Q. hi there i had root canal monday. the next day and wed i didn’t feel any thing but thurs and today the surrounding area feels sore is this normal. i think the root canal has worked because the tooth its self no longer hurts but like underneath the tooth(if that makes sense) and surrounding area feels sore . i am terrified of getting an absese by the way . kind regds
A. Bruising can peak 4-5 days after a root canal, if it continues to get worse after this you should return to your dentist as further treatment may be needed.

Q. how can you find out whether you have decay under a metal porcelain bridge and if so, what should be done. Dull pain at gum area. X ray shows nothing
A. This can be difficult but Xrays taken at various angles sometimes show decay. However if this does not show decay you may have gum inflammation that can be treated by your hygienist. Symptoms of decay are usually sensitivity to cold initially becoming more painful with heat later as the nerve becomes infected.

Q. can smoking and drinking affect my teeth?
A. Smoking obviously stains your teeth but is alsoa predisposing factor for gum disease. Drinking sugary drinks causes decay, drinking acidic drinks dissolves your teeth away and alcohol can cause both as well as a factor in oral cancer.

Q. hi i have the start of tiny pittting to my front top 2 teeth but not decay. each tooth also has white half moons on the tips (i have been told these white markings are genetic) the white half moons change daily from white to yellow (have u ever heard of anything like this before). my dentist says i have 2 choices he can either bond my teeth which would enable him to tone down the white bringing the colour more all together or bleach my teeth. i dont know what to do? i dont want to damamge my teeth i dont want a holowood smile just a more uniformed coloured front teeth . kind regds
A. The white patches on your teeth can be caused by many things but often is due to a change in calcium metabolism at the time of the front teeth tooth formation. My first treatmetn of choice would be totry bleaching but please be aware tha tthe white spots will get a lot whiter and stand out form the surrounding teeth. However once the bleaching is finished you will find the white patches will fade to blend in with the whiter surrounding teeth. If you still need bonding or veneers this can be done later

Q. I have toothache in my left front tooth. They were sensitive and I am using the sensodyne pro-namel toothpaste which was gradually making the problem better over time. However a few days ago toothache started in my left front tooth and the sensitivty has almost completely gone away in just the last 2 days since the toothache started. The tooth hurts when i put any small pressure onto it and has grown from mild pain from time to time to constant mild pain. What is wrong and what should I do?
A. You need to go and se a dentist to see if the tooth has decay or is being irritated by the position of the bite.
Kind regards

Q. My 14 year old son has a mild underbite. What treatments are available to correct it. I’m fairly sure that wearing braces would be something of an uphill struggle!
A. With underbites the first treatment of choice is orthodontics. However your son needs to be motivated to clean his brace properly to prevent gum disease and tooth decay whilst he is undergoing treatment. For a boy of 14 I would not recommend other forms of treatment.

I WAS IN AGONY ALL SUN NIGHT AND TOOK X2 LOTS CO-CODAMOL PAINKILLERS WOULD NOT BUDGE PAIN AND TOOK X2 LOT SAME THING THIS MORNING. NOT SEEING DENTIST TILL TOMORROW. CAN YOU PLEASE ADVISE. MANY THANKS. PAIN IS UNBEARABLE. I WAS IN TEARS.
A. Your dentist definitely needs to xray the area to determine if there is infection present
If nothing can be found then you can try wearing an Aqualizer www.aqualizer.co.uk to determine if the pain is due to your grinding or have your dentist make a guard to prevent this problem during stressfiul periods

Q. I have 4 crowns in the front (top) I just noticed as I was flossing today the area I thought had food seems to be more like a wearing of the side of the crowns (2). Does this happen and what do you do about it besides new crowns. I know–go to the dentist. I have had them approximately 17-20 years. Thank you
A. crowns do not wear on their side- you probably have decay and need new crowns

Q. Hi, i have a tiny bit of black/brown on 2 bottom teeth in 1 corner of each teeth – the area that meets the gum. I brush my teeth twice daily, use mouth wash twice daily and floss a few times a week. Is this tartar build up? or something else? Thank you
A. It could decay so it should be checked out by you dentist.

Q. are dental bridges good to have for decaying teeth
A. All dental disease needs to be treated – ie decay removed prior or at the time of the bridge preparation

Q. Hello, I was suffering from toothache a month or so ago – caused by an abscess, which in turn was caused by gum decease. Although I brush, floss and use mouthwash regularly; like many people: if it isn’t a problem, I don’t go to the dentist. And in my case, I hadn’t been to a dentist in over 20 years. I’ve been told that I’ll probably require a bridge… The thought of having to remove a false tooth for cleaning fills me with dread! If I have to have the tooth removed – and because it’s in a prominent place (lower front) are there any ‘permanent’ alternatives… ie. Fix and forget?
A. Yes, a dental implant is a permanent solution for missing teeth. But you must go to a dentist as Gum disease can cause all of your teeth to eventually fall out.

Q. Hi, Im 21 and I have had a root filling in my front tooth a while ago, which made it appear discoloured, i then decided to get my teeth whitened, before the treatment i asked my dentist if the whitening would work on the root filled tooth as this was the main reason for the treatment, he said he would whiten the tooth from the inside and fill it again, after doing this i went back for a follow up appointment where he replaced the filling again and added more whitening treatment, my tooth felt very thin after this that i didnt even think he had filled it yet, when i mentioned it felt very hollow he said he had filled it. On a 3rd follow up appointment he was going to replace the filling again until i mentioned i thought the whiteness of the tooth appeared “grainy” again, he THEN suggested getting a crown and to go away and think about it. Shouldnt this have been suggested in the beginning? I then noticed a crack appearing in my tooth from the inside and today while brushing my teeth the tooth has cracked off completely. I’m so upset as it looks awful. Is there something the dentist could do straight away as i couldnt face going into work with no tooth. thanks.
A. I am one of the few dentists in the country who could give you a new tooth within a few hours. Please ring my practice on 01727854429 to see if we can see you this week. I certainly understand your embarrassment but it is a very unusual situation for a front tooth to fracture like this unless there was a lot of decay present in the tooth before youre dentist started treatment.
