Should I have discoloured tooth replaced?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. hi dr glaister about 2 years ago i had root canal on my two front teeth, and 1 has gone an off colour. what is my best option to replace my tooth, which is permanant aswell? many thanks,
A. There may be no need to replace your tooth. Most root filled teeth discolour after treatment, some take months and others take years.I would advise that you get a what’s called an ‘internal bleach’ on that tooth. You may have a trustworthy dentist who may do this, othewise, you will have to see who does.

Q. A large filling fell out. I cannot get to the dentist until Monday (today is Friday). What can I do until then? I don’t feel any pain, just some slight discomfort. Thanks,
A. If you can go to a chemist who may have some temporary filling material that you can use to fill the hole until you can see your dentist

Will root canal treatment make my teeth break even more?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
Q. Hi there, I have two very broken front teeth (on the bottom) which have looked awful every time I smile for years. Now they are starting to go grey so they look awful! They don’t hurt most of the time, one hurts when it gets cold but not all the time. The dentist has said I need root canal even though there is no evidence of infection etc and xray is clear. This tooth keeps breaking more every week. I am not bothered about undergoing pain but I want to get BOTH teeth looking nice and not half the size of every other front tooth. What would you suggest? Surely root canal will make them break even more?

A. Without an examination I cannot give a specific recoomendation. In general the dark tooth suggest that  root canal is appropriate. as long as the height is balanced with the upper teeth biting down , you can rebuild the teeth after root treatment.Rob

Why should I be on sedation while removal of tooth?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009
Q. I had my tooth out recently but upon extraction the tooth broke leaving the roots still in my gum, i have now been referred to a specialist to have the remainder out. It says in the letter that i will be under sedation, what does that actually mean i am a very nervous patient and suffer with panic attacks. Can you help?

A. This is the reason for you being sedated – for patients who are very nerves this makes the treatment easier to cope with.  You will remember very little of the appointment and you will feel very relaxed during the treatment.

Tooth with its filling fallen out needs to be removed

Thursday, November 5th, 2009
Q. Hi my 10 year old daughter was due to have four adult teeth removed one by one by injection so she can have a brace. She has had 2 of them out but one of the ones that was due to be pulled out she had a filling in which has fallen out and now the top of the tooth has come out too what are her opitions? will the root just go away by its self pls help a worried mum and daughter.

A. The root of an adult tooth won’t just disappear like a baby tooth. It sounds like the tooth will still need to be removed in the normal way

What are the risk in pulling out wisdom teeth?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
Q. Are there any risks in getting wisdow teeth pulled from only one side of the mouth? Like loss of equalibrium or anything ? And would deep rooted nerves in wisdom teeth cause tinnitus ?

Can infected implant be treated?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
Q. My question is this, I had an inplant put in next to a 3part bridge. Unfortunately it did’t tak. A few months later we tried agasin, and again it didn’t take. As the second implant was being put in, I could feel my brain rattling and that is no exageration. I left the office and my whole right side of my face swelled up, to the point that I stayed in my bedroom for 3-4 days in the dark. I was on antibiotics and pain meds, but nothing helped. My doctor came in on a sun to see me and I didn’t have parmacy coverage so he gave me a left over antibiotic from his sons. Now my bride was damaged and cracked, and I had to have my teeth pulled due to such infection under bridge. Also my implant on left side is abcessed. What should I do?

A. You need to see your dentist and discuss your way forward

Should I worry about a bone fragment left after my tooth removal?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
Q. Dr. Moore! Hope you doing fine, i have a tooth out last week and the day goes by i feel that thier is a small particle tooth left, so i went back to the dentist yesterday and she said that thiers nothing to worry because its a bone..So why the bone comes out? and is it safe even the bone comes out? anyway thank you so much and hope to hear from you soon..

A. It might be a small fragment of dead bone, this commonly comes to the surface when a tooth is removed and will be no problem

Is an implant required after original tooth is removed?

Monday, October 26th, 2009
Q. My upper back tooth had to be removed because it was cracked. My dentist and oral surgeon are recommending an implant. The reason is not for cosmetic purposes because it can’t be seen. The oral surgeon said an implant was necessary because the tooth below it would grow taller. But I still don’t understand the problem with that?? And I do have a tooth next to it with a large surface for chewing. I just had it pulled on October 16 so I don’t know what the comfort level will eventually be without an implant. My question is how important is it to have an implant on a tooth so far back and out of sight?

A. The problem is function and stability.  As teeth are lost the surrounding teeth can become unstable and move.  This can cause problems with teeth clashing when you eat that can break pieces off these teeth, gum problems can develop due to unstable contact points, your mouth can become less balanced overloading other teeth etc.  My recommendation would be to have the tooth replaced

Could tooth removal cause nerve damage?

Monday, October 26th, 2009
Q. I have an appointment to get a lone tooth extracted from my gum above my top front teeth. It showed up in an xray when I went to find out about braces. In order for me to get the braces my dentist told me i needed to get it removed. Is there a chance i will have nerve damage after this procedure? If so what will the effect be?

A. Hi many thanks for your email, on the position of the upper jaw the extraction should not cause nerve damage. hope this is helpful.
