I Tongue Thrust At Night And It’s Made The Lower Portion Of My Face Look Out Of Proportion. Would I Need Jaw Surgery To Correct This?

Friday, June 27th, 2014
Q.

Hey there. For many years my teeth have appeared as perfect although I do have a slight open bite. However, this is not my main concern as I tongue thrust every night and this has pushed both my top and bottom teeth forward which has projected my mouth beyond the straight line between the tip of my nose and chin. The combination of this and my facial features makes the lower third of my face look out of proportion to the rest of my face. It seems my jaw protrudes the straight line between my forehead and mouth. I am not sure what you think of think about this you would probably need to see a picture if I am right? Could this be solved by simply closing the open bite with braces or is jaw surgery to reduce the size of the lower jaw needed? Would a lip reduction benefit me?

Thanks so much for your reply in advance.

My Teeth Have Relapsed After Braces Treatment. I’m Scared They Will Relapse Again Due To My Tongue Thrusting. What Can I Do?

Friday, March 28th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Patel,
I had a bad thumb sucking habit until I was 15. I am 22 now.

I had braces when I was 16 to correct my overbite but my gap never completely closed. My teeth relapsed a bit but are still not as bad as they were before the treatment.

However I am still not happy with my teeth and wanted braces again to pull my teeth down. I am scared that they will relapse due to my tongue thrusting. I normally swallow by pushing tongue forward behind my front to teeth or even touching my lower lip.

I have tried to find places that correct this or provide treatment but have been unsuccessful. I am based in the Midlands and would really appreciate help and guidance.

Thanks, I hope to hear from you in the near future.

I Am About To Have Braces And Surgery To Correct An Open Bite. I’d Like To Know If There Are Any Methods Of Curing Tongue Thrusts Also?

Friday, January 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, I’m 17 and I have an open bite. I am about to get braces on in preparation the have the surgery to improve this problem. However one of the orthodontists I visited said he could not help me due to the problem being caused by my tongue (this was before I was considered for surgery). None of the other orthodontists I have seen have mentioned my tongue so I was wondering if I should mention it to them however I don’t want them to be like the first orthodontist and say they can’t do anything about it. Do you know any methods to get rid of tongue thrust? Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide me with.

I Have Severe Tongue Thrusting Habits That I Can’t Control, Please Help!

Friday, June 28th, 2013
Q.

hi
i have lots of gaps and spaces in my teeth and they are oushed forward and i cant stand them.
i have had braces before when i was 14 they were fixed metal braces but i never finised the treatment as i lost my retainers.

i have tried my hardest not to suck my tongue to the point i get jaw ache in the morning. But i have since relapsed and my teeth have been pushed out even further.

i suck my tongue and i cannot stop. i have looked into this and i have seen there might be some sort tongue retainer i could use to train my tongue to stop pushing my teeth forward subconciously.

please would you be able to recommend treatment for me as i want braces but do not want to do braces first without trying to treat my problem first.

hope you can help

My Daughter’s Teeth Are Still Moving Despite Her Fixed Braces, Is This Normal?

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013
Q.

Hi
My daughter is 16 and has had fixed braces twice now for protruding front teeth. after the first time she was told to wear retainers only in the evening for a year. during this year i noticed that her teeth had moved to their previous position before braces. after complaining to the orthodontists he again fitter fixed braces for a year after pulling 4 teeth. he has now taken the fixed braces off and given her the invisalign to wear only at night. she has been wearing the invisalign for 4 months and her teeth have moved forward again. he says that it is acceptable for them to protrude 4mm but i feel that after all this treatment they should be in line with the back teeth and not protrude at all. is 4mm acceptable or should she have further treatments? is invisalign the right way to go?

Will braces help correct the gaps between my teeth, even though I am a tongue thruster?

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012
Q.

Dear Sir ,

I have huge gap between my upper and lower teeth which looks so awakward that I cannot explain .I consulted few doctors here and received mixed advises. Most of them said that I should go for Braces however few of them convinced me saying that the gaps are due to the pusing and touching tendency of my toungue , which is relatively bigger than normal.Even if I get the gaps fixed by using braces for long [eriod of time , there is no guarantee that the gaps will not come again. Kindly advise me what should be the suitable and economical treatment for my case.

Thank you in advance.
