I have receeding gums, can anything be done to correct this?

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
Q. I now have the “Old-fashioned ectremely expensive complete top veneers – the type that they had to grind down all of my teeth. This was recommended because I had gum disease which was supposedly cured after surgery. Now, I have receeding gums – just one tooth at the top that shows my own tooth and the space between! It looks awful! Can anything be done to correct this?

A. Please consult a periodontist to see if a gum graft would be possible.
Kind regards

What procedure is fine scale

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Q. What procedure is fine scale? If the dentist says your coming back for fine scale. Will it hurt?

A. It is a cleaning and it is not painful, may be a bit sensitive depending on the health of your gums.

Gum infection problems even after brushing

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009
Q. Hi there…im a 23 year old,and have many propblems with my teeth, ive been 2 the dentists many of times, and the visits have resulted in me having gum infections everytime,i brush my teeth 2-3 times a day,and im always using special mouthwashs and they just dont seem to be getting any better, they look like there on there way out,im now starting to loss confindence in myself,i fill like i cant talk to people etc im on benefits and wondered if i could get help in anyway with getting them sorted..via the nhs??? many thanks…

A. Many thanks for your e-mail, usually when a patient is having continual problems with gum infections their dentist will recommend that they see a dental hygienist. In the beginning the visits may be quite regular, and on improvement of the condition the hygienist may recommend regular visits although with slightly less frequency. You can find your local NHS dentist by visiting NHS Direct or by contacting your local Primary Care Trust. I recommend that you visit a dental professional at your earliest convenience. Many Thanks.

Im getting continual foul taste coming from the inside gum margin please advice?

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009
Q. Dear Dr Moore I have a bridge (1 missing tooth upper jaw the 1st molar), placed in 2003. I did not have root canal treatment to any teeth prior to placement. It is porcelain and i assume bonded to metal. When I first had it fitted I noticed little bits of cement in my mouth. I had it fitted whilst I was working in the Cz Republic and therefore I was not able to return for a check-up. I had severe pain for a while and then extreme sensitivity for 3/4/5 years or so. Sensitivity has stopped now, but I get occassional problems. But the main problem has been a continual foul taste coming from the inside gum margin with the back crown. I have visited my UK dentist several times, who assures me the crown/bridge is OK, I had x-rays etc. I did also see another dentist who also took an X-ray and said all was fine and said I had some ’slight’ gum disease and was advised to use dental brushes and mouthwash – which i do with little effect. I can pull the back crown ‘up and down’ a little, which would suggest to me it is slightly lose, perhaps indicated by the little bits of cement when it was first placed, although my dentist said the bridge is fine. Also if I run my finger along the gum margin it does ’stink’ and my mouth tastes foul at times.. My boyfriend also says my breath ’stinks’ which I am sure it does and he has a bad sense of smell. I am assuming my options are to have the bridge removed but I a concerened the ‘posts’ of the crown tooth may come away or some other problem. I have now decided I need to do something, as 6 years of bad breath is no good. Unfortunately 2 dentists have told me nothing is wrong and are reluctant to do anything. Your advice would be greatley appreciated. My apologies for the ramble. Kind regards

A. I would remove the bridge beacuse it shouldn’t move up and down at all. I would take an educated guess and suggest that one of the anchor teeth hs decayed and may need removing or root canal treatment prior to a new bridge being made. It might be worth seeing a private dentist for a final opinion on the bridge.

My old crown gave me a blackline can i replace them with veneers?

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009
Q. Hi, i am considering having veneers to the the upper front jaw. i have spoken to my dentost and he said that i would only need the first four done. I am really nervous about getting it doen but it’s something that i really want done. i hate my smile and am very concious when i smile. I had a bad experience with my last dentist as a teenager and as a result of poor comunication i have been left with a crown on my front tooth. it stands out to the other teeth and there is a black line along my gum where you can see the join. Is there something i can do about this and also if i had veneers would they all develop this line in time? Please help?

A. This crown could be replaced with an all porcelain crown to eliminate the black line. The veneers are just made of porcelain so you shouldn’t have the same problem as the existing crown.

Can u advice me on swelling and the pertaining infection?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
Q. Thank you for your swift reply to my enquiry regarding a swelling under my arm after an infected wisdom tooth. You said that the swelling could be related to the infection or I may have a dry socket. I have read a few websites and as I understand it dry sockets occur after the wisdom tooth has been removed – I have not had any surgery to remove my tooth just antibiotics for the infection, so could the swelling still be related?

A. Yes it could – we call it pericoronitits which is infection of the gum over the partially erupted wisdom tooth.  This  can be very painful and it is not unusual for the patient to have a swollen face from this seemingly minor infection

What kind of bridge is best suited to allow the gum to heal properly?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
Q. Hi,i had a bridge fitted on my front teeth as my crown fell out and root snapped. My dentist fitted bridge last October but feels really bad and i cannot get used to it,my dentist also advised would take my gum 5-6 months to stop healing before he could do anything with this, can you please advise will my dentist be able to rectify this and make it look better.

A. In these situations I will place a temporary bridge to allow the gum to heal properly and form a nice shape to accept the bridge.  This is then changed to a permanent bridge after about 6 months – this will feel smooth and comfortable in comparison to the temporary bridge which is basically made out of plastic

Are dentures very realistic to the teeth?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009
Q. HI, 2 YEARS AGO I HAD TO HAVE SOME BOTTOM FRONT TEETH REMOVED DUE TO GUM DISEASE. I HAD THEM REPLACED WITH DENTURES. I HAVE ALSO LOST MOST OF MY GUM AT THE BOTTOM. THE DENTURES ARE NOW QUITE LOOSE AND AS THEY HAVE SETTLED MY TEETH AT EITHER SIDE OF THEM ARE NOW HIGHER, WHICH MAKES ME FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE. MY DENTURES DO NOT HAVE ANY GUM UNDER THE TEETH WHICH MAKES THEM LOOK LIKE FANGS. COULD YOU PLEASE ADVISE ME AS TO WHETHER A DENTIST CAN MAKE FALSE GUM DENTURES WHICH WOULD NOT MAKE MY DISAPPEARING GUM SO VISIBLE WHEN I TALK OR SMILE? I HAD MY TEETH DONE WITH A PRIVATE DENTIST BECAUSE AT THE TIME I HAD THE SPARE MONEY AND I HAD LOST TWO TEETH AT THE FRONT WHICH NEEDED ATTENTION VERY QUICKLY. I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR REPLY, REGARDS,

A. Dentures can be made to look very realistic, replacing not only the teeth but the underlying gum as well.  I suspect you had your denture placed immediately after the removal of your teeth.  A new denture should solve your concerns

Can u suggest me on my jaw that has become sensitive to hot food?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009
Q. Hi DR moore I have a crown on the upper right jaw that has become sensitive to hot food etc The pain is only mild, and seems to radiate to other teeth on that top side. There is no pain when i bite on the tooth, also there is no swelling around the tooth. what could be the problem. thanks for your time.

A. There is a chance the tooth could be dying. It would be worth getting it checked over as pain with hot is a symptom of a dead or infected tooth.

My dentist said they can not do anything to my cracked tooth until swelling goes down advice

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
Q. Hello,  i got an infection on my right lower molar i belive because the molar is cracked to the root. now ive been to the emergancy room and they just prescibed me antibiotics and pain medication, i spoke with many dentists and they tell me they can not do anything untill the swelling goes down. now the swelling looks like i have a 4″ jawbreaker in my cheek. should i just have the molar removed. should i see the dentist now or wait untill the infection is gone. i dont want to pay if all the dentist is going to say is wait untill the infection goes away?

A. The reason that the dentist is telling you to let the swelling go down, is because it is very difficult to become fully aneasthetised when an infection is present to have a tooth extracted. You would be in excrutiating pain otherwise. Trust the dentist and wait for the swelling to go down. The infection won’t go away, but the symptoms will ease temporarily. Hope this helps.

My partner has a tooth ache and his whole face is swelled up what can the dentist do?

Monday, June 1st, 2009
Q. Hi, My partner had crowns fitted to his teeth. Two years ago one came loose and he had to have it refitted. He has never had any problems at all, until now. He is really over the top with his cleaning and looks after his teeth very well (better than me. On Sunday he devekoped a tooth ache. On tuesday he went to his dentist who took an e-ray but he said he couldn’t find where the problem was. He gave him some Amoxicillin and said to take nurofen. He was in a lot of pain so I took him to the doctors on Wednesday she prescribed a painkiller. On Thursday we went back to the dentist as his whole face swelled up. The dentist gave him Metronidazole. Today Sunday he is still in absolute agaony, the swelling is still there and he cann’t open his eye. The painkillers don’t do anything and it has not improved he has a very high temperature. I am going to take him to the doctors again. The Dentist has said to come back in two weeks…… why is he taking so long to treat it? and what can he do? thanks so much

A. It sounds like he has a large abscess (infection).  Please go back to your dentist right away explain that he has a swelling he needs immediate treatment.

Injection from dentist caused bruising swelling and loss of feeling

Saturday, April 4th, 2009
Q. Hello Mr. Moore, Oct.08 I was given 3%Citanest dental with Octapressin. This is the injection that appears to have caused me severe bruising swelling and loss of feeling in my left jaw after partially removing a nerve.Discussions with my GP resulted in speculation that it had entered the blood stream. Thanks for listening.

A. Hi. There can sometimes be transient numbness after an injection for a lower tooth caused usually by bruising. I suggest you go back to your dentist and ask him to examine you to ascertain the cause of the problem

I have problems with my gums since getting crowns a year ago

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
Q. Hi, few years ago I had 8 porcelain crowns, since then I’ve been having problems with my gums.Specially above tooth num.1 its always red and inflated.I tried different toothbrushes, mouthwashes, gels…nothing helps.Could you tell me what should I do?

A. You need to go and see your dentist and see if the crowns and teeth are healthy.  There are a number of possible reasons it could be plaque build up, there could be a ledge on the crown causing build up or it could be due to the bone under the gum.

My gums at the back of my wisdom teeth have developed into small lumps and has become very painful

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q. Hi, my gums have started to overlap one of my back wisdom teeth. Over the week it has developed into small lumps, both red and white. Since this has happened its become very painful. The rest of my mouth is fine. However my gums do bleed when I brush my teeth. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

A. Hi: This is quite common with a wisdom tooth, I would brush Corsodyl gel into the gum to help reduce any infection and seek advice from your dentist regarding the long-term treatment of the wisdom tooth and the rst of the gums

I have had 2 gold caps in the past 2 years, & the gums tend to swell up from time to time

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q. I have had 2 gold caps in the past 2 years, & the gums tend to swell up from time to time, so badly that I have to use adcortyl cream , the Dentist i go to is private , but is so busy it is hard to get an appointment. I want more work done on both sides of my back teeth , but am worried whatever i have done will result in the gums doing the same thing.

A. Some people are sensitive to metals usually you would notice with watches / rings / belt buckles etc. It might be problem with the marginal seal. Either or both problems can be solved by replacing with all ceramoic crowns such as procera, a guide price is 5-800 per procera crown.

If you would like a free initial consultation at our practice we can discuss this and other options that might suit your situation

Hi am a 30yr old mum of 2 and have dentures and a bridge am not quite sure why as am not a drug user and brush my teeth twice daily but over the yrs my dentist has pulled them out i have no teeth on the top right side of my gum then 4 teeth including my 2 front ones then a missing tooth then the left side is a bridge i have the denture for the top right side missing teeth and the on in the front my bridge is really tight and all my gums are swollen as i cant get there to floss i went to the hyginestand he tried to get in there but it was so painfull i screamed and asked him to leave them alone as am so young am so upset i never take my dentures out not even at night i jus brush them and put them back in as am so embarressed and dont want my fiance to see me with no teeth due to this fact the roof of my mouth is so tender and sore am getting married in oct and would love a lovely smile i jus dont know who to turn to as i dont like my current dentist would i have to go to a privite dentist and are implants and option if so would i need an implant for every missing tooth or is there a cheaper alternitive thankyou and look forward to your reply

A.

A smaller number of implants can support a larger number of teeth. An example is the “all on four” implants  by Nobel Biocare. It means two implants in each corner supporting around ten teeth in one arch that has no teeth. There are are many variations using the implants to support a bridge. Suitability depends on he quality, health, location  and ammount of bone for the implants to be sited.
You need to get the bridge sorted before any implant treatment because the current infection will cause problems for the implant. To sort the infection you need to find a way to keep it clean.
There is a lot of possibilities and the cost will vary a lot depending on choices avaialable after a clinical examination with an implant dentist.

I have broken teeth swollen gums and very bad breath

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q. Hi Don’t know if you can help me but I literally am at my very last resort I am 27 and since having a really bad experience as a child my teeth are ok to look at but I have broken teeth my gums are bright red and all lumpy, if I tilt my head down I can see down my gums. I have terrible BAD BREATH which has caused me a lot of personal problems my partner and father of my daughter has left, I stopped going out with friends I have completely shut myself off from everyone I cant speak to customers face to face at work due to the smell I am becoming very lonely and stuck. I honestly and genuinely have bad thoughts of not living I cant see a way out I have been my dentist it took me all my time getting there as I am so scared. I am desperate for some one to help me as my 6 year old daughter dosent like to give me a kiss which breaks my heart I am single but wont meet anyone with a mouth like this. My family make nasty comments about my breath and teeth. Even standing in sopping lines and someone talks to me I have to pretend I haven’t heard them and I am very friendly and feel awful for doing this. I am so worried about this as I can not afford dental plans although I work I am also a single parent I just cant do it and I don’t know what to do I am so scared at the fact I think of worse things to solve this problem can someone help me please. Many Thanks

A. Hi , listen sometimes things are not as bad as they seem, firstly it sounds as if because you have neglected your gums, you have lots of plaque and calculus fermenting around the gums causing the bad smell, the gum condition and hence the bad breathe can be dealt with very easily by seeing a hygienist on maybe a few occasions and improve your oral hygiene rountine at home, the cost of this treatment dependant on where you go should be no more than a couple of hundred pounds.

as for the rest of the teeth, once the bad breath and gums are sorted out a good dentist will advise you of the options available to improve your teeth and with relevent budgets. there is also interest free credit so if you do have a monthly budget in mind lets say £100 then the dentist may be able to work to your monthly budget. if you email back with where you live i would be if i can happy to recommend a local dentist for you.
