Q. I wanted to get my teeth whitened but i have a crown on my right front tooth and on my left front tooth the anamel wore away really bad so my dentist put some sort of layer on top of it , can i still whiten my teeth and if i do will it change the color of my crown?
A. Thanks for your question, whitening procedures will only whiten your natural tooth tissue. Therefore any restorations which you have had placed in the past would remain the same colour. When my patients, who have a crown or veneer wish to whiten their teeth, they would normally have the restorations replaced afterwards. I hope this helps.

Q. MY TEETH ARE REALLY YELLOW IS THERE ANY CHANCE THAT AFTER HAVING THE TEETH WHITENING PROCESS THEY MIGHT NOT CHANGE COLOUR, AND CAN YOU CHOOSE WHETHER YOU HAVE THE SURGERY WHITENING OR THE HOME-MADE TRAYS?
A. Thanks for your questions, with the latest teeth whitening products available from your dental professional, you should expect your teeth to whiten noticably. Although the dentist will advise you of the best whitening products they offer, the choice of home kits or in surgery procedures should be your own. I hope this helps.
Many thanks

Q. I have been using the Opalesence whitening and have been wearing the gum shields and using the gel for over a week now every other night. However my teeth are extremely sensitive at the minute and I am considering other methods. I dont notice much difference in my teeth either.
A. hi many thanks for your email, the whitening will work it is however a time thing. if the teeth are sensitive i would use the follow regime:
do the whitening twice daily for an hour each time for two weeks you will see a definate difference.
hope this is helpful.

Q. I had root treatment on one of my front teeth years ago and the tooth has gone grey, would whitening help or would a veneer be preferable, if so how much would one veneer cost? Thanks
A. hi many thanks for your email, the gery tooth can be treated by internal whitening but this is sometimes unpredictable and even if the tooth whitens sometimes the colour can reverse.
the veneer is more predictable and long term, the cost of a single tooth veneer can range from £500 – £1200. dependant on where you go. my charge is usually £750.
hope this is helpful.

Q. ive got an appointment to have my teeth whitened, via lazer and then the trays i have alot of veneres,im aware they cant be whitened wont my teeth look odd with some bright white and others yellow as i smoke what can be done about the yellow teeth ? thankyou fort your time
A.
Thanks for your questions. As you are a smoker, the use of a stain removal system by your dentist or hygienist, may improve the appearance of your veneers. However, when my patients have had veneers in the past and now wish to have their teeth whitened, they have usually made the decision to replace the veneers to match the whitened shade of the teeth. You are correct in thinking that your natural teeth and the colour of your veneers may be quite different after the procedure. I hope this helps.

Q. Hi, I have had lumineers for about 2 years, and I had bulimia for most of that time, I noticed recently that they are yellow, especially towards the gumline, I bought white strips, but it says it doesn’t work on veneers, What is the best way for me to whiten my teeth? is it possible to whiten them? please advise. Thank you.
A. If the underlying tooth is dark it is very difficult to whiten them. Whitening gels may damage your veneers the only option may be to replace them.

Q. Hi Dr Solanki, I was just in need of some smile advice! I am currently 24 and male and would like the perfect smile like everyone else! I don’t have bad teeth, infact i think they are quite good. However one of my front teeth and the one next to it were broken as a child and they have been built up using white composite and so look discoloured (Dead) they are greyish and it seems to get worse. I would love to have my teeth whitened and something done for these to match what would you suggest? i also would like my back doubles evening out on one side as they uneven my smile? I can sen d you a picture maybe if that helps? Thanks for you time, Much Appreciated
A. hi, the first thing would be to book a consultation so i can assess your teeth. however from the information you have provided, i think the plan of action would be:
1: tooth whitening
2:veneers or crowns(all porcelain) on the two front teeth.
3:assessment of the uneven smile on the back teeth to see how best to correct this.
hope this is helpful. And yes a picture would be helpful.

Q. i have extremely yellow teeth. i dont smoke, drink tea or coffe so i dont understand why my teeth should be so yellow. please could you tell me why this is happening and what i could do to get them a bit more presentable in other words whiter. please answer me as soon as possible because i need to start smiling with confidence thankyou.
A. The yellowness of your teeth is based on the proportion of enamel to dentine and the water content of the dentine. A simpler way to treat this is to have your teeth professionally bleached by a dentist. Treatment can take from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on the type of internal stain

Q. I have been a sufferer of bulimia nervosa for about 8 years now and have suffered very severe enamel erosion as a result of it – I haven’t been to see the dentist in a long time because I know my mouth is a disaster area and until I have managed to recover I don’t want any dental work done that I might later wreck again. I imagine my mouth is full of cavities etc so that will have to be treated and I was also wondering what the cost of cosmetic treatment would be? At the very least I would guess I need crowns on upper front teeth (front 6 at least) because they are transparant at the edges – every tooth in my mouth has a greyish discolouring where my teeth are turning transparant at the tips and are mostly yellow everywhere else so I will most likely need cleaning and whitening too. Could you estimate the cost of this treatment? Is treatment even possible do you recon? Thank you for your time.
A. I have experience treating patients with severe loss of enamel due to various types of acid damage. Often crowns are required due to enamel damage on the inside surfaces of the teeth. Due to the tongue position when you are being sick the damage is often limited to the upper teeth. Treatment in the past has cost from £6000 depending on how many teeth need to be treated. I also make a mouth guard that you can wear to protect your teeth during your illness. Please visit me for a free consultation if you wish to discuss this further.

Q. I was born with a discolouration on my teeth (a slightly yellowy checkered effect up close) due to how I passed through the birth canal or something like that! Would zoom whitening work on my teeth or would this only emphasise the problem? Thanks
A. hi many thanks for your email, with such intrinsic staining there are two outcomes with tooth whitening, the first is the problem will decrease and the staining will blend, the second outcome is that the whitening will emphisize the problem. the main concern is that until you try you wont know.
hope this is helpful.

Q. Hiya, my teeth developed without the enamel being there when i was younger and i’ve been left with ugly discoloured teeth. Am i still able to have my teeth whitened?
A.
If you have amelogenesis imperfecta it is unlikely that bleaching will help. You will need some type of porcelain restoration to replace your missing enamel

Q. After two nights using NiteWhite ACP 22% I noticed white stains on my teeth. Should I continue with the whitening or will the white stains get even worse and more noticeable? How can I get rid of these white stains? Is it possible to get an even color now or are these white stains staying ? Can the dentist get rid of them ?
A. The white stains are areas of enamel that were white before you started treatment but at a level that was not noticable. They become more pronounced during treatment but blend back in once bleaching is stopped

Q. hi, im thinking of getting the replacement veneers. i had them for 15 yrs now. i was wondering, is it a good thing for a dentist to whiten my teeth (ones that have veneers) before placing the new veneers. some dentist said that it’s a good idea because it would deminish the grayish effect after the veneer is placed. and wont make my teeth very sensitive since it’s been grinded due to veneers?
A. Whitening is more for the teeth without veneers if you do like their colour get whitening then have the veneers replaced.
