Tooth with its filling fallen out needs to be removed

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Q. Hi my 10 year old daughter was due to have four adult teeth removed one by one by injection so she can have a brace. She has had 2 of them out but one of the ones that was due to be pulled out she had a filling in which has fallen out and now the top of the tooth has come out too what are her opitions? will the root just go away by its self pls help a worried mum and daughter.

A. The root of an adult tooth won’t just disappear like a baby tooth. It sounds like the tooth will still need to be removed in the normal way

Can infected implant be treated?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Q. My question is this, I had an inplant put in next to a 3part bridge. Unfortunately it did’t tak. A few months later we tried agasin, and again it didn’t take. As the second implant was being put in, I could feel my brain rattling and that is no exageration. I left the office and my whole right side of my face swelled up, to the point that I stayed in my bedroom for 3-4 days in the dark. I was on antibiotics and pain meds, but nothing helped. My doctor came in on a sun to see me and I didn’t have parmacy coverage so he gave me a left over antibiotic from his sons. Now my bride was damaged and cracked, and I had to have my teeth pulled due to such infection under bridge. Also my implant on left side is abcessed. What should I do?

A. You need to see your dentist and discuss your way forward

Should I worry about a bone fragment left after my tooth removal?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Q. Dr. Moore! Hope you doing fine, i have a tooth out last week and the day goes by i feel that thier is a small particle tooth left, so i went back to the dentist yesterday and she said that thiers nothing to worry because its a bone..So why the bone comes out? and is it safe even the bone comes out? anyway thank you so much and hope to hear from you soon..

A. It might be a small fragment of dead bone, this commonly comes to the surface when a tooth is removed and will be no problem

Is an implant required after original tooth is removed?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Q. My upper back tooth had to be removed because it was cracked. My dentist and oral surgeon are recommending an implant. The reason is not for cosmetic purposes because it can’t be seen. The oral surgeon said an implant was necessary because the tooth below it would grow taller. But I still don’t understand the problem with that?? And I do have a tooth next to it with a large surface for chewing. I just had it pulled on October 16 so I don’t know what the comfort level will eventually be without an implant. My question is how important is it to have an implant on a tooth so far back and out of sight?

A. The problem is function and stability.  As teeth are lost the surrounding teeth can become unstable and move.  This can cause problems with teeth clashing when you eat that can break pieces off these teeth, gum problems can develop due to unstable contact points, your mouth can become less balanced overloading other teeth etc.  My recommendation would be to have the tooth replaced

Could tooth removal cause nerve damage?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Q. I have an appointment to get a lone tooth extracted from my gum above my top front teeth. It showed up in an xray when I went to find out about braces. In order for me to get the braces my dentist told me i needed to get it removed. Is there a chance i will have nerve damage after this procedure? If so what will the effect be?

A. hi many thanks for your email, on the position of the upper jaw the extraction should not cause nerve damage. hope this is helpful.

Q. Hello im due to have my tooth taken out witch id rather have it capped but how much would it cost to cap a tooth its the front and to the left at the top

Can the process of tooth extraction be quicker?

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Q. I went to my dentist (NHS)for the second time re. my wisdom tooth. I was given antibiotics and she drained some of the infection. I asked to be referred to a specialist for extracion. This takes up to 6 months. I hate taking antibiotics and would rather have the tooth out asap. Can this process happen quicker i.e through private practice? What is the wait for an operation when going private and where could i go? I don’t understand why she seems reluctant to refer me and get it treated properly. I live in London. Best Wishes

A. bupa & nuffield type hospitals will have associated specialist oral surgeons who will provide a quote for your treatment. Rob

Is there any way I could save the tooth which is causing pain?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. Hello i had root canal treatment not long back – i ate something hard and chewy and part of my tooth has come off – its very painful , there is still some tooth there will the pain go away ? and is there any way i could save the tooth

A. Back teeth following root treatment are usually crowned to prevent splitting of the tooth.  It is likely that the piece of tooth you have broken is still attached at the gum level and this is what is causing you pain.  If this is so the dentist should be able to remove the broken part of the tooth and to crown what is remaining

Are there any procedures to bring back my original shape of face?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. When i was in my teens i had a fixed brace to straighten my teeth, teeth were also removed, This totally changed the shape of my face my top lip/chin look empty even though i only had about 4 teeth out, are there any proceedures which could either bring teeth back out even if it meant wearing another brace, i dont really want veneers, i wish id been asked before the brace as id rather have had crooked teeth than a changed face! please help!!

A. hi many thanks for your email, generally the brace treatment which requires extracting teeth does sometimes make your jaws and smile very narrow. my advice would be to use an expander to widen the smile this would refill your face and smile and help to close the gap from what you was like to how you are now. go for a consultation with an cosmetic orthodontist who i am sure will discuss these options with you.
