Do Flexible Braces Cause Speech Problems?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016
Q.

I wear NHS partial dentures but I find when I talk I sound weird and people cannot understand me very well, they say I’m swallowing my words. Because of this, I only wear my dentures occasionally. I have heard of flexible dentures being more natural. If I wear them would my speech be normal like my usual voice, or would I have the same problem? Also, because my speech sounds funny to me and others I always feel self conscious of getting into any conversations. I am not into implants as I am terrified of the dentist as it is and also I’m going to be 65 yrs old soon and I would rather save what little money I have towards my retirement.

Will it Take a Long Time to Get My Teeth Sorted?

Thursday, August 13th, 2015
Q.

Dear Sir. My teeth are coming forward and they hit my lower lip and makes marks on it. Because of this my lips are also coming outward. It also creates a problem with speaking as my voice do not get clear and I feel problems when speaking continuously. I also feel odd whenever I speak. When I laugh my teeth come out, which makes me feel bad. I asked the dentist, he told me it could cost nearly £25000 and will take 1 year or more. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do?

I Struggle to Speak After My Treatment. What Should I Do?

Friday, March 13th, 2015
Q.

Sir, I have huge gap between my six upper front teeth. I went to the dentist and he trimmed my all six teeth and placed a bride with two extra fake teeth. After the treatment I am not able to speak properly and it is very uncomfortable for me. Do I have another choice to get out of these problems? I am really tense and scared of re-treating them again. Before going to the dentist I didn’t have any problems. I just wanted to improve the aesthetics. And now I am thinking this was the biggest mistake.

As A Teacher I Would Need Something Other Than Braces Treatment. Would You Recommend Tooth Trimming?

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hi there Dr Gambroudes,
I have front teeth which are, in my opinion, too big for my mouth. I feel that when I smile they stand out too much.
I’ve been to several dentists. Some recommended not doing anything at all while others recommended braces. I feel that having braces at my age (30) is out of the question. I’m a teacher by profession so having braces might also present obstructions in the way I speak in class. I had braces before but it seems that the adjustments weren’t thorough.
I’ve been reading up on dental procedure where teeth are trimmed to a smaller size. Do you think that would help with my problem?
Thanks.

I Recently Had Eight Veneers Fitted And I’m Struggling To Make Certain Sounds. Please Advise Me? It Doesn’t Seem To Get Any Better.

Friday, August 29th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I recently had veneers done on the upper 8 teeth, my old teeth were small and spaced apart. Now I can hardly pronounce anything and especially the
“S” sound. I’ve heard that it gets better with the time but what worries me is that no improvement what so ever had happened since I installed the new veneers. All the practice I’ve been doing seems to have no effect at all. Also the veneers that were installed are bigger and taller than my original teeth. Please advise me doctor? Thanks.

I Had My Teeth Shortened As They Were Chipped. Now I Can’t Make Certain Sounds, Can You Help Me?

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I have had my teeth trimmed quite a bit due to being chipped. I now feel uncomfortable whenever I have to make a th sound. Is that due to trimming? And I just can’t remember how I used to do it. Before having them trimmed I used to make my tongue hit the back of my tongue mostly. With the shorten teeth it automatically wants to go underneath the teeth which doesn’t feel good. Do you have any tips for getting speech back after dental treatment? It’s really bugging me. Thanks.

I Had To Make A Complain About An Ill Fitting Plate A Dentist Gave Me. Do You Know How Much It Will Cost To Fix This?

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I recently had a cap on a plinth removed which was replaced by an ill fitting plate that fits uncomfortably in the roof of my mouth. This makes it hard to actually speak clearly. I have a large gap the size of two teeth at the top which is really embarrassing. Please can you supply a solution and also an approximate cost of what it would be to fix this? I have made a complaint against the dentist to the dental regulator. This was on advice from another dentist who told me it was the worst piece of dentistry he has seen. I look forward to your reply. Thank you for your time.

I Have Temporary Veneers That Are Affecting My Speech, Will The Permanent Veneers Resolve This Problem?

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013
Q.

I am having two veneers on my two front teeth replaced. Originally my temporary veneers were thick and too long and I had a problem with pronouncing letters and also they dug into my lower lip. The temporaries have now been thinned and shortened and that has removed the problem except that now my speech feels lazy. My priority has always been speech over look of teeth so I am concerned now there is another issue.

My dentist and I both agree that the temps are now too short and that the permanent veneers will be longer.

Do you think that the current shorter length of the temp veneers could be the cause of the lazy speech and that it will therefore resolve when the permanent ones are slightly longer? Also, to the left of front teeth I have an old bridge which is has always stuck out beyond adjacent front tooth at the bottom of the tooth. My dentist has matched the position of the veneers to this bridge which means my teeth will be positioned further forward . Do you think that having teeth in a more forward position could be the cause of lazy speech? Thanks.

My Dentures Are Loose And Causing Issues, What Do You Suggest?

Monday, March 11th, 2013
Q.

I have top and bottom full set of dentures two years ago but now they have become loose and getting very awkward especially eating amoung people.I either need my dentures relining or a really good set of dentures that are well fixed to my gum.I have been to see my dentist and was not pleased with the direction he told me to take. He suggested implants which is fair enough but you look at the cost of them and consider that I am a pensioner and just don’t have the money. Sorry to rant a little there but I want alternatives. Don’y advise me om implant, just can’t afford it.Give me your best advice. When I eat some food would get under the top denture ,then I’m unable to carry on eating which is very frustrating. Also I have trouble with speech as well sound funny and around my mouth it appear to be sagging.

Can bridge be done sooner as wearing dentures affects my talking too much?

Friday, December 21st, 2012
Q.

hi there. 5 of my front upper teeth are crowns, they have knocked and kicked through sport for years. i’m 40 now and the front right socket in my gum that the spike part used to be stuck back into was fractured and has had to be extracted. my dentist is now going to bridge but has said this will take 6 months to heal. my question is can this be done sooner as I own a pub and find it so difficult talking to customers with this plastic denture in my mouth. sorry for the long winded story. thanks
