Q. Hello Dr Moore, I am 42 years old. I had my mouth half full with crowns by 20 yrs old. By 34, many were needing to be replaced. I begged the dentist to give me an upper plate. I made a good case and I got it. He made me 4 or 5 before I got a good fit. I still have to use a large amount of Fixodent daily to keep it in. Now, at 42 I have had most of my bottom teeth extracted and Im down to 5 in the front. THere are no other teeth/replacements on the bottom at all. The plan is to remove the 5th tooth and I will be left with 4 in the front, and get a partial bottom plate. And make a new top plate to fix the new bite. How will the teeth in the back stay down? I will need to glue down with fixodent? Will it somehow hook on to my front teeth? People Ive known with this, had hooks onto back teeth which I do not have. Please let me know. At this point I just want to be able to chew again.
A. Anything put into the lower jaw will help you to chew although a denture is very difficult to wear if there are only a few teeth to anchor it in place. You might want to consider a denture held in place with dental implants this maybe your best solution in the lower jaw in the long term

Q. i have two large front teeth and absolutely detest them. its giving me really low self esteem and i would really like to do something about them. What are my options and honestly how much will this kind of treatment cost? My two front teeth are longer than my “wedding finger nail” (short) just to give you a rough idea. im getting increasingly depressed about it what can i do?
A. The cost depends on what you have done. If they need veneers this will normally cost from around £500 per tooth. If the teeth need removal then you could be looking at £500 for a small denture or £4000 for fixed implant supported crowns.

Q. Hi Dr Moore,I would like to ask you what I can do in my situation.I start a full mouths restauration last year,I already pay 10 .000 pounds .all the extraction been done,manage to have 6 implants on my upper jaw as well; still have four off mynteeths on upper jaw who need crowns,on my lower jaw just four teeths on the front.Now my circumstances change,I m on benefit I have a Hc2 certificate wich is not seems to help me much.I am stuck in the midle with a temporarty bridge wich is not even done properly because my dentist not pay any interes any more.My dentist even sugest to have the implants extracted and have ba denture instead wich I think is ridiculos.Anyway what I want to ask is if I have any chance to finish the work with a private dentist and pay the diference for the abutments for example.
A. I’m sure you would be able to find someone who will be happy to finish the work for you. It would be very useful for them to know the type and sizes of implants used so the correct components can be ordered. Unfortunatley none of this treatment is available on the NHS so your NC2 cert isn’t any use. Let me know if you’d like me to take a look Regards

Q. Good afternoon,I have just visited a dentist who says that I need root canal surgery,and prescribed antibiotics because of an abcess.I had an upper bridge 10 teeth fitted 5yrs ago, though not by him, and have been told that I am about to lose all of my teeth, plus the bridge. I am at my wits end. I will not contemplate dentures, and need advise on implants.Please help
A. Options for replacing mising teeth are
1. bridges
2. dentures
3. implants.
Implants are a great way of replacing missing teeth. My advice would be to see an experienced implant dentist to provide you options.

Q. I have one missing front tooth & currently a single tooth denture that I am not happy with. I have been told I can have a replacement tooth glued to the adjoining tooth instead. I am told this is a successful procedure although not often used. What do you think?
A. It might work in the short term but an implant might be a better long term solution

Q. Hi, i was wondering if a real tooth can be a replacement for a dental implant rather than titanium?
A. Thanks for your question, the titanium rod is placed into the jawbone but has a natural looking false tooth over the top of it. If you wish to avoid having the titanium rod placed, then you would need to have either a bridge (attached to either one of or both of the teeth either side of the gap) or a denture to fill the gap left by your missing tooth. I hope that this helps.

Q. I have 6 bottom front teeth and a top plate,could vou tell me if it is possible to grind down the bottom teeth and fix on a full denture, and how much would it cost?thankyou.
A. You could have something called an overdenture which sits over your existing teeth. The teeth can also be used to secure a new denture using precision attachments or clasps.

Q. I had a removable partial denture fitted 3 days ago. I can’t speak or eat with it and I’m sure the problem is because of the acrylic palate. Is it possible to have the palate removed? I have four teeth on the denture which are held in with two clasps and it is so hard to remove it. I haven’t put it in today, because its too difficult to get out again. Please advise. Many thanks
A. It sounds like it needs adjustment although the difficulty speaking is normal when a denture is first fitted. You might have to go back to your dentist next week for adjustments or consider an alternative such as a bridge or implants.

Q. Hi, I had a really bad diet throughout my youth years and now i’m in to my late 20’s it is catching up with me (I suffered a food disorder and now i have cured that over the last year and massively improved my diet i also suffered from regurgitation due to the poor diet and stomach acid coming back up has not helped the situation) I have lost 3 lower bottom teeth (on my left side) And have massive decay on the bottom 3 on the right (I think on my next visit i will have to have an extraction on one) What options do i have as i really need to rebuild the back teeth in my mouth or i fear further trouble in the future! Any help/advice will be of great benefit! Thank you for your time!
A. If you can save the teeth on the right you could try crowns. If not then you may need to consider either removable teeth- a denture, or fixed false teeth – dental implants.Implants are probably the best solution as fixed teeth tend to be easy to maintain and are generally more comfortable.

Q. In early March this year, finally my “baby tooth” cut through – in the roof of my mouth, just behind my eye/front tooth at a pointing outward angle. Nothing special really, except that I’m 43 years old. I needed dental surgery, as it was pushing my front tooth forward and making loose my 3 tooth bridge. I had the surgery at Guy’s Hosipital under the care of a lovely team. It was pretty drastic I must admitt, drilling through the front of my upper gum line to the left of eye tooth and incision/hole drilled in the roof of my mouth to extract said tooth. Nine months later however, I’m left with a widening gap of the eye/front tooth and my 3 tooth bridge is loose, and lower than my gum line. My whole gum line has changed above the bridge so that now you can actully see the metal structure of the bridge itself. The bridge used to fit snug and I never had a gap either at the top of this structure or as is now a gap between my front and eye tooth. I don’t think my upper jaw bone structure would support implants following my surgery. What would you suggest? At this point I am seriously considering a denture of some form, one that does not involve invasive surgery, but then what about the gap between front tooth and eye tooth?
A. Hi it sound like you’ve been through a lot so a denture would seem like an easy option. It might be a good short term option however I guess in the long run you would probably be more comfortable with fixed teeth. This could probably be acheived using an implant supported bridge although it sounds like the bone would need rebuilding firts. Perhaps you could go back to Guys and ask them for their opinion as they have very experienced surgeons who might be able to help you.

Q. I’m wanting to have dentures put in as missing four of my teeth and my teeth are also extremely sensitive would this be a good idea to get done? If am to get this done how long would it take and would it be painful to get done? I’m also 16 so would I be able to get this on the NHS or have to pay?
A. Thanks for your question, it is possible to have dentures on NHS. The process to make a denture would usually take between 4 – 8 weeks, depending on the type of denture and the laboratory which is used. This process should not be painful. I hope this helps.

A. Unfortunately implants are mainly provided on a private basis. Only in certain circumstances are they provided at nhs hospitals i.e cancer or trauma.

Q. Hi, I am a 49 year old male and i have lost all but 3 of my top teeth, and dont have that many left on the bottom, can you help me please?
A. The treatment for you will probably be a combination of dentures and implants. The best result would be a fixed bridge attached to implants but this depends on the amount of bone available for the implants and of course cost

Q. My top four front teeth have been on a denture for over 20 years. During that time my gums have receded quite a lot. Both teeth on either side of the four now look silly as the teeth themselves look very long as the gums have receded so much. I have quite a wide smile/laugh but over the years I have tried to limit this as I am very aware of how noticeable the ‘long’ teeth are. Have you any ideas??
A. You probably need a new denture with the teeth correctly placed and the correct amount of gum

Q. Dear Rob, I have lost about half of my teeth. I had a set of dentures made up a couple of years ago, but find them impossible to wear, they are extremely uncomfortable. To compound this problem, all of my front teeth were damaged in an accident a number of years ago, and i have a habit of grinding what remains of them. The are becoming quite ‘threadbare’ and sensitive. I am also not in a position to fund the extensive dental surgery I would require to prevent further damage. I believe there are certain criteria that the NHS would consider adequate medical justification for funding implants, and I was wondering if a patient such as myself would fall into this group. Q. thanks for taking the time to read this. basically i had an accident while playing football which has led to me losing over half of one of my front teeth and the other front tooth being pushed back out of place. also along with that my bottom teeth are quite covered in plaque and rotten due to many a years cola drinking without looking after my teeth and they have become quite rotted and were also slightly pushed back in the accident and feel quite sore. ive not had a dental visit for 12 yrs until i had emergency surgery the day after the accident and all the dentist did was pull my front tooth forward again and glue it to the tooth next to it aswell as to the snapped tooth which he appears to have just covered in glue aswell to stop me cutting my mouth open on. i really dont like the sound of having false teeth put in place as my front teeth top ot bottom but it seems i may lose most of them if this repair work wasnt successful and if my bottom front teeth cant be saved. what are my options as im a unemployed nhs dental user. thanks for yor time
A. Thanks for your questions, I’m sorry to hear about your recent trauma. If you are unfortunate and do have to lose some of your teeth, dentures may not be the only option available to you. It would depend on the stability of the healthy teeth either side of your gap, but you may be able to have a bridge. A bridge is made by putting crowns on the teeth at either side of the gap and then joining the two crowns together by attaching a false tooth in between them. However sometimes the dentist will advise that you have a temporary denture in place for a while after you lose the teeth to allow for the healing process. I hope this helps.

Q. Hi i have recently had all but my right eye tooth removed and an immediate lower denture placed. However the denture does not fit and despite several adjustments, it keeps aggrevating my mouth so it is not healing and no i am left with no lower denture, what can i do?
