Q. My question is about my lower teeth, 4 to 5 of them are overcrowded but also some are kind of chipped but do not have a hole in them. Is there a way to get them to line up in every way?
A. You could have the teeth straightened and then have the chipped teeth re built. You need to have a consultation to see what options are available.

Q. I am 25 now, my top five teeth are quite big and crooked at the front. I want to make them look straighter. Is six month braces treatment is available in india?
A. I do not know you will need to research the internet to find a provider or look at the 6 month smile website.

Q. Hi, i’ve always wanted to have my teeth straightend but was too expensive for my liking. So my question is, i only want to fix 2-3 of my front teeths, how much will this cost? – the others – i’m very happy with them.
A. It depends on the existing position of these teeth. It may be that you have to straighten all of the teeth in order to make space for these the front teeth. Please seek an orthodontist for his opinion.

Q. Hiya, I’m 14 and have just been advised to get braces
. I have a huge overbite due to sucking my thumb at an early age and I really hate it. I’m really interested in getting my teeth straightened, have deneers and having my teeth whitened. Will I be able to get this treatment at my age and how much will it cost? Thanks.
A. At your age you can have braces on the NHS at no cost, however this does depends on your case but it sounds like you may be a candidate.
Veneers are not recommended at your age. I think you will find that once your teeth are straightened you will not need veneers. If you would like to whiten your teeth i advise you wait till you are 18.

Q. My 2 front teeth on top are slightly uneven. One of them is straight on the bottom, and the other is slightly curved and hangs just a little bit lower. Can the one that is curved be filed down to match the one next to it so that they are both straight?
A. You can trim teeth but only by a small amount otherwise they become weak and sensitive

Q. My two front teeth are longer then the others. I would like to get them filed a little to get them straight. Will it hurt? how long does the pain usually last after getting it done? and will it affect me long term?
A.
Your two upper central teeth are meant to be more dominant than the rest of your teeth. If you have a look a my portfolio- www.umbrellasmiles.com you will see examples of this. It allows the teeth to follow the curve of your lip giving a beautiful smile.
If you really dislike this then you may be able to have them recontoured slightly. This would not be a painful procedure but once you have the length taken away, you cannot have it back so make sure it is something you are sure about before commencing with any treatment.

Q. Hi i’ve had crooked teeth for a long time. When i was a teenager my parents couldn’t afford to get me braces, back then i didnt mind the way my teeth were i guess because i was so young i didnt care, but now i do not like smiling because my left front tooth sticks out ( i have an overjet) and its really unattractive. i am 21 years old now and i want to get them fixed but in a way scared because 3 years ago i went to an orthodontist and he told me i need 4 teeth extracted because i have severe crowding, over jet, and an over bite. i was actually hoping i would be a candidate for invislign but i wasnt. so here i am 3 years later and i want to get them fixed so bad. i just do not want to get teeth extracted. Now my question is when that orthodoctist said all that to me 3 years ago. Do you think i can be able to fix my teeth with out getting any teeth pulled out? and i just read about the 6 month smile, do you think i will be a candidate for that?.
A. Some orthodontists favour the approach of expanding the arch rather than extraction. You will need to ring around orthodontists in your area to find out what their views are.

Q. Hello, I have a slight underbite & I am 14. I am very, very self consisous about it & really want surgery to correct it. Would the orthodontis allow me to have it corrected at 14?
A. If your bite is how I imagine it to be, it is very unlikely that your Orthodontist would recommend surgery until you are at least 18-19 yeras old as the jaw continues to grow until that age.

Q. hi i have been diagnosed with tmj…sometimes the disc goes out and my jaw is swolen and sore..could this be affecting the nerves to my face and tongue in particular?i get sore neck and shoulders and sometimes my sinus is sore….also my tongue sometimes feels as though i have burnt it on hot liquid..i am female aged 54 and mennopausal thanks
A. Temperomandibular joint pain can be caused by pain originating from the muscles you use to chew with a problem with the position of the disc and/or a problem with the joint itself. Referred pain is possible with all pain. The usual treatment is a splint to see if a splint will help to relieve your pain- an MRI scan can sometimes be useful to assess the jaw joint.

Q. Dear Dr.Caplan I had braces at 26 and removed them 18 months later with excellent results. However, 10 years later, I now find a slight upper jaw protrusion. I did not continue using the retainer as long as I should have, could this be related? Can this now be treated without braces? I’m now 38. Thank you
A. It will be because of lack of retention time. These cases can usually be treated using clear aligners such as invisalign. Get treatment as soon as you can to reduce the amount of treatment that is necessary.

Q. Hello! So here’s the deal: I am getting my braces off in about 2years,and I already have stains. I need to get them off like pronto before my mom notices. And I don’t have time to go see a specialist without her knowing. And I only have like $30. What should I use to get rid of them?
A. Book a hygiene visit at your local NHS dentist it will be free or low cost.

Q. hi, im 23 and looking into getting my teeth straightened. on my top row its the 4 middle ones that are the problem. the middle 2 are quite big and the 2 either side of them have twisted at an angle outwards so my smile just looks awful! is there a way other than wearing braces that this can be fixed so that my middle 2 teeth arnt as big and the other 2 are twited back round to the right position?
A. I’m afraid it sounds like braces will be the best option. There are invisable braces available such as Invisalign that might be a more acceptable treatment than fixed braces.

Q. I was wondering about ‘Invisalign‘. I have a pretty bad overcrowding problem. My top two front teeth are slightly squint and one overlaps the other. The same can be said for the teeth directly on either side of these two. My wisdom teeth haven’t grown in yet, and I worry that I’ll have problems with that because I can barely feel any room
for them at all. Anyway, I was wondering if Invisalign could fix this problem with overlapping. I’m nineteen and I don’t want to have to wear a mouth full of metal. I love smiling, but I feel self-concious about how uneven my teeth are. Do you have any advice?
A. I think invisalign could sort this out for you, make sure you find a good invisalign dentist and ask to see there before and after photos.

Q. Hi,I am 45 years old and had fixed braces to close a large gap in my two front teeth which was removed in March last year. I was overjoyed at the result and had a wire fixed to the back of my teeth to prevent them from moving back, my problem now is that the wire keeps coming off and to date have already swallowed two !The third is now falling off and I cant cope with this for the rest of my life ! I have a retainer to wear at night so if I continue with this alone will my teeth stay in position ? Please help me as my poor husband is now driven to distracton with all this and its already cost him a small fortune to get me a smile I am finally proud of ! Thanks,
A. The night retainer if worn every night will prevent the teeth drifting. You may not be suitable for a bonded retainer as they generally work really well.
