this country what do I do about the follow up sessions with the dentist? I work as a Divemaster and I will be diving every day, will this affect my braces in any way? I have considered veneers but I do prefer the braces option.

A. Hello, it really depends how much movemnt that your teeth require some people can align thier teeth in 6-8 weeks some cases takes over a year it really depends on you. Also diving shouldnt really affect your orthodontic treatment
