Q. hi i had a root canal a week ago and my dentist found 3 out the 4 nerves had died? 4 days after the root canal it started to really hurt (like under the tooth)i went back on day 7 he said it was mildly infected and he put me on amoxicllin. he said i should still come back the next day for the cerec which i did. my tooth is really sore. my question is how long providing the infection goes should i expect to eat on it because at the moment a bannana is even out of the question. many thanks
A. They may be a number of reasons of why your tooth is still sore, including your bite and a possible infection inside of the tooth. Please book in with oyur dentist to explore further.
Kind regards

Q. Hi i just got dentures about 3 weeks ago and they still hurt abit when i chew my food. Is that normal? and also i have a infection on the roof of my mouth my dentist gave me this medication called nystatin ointment to put inside my denture it doesn’t taste very good i gag everytime i use it. how long does the infection usually last for. Thanks
A. Nystatin treats fungal infections. In general fungal infections tend to require prolonged treatments.
If you are new to dentures a small ammonut of discomfort is normal, if this continues for more than 2 weeks I would return to your dentist for further assesment.

Q. Dear Dr Justin Glaister! I am writing to you, as my husband is suffering from terrible toothache for the last 2 weeks. He took so many painkillers by now, and still no help. His tooth is aching almost every day, or every second day. We both know, he should go to a dentist urgently, but sadly we can’t afford those high prices. He is on the NHS waiting list, but it is ever so long. Is it true, if he goes to the hospital for emergency treatment, he gets it for free? We come from Hungary, and waiting to go home at the summer, and sort it out there. But this pain is getting unberable for both of us. Is any advise you could give him? Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you.
A. Your husband can go to the emergency dental hospital

Q. Hello, I am thinking of undergoing cosmetic surgery but I want to get a rought estimate of the cost. I have many health problems which have affected my teeth. From a young age, I am on calcium replacement and because of this condition, from a young age, it has affected my teeth really badly. The surface of my teeth is really rigid, they are also chipped in places and look worn out. There is also discolouration and regardless of how many times i brush them and use mouthwash, it has not chhanged in appearance. My gums also tend to bleed a lot, during brushing.. What are the treatments that I woud hav to undergo, how much on average would they cost and how long would they last for? I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Regards..
A. The treatment suitable for your case would depend on the position of your teeth. If you teeth are relatively aligned, then Veneers could be the treatment for you. Veneers can change the shape, colour and size of your teeth and can also correct gappy and slightly crowded teeth.
If your teeth are very crowded then you may have to have some orthodontics beforehand.
Without seeing your mouth it is impossible for me to give you an accurate opinion. You are very welcome to book a consultation with me at my clinic Umbrella. For more info please see www.umbrellasmiles.com

Q. I had an infection in my impacted wisdom tooth lower left side. I have been give antibiotics for 7 days which I finished 5 days ago. When I rub my gum with my finger it still has the same unpleasant smell as before albeit milder. I was told to use Corsodyl on it which I am doing. I am almost 60 years old, there is no pain, but……….before taking the antibiotics I developed a swelling under my arm, the doctor said it was my gland but didn’t seem too worried and said “keep an eye on it”. Whilst taking the antibiotics the swelling reduced in size to about a third, but now I think it is getting a little larger although hard to tell. Could this swelling be connected to the tooth? The swelling is on the opposite side.
A. Yes it could be and you may have a dry socket requiring more antibiotics or a dressing

Q. I have been discussing having Zoom whitening with my dentist. I have a tooth needs crowning and several fillings to be redone after the whitening process. My teeth are very sensitive particularly a front tooth – the one to be capped. It snapped off and was ‘glued’ back temporarily. I apply sensodyne regularly. I have been recommended to take the full dose of Nurofen for the 7 days prior to the treatment. However on a daily basis I am taking Ramipril, Lipitor and Aspirin. I have read the leaflet in the Nurofen packet and it is my opinion that I shouldn’t take them with my medication. Not wanting to bother my doctor, I;m sure it would quite irritate him actually, I wonder if you could advise please. Thankyou in anticipation.
A. Hi, If you already take asprin it might be better for you to use an alternative painkiller such as paracetamol, however I would speak to your doctor first in case you have any other drug sensitivity’s.
You could also consider home whitening using dentist made trays, this tends to cause less sensitivity.
Thanks Andrew

Q. Hi I had a top canine tooth removed 1st december I still have pain from the area it was removed from I saw my dentist 4 days ago he says the socket has healed it looked a bit red but just keep using salt washes and it will heal in time can you tell me is this normal for it to take this long as the pain affects the lower part of my nose and really agrivates me i am using ambesol to help with the discomfort shall i continur=e with the salt washes and is there any thing else |I can use to speed it along how long do you thinks it will take to clear up many thanks ps shall i use my mouth wash or not till the red and swelling have gone thanks
A. It should be feeling better by now. Canine teeth are very large so can take longer to heal. If it is not better please go back to your dentist you may have an infection requiring antibiotics or you may need the area re cleaned.

Q. Dear Sir i am 24 years of age and have constant problems with my teeth due to beeing an ex addict i have been to a few dentists and none of them helped in any way i have no confidence left and i dont smile at all not even to my husband i cry all the time because of the state of my mouth and just want to find a way to sort this out i have been of drugs for 3 years but the effects are lasting can cosmetic dentistry help me and were would i go to find one and would it be to expensive i am at my wits end and i am constantly miserable and in pain please help Thank you for your time A
Dear Anne
A. At the moment I wish that I possessed the Magic wand that would guarantee to sort out your problems. Self esteem is important, your smile is a way of showing people how you feel. BUT the most beautiful smile I have seen, was when 6 year old lost his first baby front tooth, he was really proud and the smile suited the wearer. I am not suggesting that most people find a missing front tooth attractive on a 24 year old. Context and the smile to suit the person are more important than glow in the dark white exactly even & straight teeth.
I don’t know what the costs would be because it depends on what you have done, Private fillings 60-100 per tooth , Crowns or veneers 300-600 per tooth tooth straightening by orthodontics 2-4000, it can add up to significant sums .
An NHS treatment will not treat you for cosmetic reasons alone but sometimes your need for fillings/veneers / crowns/ dentures will be to solve a functional problem like sorting out your pain but will also end up improving appearance. Some people get NHS treatment free, the max charge is £194
If you do find a dentist and would like help with deciding on the treatment. Feel free contact me again .
Good Luck
Rob
