I m 14,will I be able to get the braces and whats the cost?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. Hiya, I’m 14 and have just been advised to get braces :( . I have a huge overbite due to sucking my thumb at an early age and I really hate it. I’m really interested in getting my teeth straightened, have deneers and having my teeth whitened. Will I be able to get this treatment at my age and how much will it cost? Thanks.

A. At your age you can have braces on the NHS at no cost, however this does depends on your case but it sounds like you may be a candidate.
Veneers are not recommended at your age. I think you will find that once your  teeth are straightened you will not need veneers. If you would like to whiten your teeth i advise you wait till you are 18.
Kind regards

Can the two uneven front teeth be made straight?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. My 2 front teeth on top are slightly uneven. One of them is straight on the bottom, and the other is slightly curved and hangs just a little bit lower. Can the one that is curved be filed down to match the one next to it so that they are both straight?

A. You can trim teeth but only by a small amount otherwise they become weak and sensitive

Treatment for misalligned and over crowded teeths

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Q. My teeth are misalligned and are over crowded..what treatment could you recommend other than braces. i dont mind teeth being removed if the outcome will be that they are straight thanks

A. Thanks for your e-mail, there are many Orthodontic products available through dental practices, with treatment times starting at as little as four weeks. However, if you have decided this is not a route you wish to take, I would advise that you visit a cosmetic dentist to discuss the possibililty of using Veneers to assist in creating you a perfect new smile.  I hope that this will be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further advise. Kindest regards. Dr Kailesh Solanki.

Can u tell me rough cost for 4 front teeth straightening

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Q. Hi, I am thinking of having some kind of treatment to straighten my teeth, and am not sure about which route to take. I am currently considering both cosmetic and orthodontic procedures. I have spoken to my dentist, who has been really unhelpful, and pretty obstructive, refusing to talk about either option, saying she isn’t qualified. She refused to answer even the basics, like would I be able to have invisible braces fitted? She has referred me to an orthodontist, but this will cost me £100 for the initial consultation. My question really is, I am 30 years old – how long is it likely that I would have to have fixed braces on for (presuming that this is the only option for me). I think that my teeth are over-crowded, so it’s likely I would have to have teeth out. I was told by an old dentist that I had an overbite of 7mm. If I had to wear this for 2 years or more, I may consider cosmetic work. Can you give me some rough approximations on cost for 4 front teeth straightening? Also can you tell me what is involved with cosmetic work?

A. Hi
Many thanks for your e-mail, although it is impossible to guarantee that you will be a suitable candidate for specific treatments without a consultation, I do feel that you may wish to consider the six month smiles treatment. It may be worth seeking a dentist who provides this treatment with a free initial consultation, so that you can then make an informed choice without financial loss. This treatment could though take up to eight months, worse case scenario. The prices for this treatment will vary between practitioners, however I can advise you that the cost of this treatment at my practice starts from around £1800.
Many Thanks

I need to get my front teeth filed how long does the pain usually last?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009
Q. My two front teeth are longer then the others. I would like to get them filed a little to get them straight. Will it hurt? how long does the pain usually last after getting it done? and will it affect me long term?

A.

Your two upper central teeth are meant to be more dominant than the rest of your teeth. If you have a look a my portfolio- www.umbrellasmiles.com you will see examples of this. It allows the teeth to follow the curve of your lip giving a beautiful smile.
If you really dislike this then you may be able to have them recontoured slightly. This would not be a painful procedure but once you have the length taken away, you cannot have it back so make sure it is something you are sure about before commencing with any treatment.

Does NHS provide invisible braces and quicker teeth straightening methods?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009
Q. Hi, I’m 16 and i realy want my teeth to be straight, i would just like to know, if i can get anything like invisable braces or the ones that only take a month, or the inman aligner, not the normal train track braces. But i can’t pay for it, it would have to be under NHS, is there anything like that that i could have that wont cost me? Please let me know if there is anything, thankyou.

A. Hi,

The NHS are limited on what they provide so unforunately Invisilible braces and quicker methods of teeth straightening are not available. You would need to book in with a private orthodontist if you wanted to have these methods of orthodontics and there would be costs involved.

Kind regards

Thank you.

A. Lingual braces are not something I offer and so I cannot give you costs- sorry

Can i fix braces for free on NHS?

Sunday, September 20th, 2009
Q. I had fixed braces when i was about 11 for seven months, but then eventually discontinued to use the retainer i was given as i got older. I am now 18, and my teeth have moved around so much from when the brace was first taken off, meaning that the retainer obviously no longer fits my mouth. Would you recommend getting fixed braces put back on? If so, would i still be able to get them free on the Nhs, baring in mind that i am still in full time education? Any other recommendations would also be much appreciated.

A. Free orthodontic treatment is extremely unlikely.  You do have other options such as invisalign rather than a fixed brace but all options will be required to be carried out privately most likely.

How to repair crooked teeth without extracting them?

Sunday, September 20th, 2009
Q. Hi i’ve had crooked teeth for a long time. When i was a teenager my parents couldn’t afford to get me braces, back then i didnt mind the way my teeth were i guess because i was so young i didnt care, but now i do not like smiling because my left front tooth sticks out ( i have an overjet) and its really unattractive. i am 21 years old now and i want to get them fixed but in a way scared because 3 years ago i went to an orthodontist and he told me i need 4 teeth extracted because i have severe crowding, over jet, and an over bite. i was actually hoping i would be a candidate for invislign but i wasnt. so here i am 3 years later and i want to get them fixed so bad. i just do not want to get teeth extracted. Now my question is when that orthodoctist said all that to me 3 years ago. Do you think i can be able to fix my teeth with out getting any teeth pulled out? and i just read about the 6 month smile, do you think i will be a candidate for that?.

A. Some orthodontists favour the approach of expanding the arch rather than extraction.  You will need to ring around orthodontists in your area to find out what their views are.

My front teeth are big and have gaps between them can u plz advice?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
Q. I have 4 teeth at the front my two front ones are big with a gap in between and one sits forward then i have two small ones at the side i dont think a brace would help as i hate the size of them i would love 4 new ones i always smile with my lips closed and i asm looking to get married and would love straight teeth the same size so i could smile .

A. It sounds like veneers might help, perhaps even with a bit of realignment with na Inman Aligner.
If you would like me to take a look please feel free to call my clinic on 01245 268494 and we can arrange a free consultation for you

i have protruding teeth how can i get them aligned?

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Q. Hi Dr Caplan, I sent a question about 3 weeks ago and haven’t seen a reply yet so I’m not sure if you received e-mail – apologies if you have received it twice. I am 48 years old and I lost one of my front teeth when I was about 13 years old, I had a fall and the dentist removed the broken tooth and fitted a false one on a pallet which I hated. About 17 years ago I had a bridge fitted which now needs attention as it is starting to wear badly. However my problem is that I have protruding front teeth that I would dearly love to have straightened (they are not so bad and they are not crooked in any way – I think the problem was caused with me having a dummy as a child) Am I right in thinking I cannot have an invisible brace fitted when I have a bridge? If not, what do you think my best option would be where I could have an invisible brace fitted? Can I have the bridge removed and have an implant fitted and a brace fitted then? I do hope you can help me – despite my age, my confidence is rock bottom because of this problem and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time by making an appointment. Many thanks in advance. Many thanks

A. Apologies for the late reply. for the Your problem is definitely complicated by the presence of the bridge.  I have treated cases like yours where I widen the smile using veneers further back to balance the appearance of the front teeth. The treatment usually involves about 10 teeth including  a new bridge. This allows me to create a beautiful smile.  Invisalign may be possible to use to help achieve this but usually this is not required.  Hope this helps and if you would like a free cosmetic consultation please contact my surgery.

I have overcrowded and crooked teeth can i go for invisalign?

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Q. I have over-crowded and crooked teeth (dracula type of teeth). Would invisalign work for me or should I go for cosmetic dentistry? I am also a nervous patient and have a phobia for dentist.

A. If you’re nevous of the dentist Invisalign is a great treatment. Its simple to set up and with only a minor amount of dentistry, great results can be acheived. Have a look at our website: invisalignguide.co.uk

my teeth are on Invisalign but will i have to wear retainers there after?

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Q. Hi. I’m currently having my teeth reset via an Invisalign treatment which is due to be complete in Jan 2010. The focus is on rotating an upper incisor so that it aligns with the rest of my teeth. I’m told that I’ll need to wear retainers at the end of the treatment and am not sure which type to go for. My dentist has a preference for fixed retainers which need to be worn for at least five years though he suggests wearing them indefinitely. However feedback from his other Invisalign patients has been that there has been regression in the molars and pre-molars which has had an impact on the more visble incisors and canines. The alternative are trays much like the Invisalign trays I currently wear. Initially I was told that I’d need to wear these all day and night for six months and then just nights after that. However I’m told by other people with knowledage of such things that wearing them every night from Day One will be more than sufficient. This sounds fine but my concern is that the teeth will constantly be moving – regressing in the day and then being corrected every night… Also I’m concerned about breaking the retainers (which has happened with several of my Invisalign trays). Plus cleaning is a concern as I can never get my Invisalign trays 100% clean no matter how much I brush them. However the latter would be my preference as I could eat and drink whenever I wanted, clean and floss properly, not worry about getting food caught in fixed retainers, etc. Could you offer your advise and expertise in helping me choose. Also I would be very grateful if you could spell out all the pros and cons of both types of retainer, your patients’ experience and perhaps even any alternatives. Kindest regards Harp

A. Retention following orthodontics has varying views depending on who you speak to.  The permanent retainers are a good option because they guarantee the teeth to remain in their final position.  However cleaning can be an issue.  Removable retainers should be worn fro 1 to 2 months 24 hours a day whilst the teeth are held in their final position.  Following this the retainers should be worn at night time for a long time, some say for life.  As you point out this allows easy cleaning.  This is the preferred method in my practice but some patients prefer the permanent retainer option.  The choice is yours

Can a underbite be corrected?

Friday, September 11th, 2009
Q. Hello, I have a slight underbite & I am 14. I am very, very self consisous about it & really want surgery to correct it. Would the orthodontis allow me to have it corrected at 14?

A. If your bite is how I imagine it to be, it is very unlikely that your Orthodontist would recommend surgery until you are at least 18-19 yeras old as the jaw continues to grow until that age.

Im diabetic i noticed a gap btw my front teeth plz advice?

Friday, September 11th, 2009
Q. Hi am 23 year old female, i have type 1 diabetes. i have recently noticed that i am getting a small gap in between my front two teeth, its only small but i am really self conscious am find myself looking at the mirror every hour or so. what would you recommend. thank you

A. It is common for diabetic patients to be unable to fight infection once they get it as well as a completely healthy individual.this is why there is usually a higher occurrance of gum disease . it is possible this applies to your case as a minor gum inflammation.
i would advise a good clean  by a hygienist and allowing time for the gum to heal as it may only be a minor fluctuation in the tissue
