Q. Hi Dr Solanki, I have a lateral incisor on the top row of my teeth that is twisted and ruins my smile. I feel really self conscious about it and also have one lateral incisro on the bottom row that is pushed back behind thew rest giving the appearance that it is shadowed (and therefore a little discoloured). I was wondering what might be a good treatmnet for me to have and how much it might be? Many thanks for your help and best regards
A. hi many thanks for your email, i think the best option would be to maybe consider a brace treatment called the six month smiles which moves the teeth in the smile arch mainly but within a very quick time frame. the cost of which varies from £2000 – £3000 for the full upper and lower treatment.

Q. my two top front teeth are chipped and i am concerned they will chip even more is it possible to repair them, will i have to go private and hoe much roughly will it cost, as i am having trouble finding an nhs dentist.
A. I recommend you call around to find an NHS dentist in your area taking on new patients or visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/
If you decided to go down the private route then after your examination your dentist can inform you on the costs involved in repairing this.

Q. my 8 year old son has broken his tooth under the gum as a result of a collision playing football. He has visited the dentist who suggested that we just leave it but the tooth is becoming a bit wobbly. What is your advice on this one?
A. If it is a baby tooth its best to let it fall out, if its a permanent tooth it needs looking at ASAP

Q. My question is about my lower teeth, 4 to 5 of them are overcrowded but also some are kind of chipped but do not have a hole in them. Is there a way to get them to line up in every way?
A. You could have the teeth straightened and then have the chipped teeth re built. You need to have a consultation to see what options are available.

Q. Hi i’ve had crooked teeth for a long time. When i was a teenager my parents couldn’t afford to get me braces, back then i didnt mind the way my teeth were i guess because i was so young i didnt care, but now i do not like smiling because my left front tooth sticks out ( i have an overjet) and its really unattractive. i am 21 years old now and i want to get them fixed but in a way scared because 3 years ago i went to an orthodontist and he told me i need 4 teeth extracted because i have severe crowding, over jet, and an over bite. i was actually hoping i would be a candidate for invislign but i wasnt. so here i am 3 years later and i want to get them fixed so bad. i just do not want to get teeth extracted. Now my question is when that orthodoctist said all that to me 3 years ago. Do you think i can be able to fix my teeth with out getting any teeth pulled out? and i just read about the 6 month smile, do you think i will be a candidate for that?.
A. Some orthodontists favour the approach of expanding the arch rather than extraction. You will need to ring around orthodontists in your area to find out what their views are.

Q. Hi Dr Caplan, I sent a question about 3 weeks ago and haven’t seen a reply yet so I’m not sure if you received e-mail – apologies if you have received it twice. I am 48 years old and I lost one of my front teeth when I was about 13 years old, I had a fall and the dentist removed the broken tooth and fitted a false one on a pallet which I hated. About 17 years ago I had a bridge fitted which now needs attention as it is starting to wear badly. However my problem is that I have protruding front teeth that I would dearly love to have straightened (they are not so bad and they are not crooked in any way – I think the problem was caused with m
e having a dummy as a child) Am I right in thinking I cannot have an invisible brace fitted when I have a bridge? If not, what do you think my best option would be where I could have an invisible brace fitted? Can I have the bridge removed and have an implant fitted and a brace fitted then? I do hope you can help me – despite my age, my confidence is rock bottom because of this problem and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time by making an appointment. Many thanks in advance. Many thanks
A. Apologies for the late reply. for the Your problem is definitely complicated by the presence of the bridge. I have treated cases like yours where I widen the smile using veneers further back to balance the appearance of the front teeth. The treatment usually involves about 10 teeth including a new bridge. This allows me to create a beautiful smile. Invisalign may be possible to use to help achieve this but usually this is not required. Hope this helps and if you would like a free cosmetic consultation please contact my surgery.

Q. Hello, On the left side of my two front teeth i ahve a twisted tooth. I don’t want to have braces and turned the oppurtunity down because i didn’t want the pain and hassle for one tooth. I’m asking is there any way to have this cosmetically done, i.e. veneers, crowns, false teeth, etc. Please let me know; i haven’t had a cosmetics professionals opinion. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Many Thanks.
A. Crooked teeth can be treated using orthodontics to move the teeth into the correct position, veneers/ crowns to disguise their actual position or a combination of ortho and veneers/crowns. If teeth are in a poor position some tooth will need to be trimmed away for the veneers/crowns to have the correct aesthetic result. Ortho will minimise this amount of tooth reduction necessary. Hope this helps.

Q. Hello Was wondering if you can kindly give me advice. I have a short upper lip which means my lips do not meet when I relax & consequently I always show my upper teeth. I have previously had Orthodontic & jaw surgery but my lips still do not meet. Is there a procedure where I can have my top lip lengthened? If so, can you provide me with details & where I have could have this done. Thanks for your help
A.
Dr Peter Fairbairn has a procedure to lower the upper lip. This is usually used to prevent excessive gum showing but it may be useful for your problem. Please contact him at www.scarsdaledental.co.uk to discuss your problem further. I hope Peter can help you.

Q. Hi Dr Caplan. I’ve just had my braces put in. Three days after having them put in when my teeth were stull tender, sore and not as stable, I fell and hit one of my front tooth on the ground, which resulted in some bleeding seeping out from that gum line. Now four months after, that tooth now clicks when I push it with my tongue, and feels ‘wobbly’ to a degree. It will become stiff again like before, or will I need a procedure to strengthen its stability? Thanks
A. You may have fractured the root of the tooth and unfortunately it may need to be removed. Please see you dentist for an Xray and vitatlity tests to assess this

Q. My teeth are in pretty good condition. I have no fillings and they are quite white. My only problem is my front tooth is twisted and so from the side, when i smile, my tooth looks pointed. I really want to get this corrected. Having researched a little into it i fear it may be really expensive. Would it be possible to only have 1 veneer, i dont want it to look odd against my other teeth, and how much would only 1 cost? Also how much would braces cost? as i dont think, in my case, it should take too long to correct. Thanks
A. I would personally advise orthodontic treatment to correct the twist of your tooth. There are several systems on the market that can correct the twist in a few months- maybe even less. You need to see an orthodontist about this.
Having a veneer is also an option to consider though. It is quicker- but not necessarily cheaper. You may also consider having the 2 fron tteeth veneered to create perfect symmetry. Expect to pay around £1500 for 2 teeth at a good quality cosmetic practice. The orthodontic appliance prices also vary. expect to pay around the same price.

Q. Dr Glaister, I am 43 and face the problem of twisting front upper teeth and over crowded lower teeth with one capped tooth. All teeth are in reasonable shape. I am unsure of the next step in getting my teeth straightened. Is the answer orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry.
A. The most conservative route would be orthodontics as Cosmetic treatment require tooth preparation and would also has a definative life span of approx 10-15 years. The Orthodontic treatment time is longer than Cosmeticly correcting your teeth usually being 1-2 years where as Cosmetic treatment can take as little as 4 weeks.
It is totally the patients choice to choose which option is the most suitable for them.
I recoomend you go for both an orthodontic consultation and a cosmetic consultation so that you are fully informed of all the options avaiable to you.
If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards

Q. Hey, I’m 21 years old and I definitely dont want any braces. But, I have this one tooth between my incisor and canine which is completely crooked. It looks like I have a gap in my top half set, and then when you look close enough there is a tooth sitting at a 45 degree angle between two other teeth. Do you think if I had my widsom tooth in the top right corner of my mouth removed, my crooked tooth would straighten up? And if so, how long would it take? Thanks
A. It is very difficult to give you an answer without seeing you. It is highly unlikely removal of a wisdom tooth would cause your teeth to straighten naturally. Orthodontics can now be done in a number of ways and is probably the best way to straighten your teeth.

Q. I had braces when i was younger to straighten my upper front teeth as the to teeth adjacent to my two middle front teeth were twisted. I have a piece of wire stuck behind my upper front teeth to keep them straight but recently they have started to move again because of my wisdom coming through. They are also slightly discoloured because I smoke. Do you think lumineers (the type of veeners that are stuck on without filing dow…i think this is what they’re called?) would work? what would you suggest? and what are the costs involved? Thanks so much!
A. Hi,
It looks like you had a bonded retainer to keep your teeth aligned. Movement of the teeth indicates that the retainer is not longer bonded on properly.
Treatment to correct this, can involve veneers but without stabilising the position of the teeth, they may continue to move.
Another round of orthodontic treatment may be required. If it is not too severe, the Inman aligner is a great treatment to get the teeth back in line and relatively cheaperly. Once realigned another bonded retainer or clear retainer should help prevent this reoccurring.
The orthodontic treatment using the inman aligner would cost approximately £1500, whilst veneers – be it lumineer s or traditional veneers approximately £3000 – £4000 depending on your cosmetic requirements.

Hi, I basically have a cost question. I have a few issues with my teeth, nothing major but enough that I’m considering having them fixed. I can’t seem to find a cost-quote though, I’ve read a load of material but nothing with a price-list!.. Anyway, the problems I have are:
Q. 1) I have a twisted tooth on the lower jaw, it’s the one immediately to the right of my left incisor. It’s always been twisted so I was wondering if this was fix-able and also what the cost of doing it would be.
2) Again on the lower jaw, the second tooth from the left incisor has moved forward from the others, this has happened within the last 6months or so. It has always been slightly forward but it seems to have moved more recently. It has, however, set in place now so I was, again wondering if this was fix-able and also at what cost.
3) The most urgent problem I have is with my upper jaw, the tooth to the right of the “big2″ has moved behind the big2 somewhat. This happened pretty much overnight, perhaps due to sleeping on my arm. It felt sore for a while but then it seemed to set in place, then again a few weeks later I awoke to find it was sore once more. It has basically popped behind the “big2″ and the right incisor, so again, was wondering if this is fixable and at what cost.
Those are the three things I would like to have fixed if possible, and if you could provide me with a quote/ortho-reccomendation, I’d be more than grateful! Also, as a side-note, I’m 21 and male. And a general point is that I think my teeth may be a little “crowded” since they sometimes feel cramped and I’m guessing this is why the teeth have moved around, lack of space may be causing them to migrate!.. Anyway, thank you in advance for your time and response. It’s much appreciated and a big help. Kind Regards K
A. Dear K,
My first thoughts are that you need to diagnose why the teeth have moved and how stable they are. This is hugely important, to find out if there is a reason, such as gum disease causing bone loss around the teeth, as you must correct it before starting any cosmetic stuff. Also it might affect the best way of tackling the problem you have. Our prices are on the website www.e-dentalpractice.co.uk in the services section download the pdf on the right side of the page.
My Second thoughts are that 21years old is young for gum problems and that sleeping on your arm should not affect healthy teeth.
If you can make to central Birmingham shops/financial district I can offer a free no obligation assessment to give you some options and some prices to consider and at that point you might even be able to price compare. It can be tricky to make comparisons if you haven’t got the basic agreement on the treatment route or the specifications so this would be a good start.
Regards Rob
