I have bad rotten teeth what treatment do u suggest me?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
Q. Hi, I’m 28 years old and i have always had bad teeth and oral hygiene in general. The last time i visited a dentist was around 14 years ago. The teeth that didn’t have to be extracted had fillings so my mouth was already in quite a mess. Now it has got to the stage where at least 50% of my teeth have completly rotted away right down to the gum line and below. All i see now when i open my mouth is big black holes in my gums. The remaining teeth, mostly being the front visable ones have very bad cavities and are discusting to look at. Having done research online i am absolutly petrified of related health issues caused by bad oral hygeine. I’m so depressed right now i just dont know what to do, I have no friends, people think i am ignorent because i never smile and dont like to look at people when they speak to me incase they look at my teeth. I am jobless at the moment, i wanna go back to work but too worried about what the interviewer will think when he see’s my teeth. I really want friends and to socialise but im just so embarassed to go anywhere or speak to anyone. I currently recieve social security benefits so spending thousands of pounds to fix my teeth is not an option for me. I just don’t know what to do or where to turn, i just want to be able to smile and laugh without looking at the floor or putting my hand over my mouth. I have a partner of 8 years who keeps telling me to sort it but she just dosn’t understand why i carn’t face going to see a dentist. I carn’t even smile in front of my 3 children because im so scared of them seeing my bad teeth and asking questions about them, even my own kids think im ignorent and misrable. I’m quite sure i’m way past the help of a regular dentist because i don’t believe any of my teeth can be saved and its actually my gums that look pretty messed up now. Please help me turn my life around and smile again. Your help and advice is very much appreciated.

A. Hello, I’m sorry to hear of your predictament. I thin k you’re right, a regular dentist probably isn’t going to be able to help you at this stage. Perhaps you hould look into being treated a  dental hospital where treatment is free or subsidised and carried out under the supervision of a specialist?

I have broken and decayed teeth but i fear dentists plz advice?

Monday, September 14th, 2009
Q. I am 47 years old and have not been to a dentist for 27 years after a quite terryfying experience. I have lost alot of teeth and apart from a few at the front bottom and top the others remaining are broken or decaying. I am scared stiff of the dentist and get panicky just thinking about it. Could you give me some idea of how I will accepted if I go. I do not want to be lectured as i am well aware of my situation. What I need is a sympathic and calming approach but I am really scred this may not be the case.

A. When I see patients such as yourself I am certainly not judgmental but concerned about treating your mouth back to health.  For patients who are scared of dentistry there are a number of ways to help you through the process.  In my experience most patients who are as scared as you find IV sedation a great help.  They find that this technique makes them very relaxed during the treatment and also they have little memory of the event.  This also allows me to carry out the best treatment possible.  If this is of interest to you please contact my practice for an appointment.  i look forward to meting you.

Im going for extraction of a tooth what treatment will be suggested?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have asked my dentist to remove a tooth that is higher up in my gum, he has suggested once removed to have a cosmetic tooth put in its place and I asked then to have veneers but he suggested I have four to six of the front upper teeth crowned, will this make my teeth straight like a hollywood smile!!

A. Maybe – but usually to achieve a Hollywood Smile requires 8 to 10 teeth treated as your smile exposes this number of teeth

Im experiencing pain in my teeth can u plz help?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q. Hello, I have just been to my dentist as I was experiencing pain in my lower back teeth. I had an x-ray done and was told that my lower back teeth were fine but that I have alot of decay in my top canine tooth and that it will need fixing immediatly. She then poked and blew air into it asking me if it hurt which it didn’t and then said I would need the tooth sorting but said that it would be extremley difficult. I asked if she meant if I was going to lose the tooth or need a root canal and she said no nothing like that, she would just need to do a normal type filling but just that it was going to be very difficult. I am now scared and don’t understand. Please could you explain this to me a little more? What happens during a filling of you canine tooth and why would it be so difficult? Please please help!!!

A. I am not sure what your dentist meant either – you need to go back to her and ask her specifically what she means

Do crowns wear on the inside over time?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q. I have 4 crowns in the front (top) I just noticed as I was flossing today the area I thought had food seems to be more like a wearing of the side of the crowns (2). Does this happen and what do you do about it besides new crowns. I know–go to the dentist. I have had them approximately 17-20 years. Thank you

A. Crowns do not wear on their side- you probably have decay and need new crowns

Will fizzy drinks erode enamel and effect the Whitening process?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Q. I have been given a kit called ‘day white excel 3’ from my dentist in Australia. I used the kit last week for 9 days straight and was meant to leave it on for half an hour, but sometimes left it for over an hour. I had very sensitive teeth afterwards and felt that diet coke or anything acidic afterwards was attacking my teeth. It looks like some enamel may have been eroded the root s of some of my teeth, is this possible or could the whitening highlight a problem that may already be there? In addition do fizzy drinks and sparkling water erode the enamel on teeth over time? Thanks in advance.

A. During bleaching and for 2 weeks afterwards you should stay away from fizzy drinks and staining foods/drinks.  Home bleaching kits will not cause erosion of your teeth provided they are prescribed by a dentist and are carbamide peroxide based.

A. Dentists deal with people with poor dental health every day and shouldn’t make you feel bad regarding your problems. Ask a friend for a recommendation for a dentist in your area

One of my support teeth is decayed can a screw support be used instead

Monday, August 17th, 2009
Q. Dear Sir.I have a bridge of 7 teeth, including 2 support teeth. One of the support teeth is decaying and about to go.Can a screw support be used for the one thats going or will it mean dentures .

A. It is possible to use implants or join an implant to the existing teeth to create a bridge for fixed teeth. Unfortunatley in most cases you will nee a new bridge made as the old one can’t be modified to accept the new implant.

Ive at least 9 teeth that need pulling out and a hairline fracture in my jaw How can i fix it?

Monday, July 27th, 2009
Q. Hi there. I am 20 years of age and have atleast 9 teeth that need pulling out as they have broke, due to smoking, and not brushing my teeth as a kid. A few years ago i go attacked and suffered a hair line frature in my jaw, since then my jaw has not felt right, it clicks and cracks. I have never been to a dentist and currently just left college so really i have no way of paying £k’s for treatment, my confidence is low and feel like i cannot speak due to the state of my teeth. I hope oyu can help me as i seriously feel so low and feel like crying..! Many thanks… !

A. Did you ever see anybody about your jaw fracture? Ideally, you need to see somebody who can assess your injuries and see what side affects you have suffered with. Jaw problems can be very uncomfortable and can take a long time to correct.
Teeth break down usually through decay- decay is caused by eating an drinking sugary foods between your meals- and of course not brushing. You will need to see a dentist to discss what treatment you will need to achieve dental fitness. After then, I strongly advise that you start to look after your teeth and yourself. Smoking is one of the major factors of gum disease- and can also increase the risks of oral cancer. As you are only 20, you have time to turn yourself around and think of the future. Once you lose your teeth, they don’t re-grow! There are options for replacing teeth like dental implants, but this can be quite costly. in short, prevention is better than cure.
Good luck.

My upper back teeth at the right side have a hole which looks black in my gums what do i do

Saturday, July 25th, 2009
Q. My gums have always been red and I’ve found it difficult to remove plaque so when I go to the dentist it is always being taken off. However recently I have had very painful gums and teeth in different areas of my mouth, and self diagnosed myself with gingivitus. Today I felt a pain in my upper back teeth at the right side and had to have a look, I have a hole which looks black in my gum, I’m certain I already have both top wisdom teeth, what could be the problem? I am terrified of the dentist but scared to death that my teeth will get worse. Please help.

A. I’m not really sure what this could be. I recommend you go to your dentist next week to get it checked out.
Regards Andrew

I had a deep filling about a month ago but still now ive pain what could be the problem

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009
Q. About a month ago I had a deep filling,,well it was painful to chew on that side until my dentist shaved a little off one of my teeth that was going into it when i chewed,,well now i have jaw pain, the dentis x rayed it and said there was no decay and didnt see any nerves that could be causing me problems,so he perscribed an antibiotic i have been taking for 7 days,,i still have pain and have to take motrin every 4 hrs,,what could be the problem

A. In order to diagnose this correctly you could get a referral to an endodontist – to see if the tooth needs a root canal due to the deep decay that required filling.

If not then a nightguard maybe prudent to prevent you placing too much pressure on the tooth

NHS dentist told me to have a small filling but the private dentist said it is not a good idea advice

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009
Q. A NHS dentist at a previous check up recommended that I have small fillings put in 4 of my bottom front teeth to stop them chipping further. However, I have dental insurance with a private dentist from whom I have had rout canal treatment carried out on other teeth and he advised me that this would not be a good idea. My teeth are not painful and the chips are not very noticable. I am slao in my fifties.

A. It is very difficult to give you an answer to this when two different dentists disagree and I have not had the opportunity to see your teeth.
I would advise another opinion or go with the dentist you feel more comfortable with

Ive 2 upper teeth that are rotten to the gum line i am scared will i die from this condition?

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009
Q. Hello. i have 2 upper teeth that are rotten to the gumline. although they do hurt, i am scared of what can happen. will i die from this condition??

A. Infections can cause serious pain are very rarely life threatening, the secret is to not wait until you get severe pain, go see a dentist you may have to have the teeth removed but at least that will get rid of the infection you can then look at cosmetic options to improve your smile.

Is it possible for a right handed person to suffer with tooth decay on the right side of the mouth

Friday, July 17th, 2009
Q. How do teeth decay? is it possible for a right handed person to suffer with tooth decay on their right side of the mouth as a result of it being easier to brush their left side of the mouth? and vice versa for left handed persons.

A. Yes but diet is more important, teeth only decay if you have too much sugar in your diet
