Is it possible to have two partials to cover extracted tooth and the gap?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. I just recently had my front tooth extracted and am wearing a flipper until my gum heals. I had a natural gap between the tooth that was extracted and the next tooth, I am having a partial made, and was wondering if it is possible to have two partials made to cover the extracted tooth and the gap.

A. They should be able to deal with this with just one denture i guess.

Should I get my decayed molar teeth extracted now

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
Q. I am due to have my upper left molar extracted next month at the dental hospital under IV sedation. I was referred there by my dentist due to the tooth being too badly decayed underneath the filling to have root canal treatment on it. As it is causing me little or no pain at the moment I would like your advice as to whether I could wait until it does cause me pain and have it extracted then or would this just make things worse? Also, I am concerned about the gap it would leave behind and would like to know my options regarding this, as neither my dentist nor the dental hospital have discussed this with me. Thank You

A. Given that the tooth decay is bad, it will be getting worse over time. It is unlikely that you will be able to arrange, at short notice, extraction with sedation when the tooth starts to hurt. You need to have the tooth out at the time that is convenient to you not when you get toothache ( eg on your holiday etc )

Gaps can be filled with dentures, bridges & implants if the adjacent teeth are healthy. All need regular care & maintenance.

Im pregnant and I need to take my 6 adult teeth out advise please!

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
Q. Hi there im 19 yrs old and have been told i have to have 6 adult teeth out and im pregnant and cant have them taken out while awake im scared of pain what would you say i could do and also do you think my dentist will do something to replace the missing teeth.?

A. You won’t have a full anaesthetic if you’re pregnant so talk to your dentist to see if he can do something until after you have had your baby, then you might be able to have the teeth out under sedation.

Did my dentist have the right to extract my teeth without giving me the right options?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
Q. I wonder if you could give me some advise please.I had a bridge that had bercome loose, when i visited my dentist he said that i could not have it re-cemented as the two teeth anchoring the bridge had worn away and the only solution was to extract the two teeth and then he would replace with a new bridge. I went ahead and had the teeth surgically removed. when i returned for him to check the stitches he informed me that i could not have a bridge as the gap was too large and the only option was to have dentures or costly implants. I now have nasty plastic dentures that are very uncomfortable i have a constant lisp and find them very diffiucult to eat with. Did he have the right to extract my teeth without giving me options? the extractd teeth were fine, i had no decay, they had just worn down to the gum so the bridge could not adhere. After some research i found out that i could have had them posted and crowned. he did not give me that option. On my return visits he keeps trying to convince me to have implants, i cannot afford to go dow that route (£6000) I feel he is purely profiteering.|I am so upset as they are my near front teeth and used to have a perfect smile. I am devastated and constantly have to cover my mouth if i laugh or smile. do i complain to him? do i have any rights? can you confirm that i could have had crowns? please can you advise. Thankyou.

A. In these situations you need to voice your concerns to your dentist.  He will have a complaints procedure and should be able to explain to you the reasons for the steps that he has taken

I have 19 teeth left and all are problematic what do i do?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009
Q. I have 19 teeth left in my mouth!! They are all giving me a lot of problems, and I wake up crying due to the teeth pain!! I do not want to spend 800.00-1000.00 on each tooth. I want them all pulled and I want full dentures. How do I go about doing this?? What steps do I have to take?? Please help me!!!!

A. Get three opinions from different dentists, see where they agree and where they differ. Maybe you need stable dependable teeth without spending 800 per tooth and this is possible without extracting everything.

My canine was removed in childhood can i get it restored now?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
Q. As a child my dentist removed a single canine tooth. As a result the centre line of my top teeth is about 3-4mm off centre from my lips, resulting in one-sided appearance. Is it possible to restore the centre line using crowns or implants? Many thanks

A. Yes it is but is a quiet complex treatment and sometimes only partial improvement is possible. I would recommend the treatment is carried out by an experienced cosmetic dentist

I have bad rotten teeth what treatment do u suggest me?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
Q. Hi, I’m 28 years old and i have always had bad teeth and oral hygiene in general. The last time i visited a dentist was around 14 years ago. The teeth that didn’t have to be extracted had fillings so my mouth was already in quite a mess. Now it has got to the stage where at least 50% of my teeth have completly rotted away right down to the gum line and below. All i see now when i open my mouth is big black holes in my gums. The remaining teeth, mostly being the front visable ones have very bad cavities and are discusting to look at. Having done research online i am absolutly petrified of related health issues caused by bad oral hygeine. I’m so depressed right now i just dont know what to do, I have no friends, people think i am ignorent because i never smile and dont like to look at people when they speak to me incase they look at my teeth. I am jobless at the moment, i wanna go back to work but too worried about what the interviewer will think when he see’s my teeth. I really want friends and to socialise but im just so embarassed to go anywhere or speak to anyone. I currently recieve social security benefits so spending thousands of pounds to fix my teeth is not an option for me. I just don’t know what to do or where to turn, i just want to be able to smile and laugh without looking at the floor or putting my hand over my mouth. I have a partner of 8 years who keeps telling me to sort it but she just dosn’t understand why i carn’t face going to see a dentist. I carn’t even smile in front of my 3 children because im so scared of them seeing my bad teeth and asking questions about them, even my own kids think im ignorent and misrable. I’m quite sure i’m way past the help of a regular dentist because i don’t believe any of my teeth can be saved and its actually my gums that look pretty messed up now. Please help me turn my life around and smile again. Your help and advice is very much appreciated.

A. Hello, I’m sorry to hear of your predictament. I thin k you’re right, a regular dentist probably isn’t going to be able to help you at this stage. Perhaps you hould look into being treated a  dental hospital where treatment is free or subsidised and carried out under the supervision of a specialist?

I have 4 tooth removed nd braces fixed but my jaw looks misaligned?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
Q. Hello there,i was wondering if you could help me.When i was about 12 i had 4 larger teeth removed towards the back of my mouth.2 on the top and 2 on the bottom.I had these removed due to overcrowding.I then had fixed train track braces fitted on the top and bottom of my teeth.I had these fixed for about a year but i had them removed as i was getting constant headaches and we thought this might be causing the problem.Since having the teeth removed and the braces fitted my appearence has totally changed. My jaw is completely crooked which is totally noticeable, especially in photographs where i cannot stand to look at myself. My face itself has become alot longer and thinner and the the pallet in my mouth has caved in.Instead of being a nice u shape it is much more like a v shape and it feels as though i am biting on the side of my teeth. When i have seen my dentists they say that there is nothing wrong but this has being really bothering me for years and it is my crooked jaw that really upsets me and i am desperate to try and sort this out and have a straight face again. Please can you help me.Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.

A. If your problem is purely a tooth position issue a brace will sort out your issues.  However it sounds as though your jaw growth has been uneven over the years.  This is unlikely because of your tooth extractions.  If this is the case you may need surgery to reposition your upper and lower jaws possibly in combination with a fixed brace

My front teeth were decayed and extracted can i still have implants?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Hi. About 6 weeks ago, I got told by my dentist that my four front teeth were decaying, and he was replacing with a denture. But then 3 weeks latley i had two of my teeth: one side and front tooth knocked out (two of them were the decaying ones.) And i’ve had the other two taking and out, and I’ve got a denture now. But i find it weird to wear and I’ve got special needs aswell so it’s diffcult for me to get use too it, but I was wondering because I’ve got a denture now, could I still have Implants done? or is it to late to have them?

A. Yes you can still have implants provided the bone is healthy and enough exists to create a stable base for the final teeth. Ask your dentist for a referral to an implant clinic for a 2nd opinion if he doesn’t do them himself.

I have abscess above my 4 front teeth should i get them extracted?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. I am 28 and my dentist has just told me that after 2 x-rays that I have abcesses above my 4 top front teeth. He says at the moment the abcess appears to be draining into the mouth but will get worse in time. He says that it is unlikely the teeth can be saved and will need to come out and be replaced by a removable plate. The teeth cause me no problems at present. He says he can refer me to the hospital to see what they say if I want. Should I just accept my dentists reccommendation and have the teeth out now or wait until they cause me grief. Or should I ask to be referred to the hospital? Also I’d much rather have dental implants rather than a plate but he made no mention of this. Is this an option? Obviuosly I wouldn’t mind normally but having to have the top 4 front teeth out in a row is rather a shock.

A. It might be a good idea to get a second opinion if only for what to put in the space instead of a denture. However you might have to wait for quite a while for a Hospital appointment. If you are in my area I would be happy to take a look or ask your dentist for a referral to an implant clinic as it is often possible to remove the teeth and fit implants at the same time. Im going for extraction of a tooth what treatment will be suggested?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have asked my dentist to remove a tooth that is higher up in my gum, he has suggested once removed to have a cosmetic tooth put in its place and I asked then to have veneers but he suggested I have four to six of the front upper teeth crowned, will this make my teeth straight like a hollywood smile!!

A. Maybe – but usually to achieve a Hollywood Smile requires 8 to 10 teeth treated as your smile exposes this number of teeth

I have pain in my tooth and my dentist suggests me to remove it plz advice?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr Andrew Moore Recently I’ve had extremely hard pain on one of my front teeth so decided to pay a visit to my local dentist. After taking an x-ray he noticed my top tooth bone was eroding so told me he would have to remove the tooth the next time i visit. I’m thinking of leaving it and let nature take place and see if the tooth stays in place but if it gets bad to worse and have no choice and its left to the tooth being removed what would you advise me to do . Thank you. Kind Regards

A. I would advise you to follow your dentists advice

After an extraction i was fitted with a plate and still in pain?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Hi, i had a extraction recently and was fitted with a plate. that was about 6 days ago and im still in alot of pain, also the plate is very uncomforable and i keep getting very thirsty. Could you give me advice on make it the plate more comfortable, i dont like the poligrip so dont like to wear it! My dentist also said i wouldnt be able to get fitted for my crown until 6 months……can i ask him to do this sooner?

A. It seems like a long time to wear the denture but sometimes the bone can take that long to heal. Maybe ask your dentist to adjust the plate to make it more comfortable or to perhaps try a different temporary tooth such as an adhesive bridge.

My teeth are badly rotten can i get treated for implants at NHS?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Hi, I’m 22 years old and i have a big problem with my teeth, my teeth have always been weak but since I’ve had my two children they have gone really worse, the front of my teeth have badly rotten and are falling apart, I’m extremely embarrassed and scared to go to the dentist as I’ve had bad experiences with them, i have had some teeth out already at the back, i was just wondering if there is any way these teeth could be saved or if tooth implants are possible for me on the NHS as I’m only on benefits, thank you for taking the time to read my question

A. Hi I’m afraid implants won’t be availalbe on the NHS, you might need to ask your dentist if its possible to restore the teeth with crowns and bridges if at all possible.

My front teeth have tartar and im losing teeth what can i do?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009
Q. I have tartar on my front teeths on the gumline and I’m losing my teeth what will a specialist do?

A. If the teeth can be saved you might need extensive deep cleaning of the roots of the teeth, if the teeth are too loose to save you may have to consider removal and replacement.

I have had bone implant and my tooth is still loose?

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009
Q. Hello i have periodontal disease i already had the bone implant and its been about 5 month since and my tooth is still loose will it improve how long should it take before any results? and if it doesn’t work is their more i can do about my bone loss as far as tooth replacement if i was to lose it? i am only 26yr old and i don’t want to lose my teeth. Please any hope

A. There is always hope.  Obviously periodontal disease at 26 is quite young for the amount of bone loss necessary for a tooth to loosen.  You should discuss your concerns with your dentist and I would recommend that you be referred to a specialist periodontist.
