What can be done to restore the original teeth colour?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Q. My 10 year old son fell off his bike a nd broke his two front teeth. The dentist did a good job and thankfully his teeth haven’t turned black and died. Unfortuneatley the made up part of his teeth are a different shade from what was left and its pretty obvious. Is there any thing that can be done to make them look better.

A. Resurfacing the restoration may help but it depends whether your child will allow the dentist 30 mins of working time to achieve the best result

How can I get rid of white stains?

Monday, October 19th, 2009
Q. After two nights using NiteWhite ACP 22% I noticed white stains on my teeth. Should I continue with the whitening or will the white stains get even worse and more noticeable? How can I get rid of these white stains? Is it possible to get an even color now or are these white stains staying ? Can the dentist get rid of them ?

A. The white stains are areas of enamel that were white before you started treatment but at a level that was not noticable.  They become more pronounced during treatment but blend back in once bleaching is stopped

Is brushing the teeth after vomiting harmful?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Q. I had a person on an ed website ask if brushing your teeth after purging (vomiting) is harmfull to your teeth. Is it or is that a myth?

A. Yes it is harmful to your teeth. This is because with are bringing up acids when vomiting and if you brush your teeth straight after this, this is very abrasive to your teeth.

Could you plz advice on an estimated timeline for treatment

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr Glaister, I consulted your site in 2006 and was delighted with your speedy and informative response, therefore, now that I have saved enough money to pay for the dental work that I need, I hope you will be able to help me once again. I decided to send my qustions to yourself as i understand you have great experience with cosmetic surgery and feel my question slighlty steps over the line from required treatment to cosmic treatment. From the start I should say that during childhood and my early teenage years I neglected my teeth insofar as I didn’t brush them at all; I didn’t even go to the dentist until I was seventeen. Four years on from my first visit and I have finally found a dentist who actually seems like he wants to help rather than inform me that I should have looked after them when I was younger in a patronising yet cheerful tone as my previous dentist often did. I have been going there for around six months now and as such my check up is due. When I visit at the end of this month there are a few things I will be asking the dentist, but thought I would get your opinions first: One thing I noticed since I first started going to the dentist is that after I had received all the necessary treatment, a few weeks later I would need to go back to the dentist after experiencing tooth pain, only to find I need another filling, and also by the time my next check up was due, I needed a whole host of work. Even though I brush my teeth twice a day with Colgate total and use Cordosyl daily (as recommended by my dentist) my teeth still seem to be going from worse to worse every few months, or in some cases weeks, and have been for the last few years. To the stage where I am sure the next time I go I will be told I have gum disease as lately my breath has an unpleasant odour and one of my teeth has started to hurt; a pain that I can only describe as being inside the tooth, yet not part of the tooth but rather up inside the gum. This is the main factor that I am holding back from spending my life savings on private treatment, i.e. crowns/bridges. Insofar as I do not want to spend every penny I have if the teeth the crowns are fixed to will still be rotting away underneath and thus the crowns fall out and I have wasted my money and am left with small stumps for teeth and no money to fix the situation. So could you please advise me as to whether it is possible for the teeth to still rot away underneath the crowns? Or if, once treated the gum disease is likely to cause problems for the crowns/bridges? I understand that you obviously cannot comment on me specifically, and even if you could, would need to examine my mouth before answering, but I am asking, based on the information provided, i.e. teeth keep decaying and worsening even with proper care and attention, is it possible and if it is how likely, that the teeth and will rot away underneath and cause the crown to fall out. Could you also please advise; on an estimated timeline from the start to the finish of treatment, detailing what procedures are involved. I am looking to have sixteen teeth fixed and would greatly appreciate your advise, because as you can imagine with my current smile of autumnal colours I have no confidence and do not even want to go to job interviews or out with friends as my teeth become the focal point for everyone, and there is only so much abuse and embarrassment you can take. Even going to the dentist themselves has become a struggle as I feel as though everyone must be talking about me, as I am told I have the worst teeth he has seen in someone my age. Plus it has now become a practical decision, in that even eating is now becoming more of a challenge as hot and cold foods and drinks seem to aggravate different teeth on different days as and when they desire. If you think having crowns would be a bad idea as it is the likelihood that the teeth will indeed continue to decay underneath, is their anything you could advise as an alternative as I don’t really know what to do. I have a budget of £8000 and obviously cannot afford to have implants. Also, it is the upper and lower front four teeth on the left and the right that I want the work to be carried out on. Thank you for your help, I hope to hear from you soon.

A. Only a dentist that has assessed your mouth can answer questions in so much detail.
Please book in for a consultation with a cosmetic dentist and go from there.

Kind regards

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. Hie Doc. Wich is the best tooth paste i can use to whiten my teeth, they are not in a bad state, but i feel they need some whitening.I bought BLANX just two days ago and i wonder if it can do an good. Please help.

A. Whitening toothpastes have limited whitening effects the best way is too professionally whiten your teeth through your dentist.  Some whitening toothpastes can be abrasive and cause damage to your teeth.

Should I go for implants or bridges Plz suggest

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. I had an apisectomy roughly ten years ago and have 2 caps on my front teeth. However I have been told that the root is still infected and that I require another operation but there is not a high success rate. What other options are available to me? Should I go for implants or a bridge? I would like something that will last me for a longer time and look natural as my caps are very discoloured. Many thanks

A.

I recommend you book an appointment with an implantologist to see if this would be an option for you. I then would ask the dentist that recommended the further treatment for this tooth and ask him the prognosis and make an informed decision from there.

Is its possible to get back the original color for the discolored tooth?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. I got hit in the mouth and now my front tooth is turning a purplish color.is there anything that can be done to the tooth to get the original color back.

A. You need to see a dentist and have an x-ray taken of the tooth it is highly likely the tooth will need root canal treatment and then could be whitened or crowned.

I m 19 Can I replace front big teeth with small ones

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. Hi, my front two teeth are a lot bigger than the rest, making them look odd. I was recently thinking about having them removed and having smaller ones in place, but obviously i need to know about the options available. Please could you reply providing information on any treatments that would be suitable. I am 19 years old and i have had braces in the past which aligned my teeth, however the size of the front two ruins my smile. Thankyou Riten.

A. You really need to have a consultation to have your teeth assessed and measured.  You may be able to have the teeth reshaped but may need some orthodontics to close the spaces afterwards.  Sometimes the front teeth can be made smaller and the teeth next to them made a little wider to get a better smile.

Is the eroding of teeth due to reflux Plz advice

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. Hi i am wanting to ask my four front teeth seem to be eroding quite quickly i have suffered acid reflux but am now on medication and this seems to have calmed down do you think this is because of reflux that my teeth have gone like this? and if so is there any way to sort this out.Kind regards.

A. Reflux causes strong acids to break the teeth down you could have tooth coloured material or porcelain placed over the teeth to strengthen and protect them.

Is its possible to replace amalgam fillings?

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Q. Hi, I am 15 and have suffered from amelogenesis imperfecta my whole life. At the moment, all of my molars have stainless steel caps on them and most of my teeth are heavily restored with amalgam fillings. Apparently, these restorations were stronger when I was younger, but now I am getting bullied at school because it looks like I am chewing tin foil all the time! Is it possible to get these replaced with tooth coloured restorations and can this be done on the NHS?

A. It might be possible to get porcelain crowns on these teeth, ask your dentist to see what he might be able to do on the NHS for you.

What would be the rough estimated cost of cosmetic surgery?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q. Hello, I am thinking of undergoing cosmetic surgery but I want to get a rought estimate of the cost. I have many health problems which have affected my teeth. From a young age, I am on calcium replacement and because of this condition, from a young age, it has affected my teeth really badly. The surface of my teeth is really rigid, they are also chipped in places and look worn out. There is also discolouration and regardless of how many times i brush them and use mouthwash, it has not chhanged in appearance. My gums also tend to bleed a lot, during brushing.. What are the treatments that I woud hav to undergo, how much on average would they cost and how long would they last for? I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Regards..

A. The treatment suitable for your case would depend on the position of your teeth. If you teeth are relatively aligned, then Veneers could be the treatment for you. Veneers can change the shape, colour and size of your teeth and can also correct gappy and slightly crowded teeth.
If your teeth are very crowded then you may have to have some orthodontics beforehand.
Without seeing your mouth it is impossible for me to give you an accurate opinion. You are very welcome to book a consultation with me at my clinic Umbrella. For more info please see www.umbrellasmiles.com

Will the tooth whitening kit gives guaranteed results?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. I am interested in having my teeth whitened. would you recommend that I should see my local dentist or use your whitening kit. Are results guaranteed? What if I am not completely satisfied do you have a money back guarantee?

A.

No dentist will give you a money back guarantee on tooth whitening as your teeth are the limiting factor, not the product. Everybody achieves different results, some people jump 10 shades, some only 2 It is impossible to tell you what result you will achieve pre treatment. /you just have to try it. Tooth whitening is the least invasive way to achieve a whiter smile.

What are the best possible treatments for yellow teeth?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. I have quite yellow teeth, always have since a child. I have recently had bone grafts in both upper and lower jaw due to peridontal disease.Which i am told has been stopped. Now i need 4 crowns.I would like whiter teeth before the new crowns are made. The dentist told me that as i smoke the results will only last a few months?.So i may have to opt for two veneers on the canine teeth, which are the darkest teeth. I live in Cyprus ,so a UK visit is not an option with dental costs involved. What do you think about whitening as opposed to the 2 veneers. Do you have any contact info of a clinic that uses the enlighten system in Cyprus. For over 30 years all i ever wanted was a nice smile, now im confused and wary!!!Please help.

A. I would rather you tried whitening you can always have veneers later. I use the enlighten system and think its the best you could try contacting the enlighten company directly to find a dentist.

My wifes teeth are turning grey please advice?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009
Q. My wifes teeth are turning grey. She doesnt know why and is scared. Her dentist doesnt have a good answer. Can you help ?? Thanks

A. There are many reasons why your wifes teeth may be discolouring. Teeth tend to go darker over time as you get older and it may be that she has just started to notice this. Howver, without seeing her mouth I would be unable to give you an acurate opinion.
Please book an appointment to see a cosmetic dentist.
