I’m worried that teeth whitening will ruin my teeth.

Q.

Dear Dentist

My question is regards to whitening Is Hydrogen Peroxide bad for your teeth or whitening in general does it cause cavities if you used say 30% in house bleaching?
I am confused because it is a weak acid so why do we use it on whitening?

Does a high percent of Hydrogen Peroxide not cause cracks in teeth or make them matte/loose their shine?

How does whitening work? thank you for your time

Can I whiten my cap with a home whitening kit?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.

I have a cap on my front tooth due to a childhood prank,I have slightly stained teeth with the cap tooth being a slightly different colour.I am thinking about buying a home whitening kit to imrove the teeth, will the product affect this tooth? is there a chance that the cap will never be the same colour as the rest of th teeth?I was also told that any teeth whitening products cause long term damage to the tooth,is that so?

Many thanks

My daughter’s tooth is grey, can teeth whitening help?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr I recently asked the following question Q. One of my 15 year old daughter's front teeth is dark grey. Her dentist says it is as a result of bleeeding inside the tooth, but it is still alive and recommended tooth whitening (smile-x) on just that one tooth. The tooth is not stained; the discolouration has happened inside of the tooth and so I don't see how whitening the outside of the tooth will help. Is there any method of possibly whitening the inside of the tooth? I do not want her to have veneers. What is your opinion? Thank you for your time.
A. You cannot have internal bleaching on a tooth that has not had root canal treatment. I recommend you have this tooth x-rayed and ask your dentist to do a pulp test. If the reason for the tooth discolouration is internal bleeding, the tooth is definately dead. In this case it need to have a Root Canal, you then can try internal bleaching.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Our dentist says the discolouration must be as a result of a knock, possibly some years before. However, my daughter has never fallen or hit that tooth. It was the same colour as all her other teeth before orthodontic treatment started and the discolouration only became apparent the day her fixed retainers were removed. During treatment, following tightening of the retainers, she often had pain for a few days and also experienced occasional bleeding around the gum line in that area. Could it be the orthodontic treatment itself that caused this problem?

The dentist has x-rayed the tooth and tested it by blowing cold air on it. I am not sure whether a pulp test was done, but the dentist assures me that the tooth is not dead and that a root canal is not necessary. Therefore I presume that internal bleaching is not an option. I am suspicious that the whitening suggested by our dentist would just make the tooth look a brighter grey and possibly show up even more. Also, the dentist said she would have to do this treatment every two months for the rest of her life, which is quite a daunting commitment for someone so young.

I would very much appreciate any advice you could give me. Thank you.

Can I have a veneer put on my sharp canine tooth?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.

Hello Doctor

I have a sharp canine tooth which is not aesthetically pleasing and I wondered if it would be safe to have a porcelain veneer put on it?

Additionally, my two front teeth are longer than I’d like them to be and wondered if it was safe to have they filed down and I wondered how much that would cost on average and if it would cause any future problems?

Lastly, is teeth whitening safe?

thank you for your time

What is the best option for whitening my discoloured, sensitive teeth?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.

Dear Doctor,

I have discolored teeth and would like to have this corrected. I have already tried the more widely available teeth whitening strips but my teeth became very sensitive soon after so I had to stop using them. I also developed a very thin, white vertical line down one of my front teeth and thought that the enamel had been damaged by the strips.

I feel from this experience that a professional laser whitening system would not suit me. I am reluctant to get veneers because I feel it is too invasive to natural teeth.

I have heard of cosmetic bonding and was wondering if this was an option to whiten teeth. Some sources say that bonding can only be used to correct smaller stains, but some suggest that it can be used to whiten the entire tooth.

Please could you tell me if cosmetic bonding is suitable for tooth whitening, Thank You.

Has teeth whitening given me craze lines?

Friday, June 3rd, 2011
Q.

Dear Dentist

I had my teeth whitening in house using 27% Hydrogen Peroxide about 2 months ago. I noticed I have craze lines since. Can a high percentage cause crazing?

Also can you feel crazes in teeth because I can hold ice in my teeth and literally go straight from hot to cold nicely and eat nuts etc? But sometimes in the wind Ill breathe then Ill wet my teeth after and they tingle/burn. Is this a sign of cracked teeth or just sensitivity? As I feel I have damaged them now due to the whitening?

Regards

My new crowns are too white, is there anything I can do?

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr. Verma,
I just had 14 lava (porcelain) crowns permanently cemented on upper 14 teeth and they are TOO white. They did not look this white when I signed and approved them. Is there any way you can tone them down once they are on permanently? I am a bit nervous on how to ask current dentist about this as they spent a lot of time with me trying to choose the correct color white. There are simply too many colors of white to choose from –

Thank-you,

Can Hydrogen Peroxide harm my teeth?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

Please can you answer the following please?

Is 27% Hydrogen Peroxide really harmful to the teeth and pulp? Can it cause craze lines or worsen them?

Would I feel 27% Hydrogen Peroxide if it spilled directly onto my gums or lip area?

(When my dentist was carrying out in chair I accidently dribbled some of my saliva on to my lips, would this harm my lips as it might have touched the peroxide then feel onto my lips?)

Also I heard that Hydrogen peroxide has the toxic hydroxyl radical and I am wondering if this can get into your blood stream via your pulp in your teeth and produce free radical damage in your mouth area and promote cancer cells.

I know I am looking in to this but I am really worried, I may look a bit of a hypochondriac but I read that Hydrogen Peroxide is a weak cancer promoter and a lot of people in my family have died due to cancer illness, I feel now I have had in surgery teeth whitening I have promoted a carcinogen cascade of free radical damage that will keep multiplying and I will get oral cancer from this.

Thank you for your time

Sorry if this sounds over the top, but please can you answer my questions, thank you

I would like a Hollywood smile. What are my options?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

hi there dont really know what treatment I need as my teeth are fine but I have gaps inbetween the bottom set. They are very discoloured & i would basically like a hollywood smile as I havent smiled in pictures for years as i am so embarressed about my teeth. can you recommend what I need to look into & how much it would roughly cost. I use to be a smoker so that hasnt help. I am just so fed up of covering my mouth everytime I speak to someone my confidence is so low due to my teeth. I have a very special occasion coming up and want to look perfect & I know with beautiful teeth my confidence will grow. After having my 1st child I had the gaps filled in my top set due to gum infection this was on the nhs but still not happy . my dentist has said that my teeth are very strong but they just look so unattractive. Nobody has commented my husband thinks I am perfect but without a beautiful smile I just dont feel it. I have no idea how to go about this & what I need done. I am a mum of 2 & 32 years old & do feel guily about spending on my teeth but I know If i get this done family and friends will see a big diffrence in my confidence. thank you so much for your time.

Has teeth whitening damaged my teeth?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

Dear Dentist

I had my teeth whitening in surgery and my dentist used 27% Hydrogen Peroxide. Since then I run my tongue over my teeth and they feel slightly rough. I ca also see abrasive brush and scratch marks on the enamel in light on my canines. And when I run my nail over them they feel lumpy. I never studied or felt my teeth like this before but could a high level peroxide potentially burn or change the texture of your enamel? I feel as if I have damaged the structure of my teeth?

Also does tooth whitening with high level peroxide permanently make the enamel more porous and prone to cavities?

Thank you for your time
