A. Hi, many thanks for your email. the first thing that should be ascertained is how much bone you have generally i have found in my experiance that once a CT scan of the jaw bones is done, there is usally more bone in the jaws than you think. The next step once the true answer is known about how much bone you have is deciding on the the way the teeth are to be restored. th reason for the CT scan would be to see if you are a candidate for dental implants.

Preferribly four implant in each jaw would give you fixed teeth which would not require removing, the cost of which would be approx £12,000 per jaw.

Two implants per jaw fixed to a denture would be removable but when in very secure. the cost per jaw would be £5000

The alternative would be dentures which is what you already have, but with a better fitting surface and new teeth, these are not ideal, but cost wise may range from £1000 – £4000

There are many practices that offer interest free credit to help finance the treatment. hope this is helpful.

How would I make a claim on dentists fault?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Q. I had a root canal about 5 years ago, earlier this year I developed an infection in the gum above this tooth. Xrays show that the end of a metal tool was left in the gum. Is it possible that my dentist was not aware of this, as I think it unlikely. She never told me about it and I have been told that I must have the tooth extracted due to the infection. This dentist also broke off a drill bit under my sisters tooth, who had to go to the dental hospital to fix it so this is by no means a one off. Is this a regular thing that happens? Is there anyway, seeing as part of one of her tools would be missing, she would have not known about this to inform me. Another dentist has told me that I can take it further, is there a ‘offcom’ for dentists? And as I now face a large bill to sort this how would I go about trying to make a claim of she was at fault.

A. I would go back tothe original dentist to see if you can come to some arrangement regarding paying for the new treatment. You may need to take a copy of the x-ray to show the dentist what is going on. This is usually the easiest way to sort out a  dispute regarding treatment.

There are hairline cracks in the veneers and crowns on my teeth and the dentist says that it is due to grinding

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Q. I had veneers and crowns applied to the top 6 of my teeth 5 months ago. My two front teeth are actually crowns. I went in for a cleaning today and the dentist advised me that I have 2 hairline cracks. One on my front (crown) and one on a side veneer. He believes that I’m grinding my teeth at night and that is what caused this. I don’t think I grind my teeth at night. Isn’t it awfully early for me to be already getting cracks in the veneers/crowns? He is replacing both for free but does not know how well they will match the remaining 4 when complete and wants me to start wearing a mouthgard at night.

A. There is a huge misconception about grinding. Actually very few people grind thier teeth at night. If you do do then you have something called para function which meand the condition is habitual or you have a neurological disorder.
In both cases if this was the reason then your teeth probably would have exhibited signs of wear before the veneers were placed and you should have been advised of fracture of veneers before hand.
Also you would definately see some signs of wear on your back teeth. You may have muscle or joint problems. If you had none of these signs or symptoms then you are not a grinder. Without seeing you it is difficult to tell the cause of the wear but usually the reason for vertical fractures of anterior veneers is increased pressure on the teeth. Studies have shown that this is happens during chewing. The constant knocking of the lower teeth against the top teeth causes the bond to fail and this in turn causes the veneer to fracture because without the bond the veneer is extremely weak. This is all backed up by resaerch and studies. If your dentist places the new veneers in the same position as the old ones then the same thing will happen. It won’t make any difference if you wear a mouth guard or not.
Either your veneers were too long or they were locking your lower jaw back, or the palatal incline on them on them is too steep.
I hope this helps
Kind regards

my third tooth is twisted

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Q. Hi I was hoping you could give me an idea of what the best way of sorting out my smile would be and maybe a rough idea of how much it would cost. When i was younger my third tooth i think its called the canine grew twisted and closer to the front than it should have because of this my second tooth never grew so now i have one tooth in the middle of where two teeth should be with gaps on both sides. i don’t mind if my rogue tooth needed to be removed for the best results. But i would like to be able to smile properly as quickly and cheaply as possible as it is really beginning to get me down. Thank you in advance for your help & advice I look forward to hearing from you.

A.

Check out some dentists in your area that offer a free initial consultation, You should be able to get some rough prices for veneers, bridges, cosmetic bonding, or orthodontics (braces ) then balance the cost with the speed and the “smile” result.
Cheap & fast but ? result in your case would be cosmetic bonding.

I want to change all my front teeth to silver colour dental grills?

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Q. I want to change my canines and all my front teeth to silvery colour teeth, please can it be possible?

A. Hi S, many thanks for your enquiry, to change your front teeth to a silver colour is what i am understanding that you require.

There are two ways to achieve this. the first way is to have a clip on device called a grill made for your teeth which is made to the specification you require. This is removable and so if ever you don’t want silver teeth anymore is not a major problem.

The second option would be to veneer your front teeth but instead of the veneers being made out of porcelain would be constructed out of a silver alloy. This is possible and is a fixed option so if ever you decided you did not want silver teeth you would have to have the work removed and replaced with an alternative ie, porcelain veneers. To create the room for the silver veneers the teeth would need to be prepared so drilled.

Hope this information is what you require.
