How can I get rid of white stains?

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Q. After two nights using NiteWhite ACP 22% I noticed white stains on my teeth. Should I continue with the whitening or will the white stains get even worse and more noticeable? How can I get rid of these white stains? Is it possible to get an even color now or are these white stains staying ? Can the dentist get rid of them ?

A. The white stains are areas of enamel that were white before you started treatment but at a level that was not noticable.  They become more pronounced during treatment but blend back in once bleaching is stopped

Is its true that white fillings are provided by NHS?

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Q. Hi. I read in ‘Guide to NHS dental Services’ that white fillings are provided by NHS(doesn’t specify front or back). I called a few practices to ask this and I was told that white fillings are available only for the front teeth. But my children had white fillings at the back and didn’t pay anything. So which is the truth?

A.

I would recommend that you contact the BDA as I have not been involved with NHS dentistry for many years

Is there a way to whiten the discolored dental bridge?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. I’ve had a fixed dental bridge about 15 years ago. Somehow they became sort of grayish in color. I can not afford to have then redone, so is there a way to whiten them?

A. You can not whiten porcelain so the only option would be to replace the bridge.

Is its possible to replace amalgam fillings?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. Hi, I am 15 and have suffered from amelogenesis imperfecta my whole life. At the moment, all of my molars have stainless steel caps on them and most of my teeth are heavily restored with amalgam fillings. Apparently, these restorations were stronger when I was younger, but now I am getting bullied at school because it looks like I am chewing tin foil all the time! Is it possible to get these replaced with tooth coloured restorations and can this be done on the NHS?

A. It might be possible to get porcelain crowns on these teeth, ask your dentist to see what he might be able to do on the NHS for you.

What are the best possible treatments for yellow teeth?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. I have quite yellow teeth, always have since a child. I have recently had bone grafts in both upper and lower jaw due to peridontal disease.Which i am told has been stopped. Now i need 4 crowns.I would like whiter teeth before the new crowns are made. The dentist told me that as i smoke the results will only last a few months?.So i may have to opt for two veneers on the canine teeth, which are the darkest teeth. I live in Cyprus ,so a UK visit is not an option with dental costs involved. What do you think about whitening as opposed to the 2 veneers. Do you have any contact info of a clinic that uses the enlighten system in Cyprus. For over 30 years all i ever wanted was a nice smile, now im confused and wary!!!Please help.

A. I would rather you tried whitening you can always have veneers later. I use the enlighten system and think its the best you could try contacting the enlighten company directly to find a dentist.

Gum swollen and numbness problems after Molar filled

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Q. I got my upper left Molar filled about two weeks ago it was a deep filling I was told almost to the nerve. Now I am having numbness on my left side tongue, all the outer parts of my cheek, and only half of my lips, and some of the outer skin surrounding my lips. This is all however on my left side only. My gum is a little swollen around the tooth but nothing very prominant. Will this go away or has there been trauma to the nerve? I have had it for about a week now. I also have Multiple Sclerosis and want to make sure it is not related to this since the pain came on a week later. Please help!! I do not have dental insurance so I don’t want waste a trip to the dentist if I don’t need to. This also has affected my taste of things.

A. There are a few possibilities. the most frequent cause is temporary bruising around the injection site used to block lower molars. as you have ms I would check with your doctor if you have numbness that hasn’t improved 1 week after the fillings.

do we require a new filling after i lost the old filling?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q. I had root canal treatment severeal years ago and now the filling has been lost. My dentists told me that I won’t need a filling, but I can feel the tooth if I tap against it!! Is this normal opr should I have no feeling at all? I am a nervous patient and would like some reassuarnce as I don’t really want to start and then have to stop due to the pain,

A. The seal above a root filling is almost as important as the root seal. If you plan to keep the tooth in the longer term, I would want reassurance that the broken filling was still a good seal.

My white composite filling is ruff and is concave in shape

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
Q. I recently had an old amalgam filling removed by an NHS dentist and replaced with a glass resin composite filling and topped at the end with a white one because it was so large. I ended up having to pay for this privately as the NHS don’t do white fillings. My only problem with it now is that it feels rough and rather than it being shaped to look like the contours of a molar, my dentist left a concave shape in the middle of it. Is this normal? As far as I was aware white composite fillings are supposed to be time consuming, but somehow my dentist did three of these in 40 minutes.

A. Hi
you need to talk to the dentist about your concerns , the shape of the filling will reflect what fits with your bite.
the time taken will reflect the postion and size of the fillings

Will teeth whitening affect the filling

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q. I recently broke my front three teeth in half, and the dentist was able to fill them in to look just as good as before; however, i have been looking into getting my teeth whitened but i dont know if this will damage the false sections of my teeth?! thank you

A. The false sections won’t change colour so they may need resurfacing after the whitening. The whitening process doesn’t damage the teeth or the fillings

Teeth are grey after the root filling

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q. Hi, I had a root filling in one of my front teeth about a year and a half ago. My tooth is now grey and extremely noticable. Is there anything I can do about it as its constantly on my mind and Im really self conscious about it?

A. There a lots of things you can do in this situation
Internal bleaching is carried out on teeth that have a good quality root filling and only a moderate restoration but have discoloured. This procedure can often improve the appearance several shades. a veneer is sometimes used if a further improvement is needed
A crown is an alternative on heavily restored teeth.
some practices like ours offer a free initial consultation with a dentist to help assess the best option in individual cases.

have had a couple of amalgam fillings replaced with white ones and the teeth look really grey

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have had a couple of amalgam fillings replaced with white ones and the teeth look really grey (you can tell where the grey filling was) is there any way of rectifying this? Iwas hoping to have all my amalgams replaced but the ones I have had look worse than before! I’d also like to know whether I’d be suiable for tooth whitening if my teeth have tetracyclene staining? Many thanks.

A. Hi many thanks for your enquiry, this is a very common problem when replacing silver fillings for white fillings. the silver material sometimes stains the tooth tissue, so even once the silver material is removed the tooth can appear grey, the only option then is for the dentist to accept this as a comprimise and fill the tooth, this however does mean the tooth may still look grey even with a white filling. the other option is to drill the tooth deep enough until all the stained tooth tissue is removed. this will then resolve the problem once filled but can result in the tooth needing extra treatment due to the deep drilling such as root canal treatment and crown work in the future.

The other option would be to leave the silver fillings and crown the teeth using the silver material as cores for the crowns. this would ensure that the colour of the crowns woul be as white as you wanted with no stained tooth tissue shining through.

the best thing would be to seek the advice of a cosmetic dentist.

Front teeth hurt after filling is done to side teeth

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q. Hi, I had a couple of side teeth worked on, and had a filling done. My front teeth were never sensitive before this procedure..Now it hurts really bad when something cold hits the 2 front teeth. She said to try Sesodyne, but it did absolutely nothing! What can I do? Thanks,

A. Well it sounds like those teeth need to be assessed it is very difficult to give you a diagnosis without seeing you.  When you bite your teeth together does it feel different to before or uncomfortable?? The new filling may be a little low which has altered your bite and put more pressure on your front teeth.  The other causes could be your gums…I am afraid I am only able to give you by best guesses without seeing you.

I want to remove the discoloration and fillings in my teeth and

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q. I am 49 and unfortunately have a mouthful of fillings dating back to my teens. I would love to have these fillings removed as my teeth are discolored. What is the best thing I could do to improve the appearance of my mouth without spending too much money.

A. Replacing the most visble fillings with decent tooth coloured bonded resin and doing a little tooth whitening gives a lot of result for a minimal fee.

A. It sounds like it might be worth poping back to have it looked at again and maybe redone.
