Can lingual braces perfect my smile?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. Hello there:) I’m a 16 year old girly, and I really really hate my teeth! Everyone tells me there’s nothing wrong with them and to be honest there isn’t any major problems! I just want them to look perfect! For me! Here’s an idea of how they look:- / < My top teeth slightly stick out \ < & this is the bottom row. I just want both rows pushed back, straight, but the thing is i really don’t want any normal braces! My hearts set on lingual. As my teeth stick out having normal braces would look flaming rediculous! Could i have lingual braces? All my teeth are together with no gaps apart from the front two, so would having teeth removed be an issue? Im honestly not fussed about the price! but i really wan’t lingual and no other, not even invisalign it’l just look silly. The un-noticable the better! As i said i’m 16 but do i have to pay the whole amount straight away, could i not pay a fee over a period of time as of my circumstances? Sorry if i blabber on, i just really wan’t my teeth straight and my private dentist said no when i was 15. So now i pay the price! Please do get in touch if you have time! I’d love to hear your verdict on my sad dilema! Much appreciated:) Ps: I have no idea if you even specialise in lingual braces, total guess!,
A. Im am not an orthodontist but I can tell you that you may well be a candidate for lingual braces and they cost in the region on £8000. You would have to tlk to the orthodotist carrying out the work in regards to payment plans.Kind regardsDr Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

I am unhappy with results following removal of four bicuspids

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q. Dear doctor, Warm wishes, I have been wearing my fixed ceramic braces for the past two years now. My orthodontist advised me to remove my four bicuspids. After a long thought of nearly about 6 months, i finally removed them. But now i feel my nose looks bigger and my teeth have gone in too much. and i have lost the wide smile that i used to have without removing the four bicuspids. The gaps have not closed yet. I am afraid, my nose would look even more bigger as the gaps close. Can i ask my orthodontist to push my teeth little forward and fix artificial four bicuspids to have a wide smile as before. Please advice. Thanks in advance. Regards, doll,
A. I agree if you feel you would like a wider smile the only option would be to look at having those teeth put back in.

I have relatively large front teeth and considering cosmetic treatment.

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. I haven’t been visited te dentist for a while now, but haven’t expereinced anything major with my teeth. The only thing concerning me with my teeth are the way they look. My front two teeth are quite large, but the only look large as the next set of teeth are small. I’m 20 now but it feels as though my front 4 teeth going bent especially mt 2 ’small’ teeth. i feel so paranoid as i smile alot. I now find my smile to be more smaller and tighter. I’m not sure if braces is a good option although i would like straight teeth all over (my bottom teeth are not too straight either. I’m not keen on braces and i know the pricing to correct my teeth will not be cheap or even a ‘little affrordable’. I’ve haerd about Invisalign. I’m quite interested. However i’m also interested in something that will sort out the problem with my 2 ’small’ teeth, so that they are equal to the rest of my teeth. Is there something that i could have for the small set of teeth, that won’t damage my own teeth and will last me for a long time?

A. To change a shape of the tooth, veneers may be possible. Either composite or porcelain may be possible. I would recommend a consultation to allow the dentist to answer your specific questions.

Need to get back my smile from a history of dental problems.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Hi, i am 28 an have had problems with my teeth for years i have advanced gum disease and have recently had 2 taken out at the front on each side so when i smile it doesnt look very nice also the majority of my bottom teeth are wobbly, they are discoloured some crooked and i hate them. My family has a history of dental problems my grandfather,2 aunts an uncle all had their teeth removed before the age of thirty. I would like to have mine removed but dont know how to go about it or what to even ask for. Money is an issue i am a single parent but am so unhappy with my teeth an always embarrased when i laugh or smile and it is affecting my life. I have however considered long term payment plans which would suit if i you can do that with cosmetic dentistry?. My aunt says she has plates but they dont cover the whole roof of her mouth an fit into her gums and look really natural can you tell me what this is and cost etc. I am considering travelling abroad to get something done as my dentist is very unhelpful, i am looking for some help and guidance please….please help me.

A. A free  initial consultation is available at StJohns Dental in Birmingham as well as some other cosmetic practices. I recommend getting some rough prices and price plans from a couple of cosmetic dental practices before deciding on your next move.Rob

Can NHS dentist answer why my front teeth gap has widened?

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009
Q. Hi I am a healthy and fit 52 and for all my life have had a small gap between my 2 top front teeth. However over the last 6 months or so the gap has widened so far that I can get my tongue in between them! I have been to my dentist who said that she cant see why as I have no sign of gum disease and have healthy teeth. As I cant find an NHS dentist she siad she would refer me to an orthodentist but this is going to cost i just know it!!!I am not that worried about the gap itself butr am concerend that there is something causing it that I should be concerend about. Any suggestions? and also is there any way I can be referered for NHS treatment by my GP?

A. I’m not sure an NHS dentist will be the answer to this largely cosmetic problem. Teeth can move throughout life and if there is definitley no underlying gum disease or loss of the back teeth (this can cause the front teeth to drift) then it might be something you have to live with?

Please suggest the best option for my dental issue.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009
Q. Hi, my front teeth were not straight with the front of my mouth. this has been a problem for over 30 years. 12 months ago i asked the dentist to crown my 4 front teeth so they would look nice, now one tooth is loose and i,m looking at dental implant. do you visit any other part of the country? i live in northampton. will i have a gap until the implant is complete.(this is my biggest fear) can the proceedure be done over a short period of time? all i want is to smile. people think i’m unhappy because i never smile. can you help?

A. I would always try to remove the tooth and fit the implant at the same time. I’m afraid I don’t work in your area but would be very happy to see you at my clinic in Chelmsford Essex

Can I smile again with a crooked teeth and gum recession?

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. I am 55 and have discloured crooked teeth with recession of gums due to long standing disease. I really want to smile. Is it possible to help me with crowns/veneers?

A. This is often a great solution to aesthetic issues following stabilization of the gum health.  Once they have been fitted it will be very important to see the hygienist 3 monthly to keep the periodontal disease under control.  Please come and see me for a free consultation for me to give you a more informed view

Embarrassed about my smile is there any other solution than braces?

Friday, November 27th, 2009
Q. I am very embarrassed about my smile my teeth are just so wonky they just look a mess what other solutions are there instead of braces I want them sorted out as soon as possible. Please help!

A. Braces can take as little as 6 weeks to move your teeth into the right place.  You would be amazed what is possible.  If you still do not want this the other option is veneers but will require the teeth to be heavily prepared which can compromise there health.  Sometimes I will use a brace to move the teeth followed by minimal veneers to improve the shape of the teeth – because the teeth are in a better position the veneers are much safer to do.

Is root canal required before having a crown in my case

Thursday, November 12th, 2009
Q. I asked my doctor to give me a nice smile or correct spaced teeth in the front of my mouth and he is giving me a crown and root canal on the damaged tooth first, but what about the other teeth in the front they are still spaced will i need a root canal on the other teeth in order to get them unspaced and looking nice?

A. It is difficult for me to say without seeing you, all I would say is that you don’t always need root canal before  crown or veneer is fitted

Need a dental treatment to smile better from what I have now

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009
Q. Hi Dr Solanki, I have a narrow tooth to the left of my front teeth and to the left of that tooth I have a fang tooth which I really hate the appearance and feeling of, it is positioned a bit higher than my other teeth and when my mouth is closed if you press along my mouth you can clearly feel a difference there, also when smiling it does not look good. I love to smile but past few years I smile alot less with my mouth open, it does affect me and in general most of my teeth need fixing eg; straightened, some reshaped to look even and whitened. I was wondering what could be done to help with my upper left fang tooth so it looks normal and also for all my teeth to be straight, even and white? I would prefer not to have braces. Hope you can make some sense of what I am asking for here and also any general pricing to give me an idea would be great. Many Thanks.

A. Thanks for your questions, although you would prefer not to have braces, I would encourage you to look into the various types of braces which are available today. There are systems which can work in as little as six weeks, as well as systems which are virtually invisble. If however this is really not for you, you may wish to consider having the teeth veneered. The veneers could be used to alter the size, shape, colour and overall aesthetic appearance of your teeth, to create the smile you desire. I hope this helps.
Many Thanks

The replaced crown has not changed my cosmetic appearance

Monday, November 9th, 2009
Q. Hi Dr Moore My dentist recently fitted a new (procera inceram) crown for me to replace an old crown. It is my big front incisor on the top. He has done a good job with the shape and colour but I can still see a blue line at the margn. My natural smile shows my gum line and the main reason I asked for a new crown was that several friends got crowns that seem to be like real teeth and have subgingival margins. When I asked my dentist for a new crown I made it clear money was not a consideration and that cosmetic appearance was my priority regardless of cost. But on fitting my new crown it is most definitely at least half a mil short of my gums and not much of an improvement over my last crown. Should I sack the dentist I have had since a child on the grounds he is a dinosaur. or should I quietly go behind his back?

A. Go back to him to voice your concerns, it maybe that the crown could be remade with a more sub-gingival margin.

Front teeth stick out and look very bad need treatment

Monday, November 9th, 2009
Q. Dear Mr Bohara, When i was around 15 i was referred to a orthodontist, I cancelled the appointment and didn’t continue with my treatment. Two of front teeth stick out like ”vampire teeth”. I was just wondering how much it would cost me to have braces and how long do you think i would have to keep them on for!

A. Hi

You would require a consultation initially to see what your treatment options would be. The cost would be depndable on the type of sytem you wish i.e damon, invislalign, six months smiles, etc
The cost could vary from £2000 to £4000 dependable on the system and complexity. The time required for the treatment would be dependable on the complexity.

Is one day implant recommended considering bone loss?

Thursday, November 5th, 2009
Q. Dr. andrew i am 18 yrs old and i lost my right front tooth at age 7 at a car accident.I need to implant a tooth , i visited a dentist once and he said that i would need to implant bone and gum. I wanted to know if you could tell me if he is right and if i am a good candidate for the one day implant if not how long will the WHOLE precedure last (weeks, monthes). thank you for your attention .

A. I can’t really tell you without a thorough assessment and x-ray whether you would be suitable for an immediately loaded implant or whther the bone needs rebuilding first. As a guess if the tooth was lost 11 years ago i would assume the bone needs rebuilding 1st then the implant placed at a later date. this type of treatment usually takes 6-9 months to complete
