Can a paint be used to improve colour of silver fillings?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010
Q. I have a lot of silver fillings and have been advised that replacing these with white fillings would not be the way forward as these are not as strong. The reason I would prefer white is purely for the cosmetic appearance. My question is – Is there a paint that is suitable that will cover the silver fillings to give the white finish and if so who would I approach ?,
A. No you can’t paint the fillings as it will wear out almost straight away. You could consider crowns or ceramic fillings as this is a much stronger alternative

My filling is fracturing and tastes weird is it harmless?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q. Hi there, Im 27 and having a nightmare with my teeth, I havnt been to the dentist in over 3 years because my husbands salary went up and we are no longer entitled to it free. Anyway, my top middle tooth had previously had a black filling in, and the other day while I was eating a crunchy pizza, I heard a crack and half the filling fell out, the tooth is wobbly at the back half and Im really sore. Every time I swallow, I taste a chemical taste and worried about mercury poisoning (if not, what is the taste?) I have to find a dentist on Monday, and wont even have the time off to get it fixed until next Friday, whats the best thing to do until then, is the chemical taste harmless? half the filling is still there. Thank you This is horrible

A. Hopefully you have found a dentist and been properly examined

My new silver fillings tastes metalic should I be worried?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Dear Rob, I have just had a silver filling frmo my local NHS dentist. In fact I’ve had three – I knew about two but it looks to me like I have had a third added onto one of my other teeth. The third filling tastes slightly metalic as I run my tongue over it. My dentist had to reshape the filling in the next tooth – otherwise nothing else of note happened. Do I need to get the metalic taste checked out? Many thanks!!!

A. It should resolve within a few days otherwise get it reviewed

Back tooth with amalgam filling causing severe pain.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. I had back tooth problems. there was hole on my back teeth. it was extream pain. i went to dentiest and did the amalgam filing on that and that i got much more pain on it. i cant bite anything. next day dentist said that i got infection and he gave amoxicillin. and he said that i need to do crown on it. can you please tell me what to do. it herts me a big time.

A. It sounds like the tooth either needs to be extracted or the nerve removed if you are in severe pain. Pop back to your dentist and see what they can do

NHS dentist has advised to have veneers please advise.

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. My two front teeth are worn away at the bottom i had a bap inbetween when i was growing up for the past couple of years i have been getting the gap filled will tiny fillings iv just recently been to my dentist which is NHs and they said i should get veneers im unsure what to do ?? as my teeth are healthy otherwise

A. My advice would be to firstly find out what has caused your teeth to wear down as this can affect the restorations that are placed on your teeth.  If after this you decide that your tooth shape needs to be improved then a veneer option would be reasonable

Is sub-standard material used for making dental bridges?

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. Hello, I had a bridge fitted in April.Yesterday I bit a piece of sellotape off the roll and as a result a piece chipped off the bottom of my tooth. My dentist said I need a new bridge, I was told that bridges are only guaranteed for 3 months, I thought that fillings, crowns etc were guaranteed for 12 months. I had a bridge previously for 12 years with no problems (also using my teeth on Sellotape). This makes me wonder if the materials used are sub-standard as I have done nothing extreme to warrant the damage.

A. In these situations you do need to go back to your dentist with your concerns.  There is no standard guarantee for dental work.  Using your teeth whether they are natural or made by a dentist should ideally only be used for eating food as using them to break cello-tape etc can produce a surprisingly high force on the material.  the bridge may be able to be repaired

How much does silver tooth would cost?

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. Hi. I wanted to know how much a silver tooth would cost, I don’t know anything about it or how it would be done but how much do they normally go for?

A. It is not the cost of the material but the necessary skill of the procedure that you are paying for – in my practice I would charge a fee of £875. Hope this helps

Does filling fall out if its not capped?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Q. I have had many fillings in my front teeth (6-11). Some of them came loose after a couple months. My dentist said that he would like to cap these teeth. He said that my fillings will just keep falling out. Is this true? I have become very depressed about my teeth. I want to keep my teeth for as long as possible. I am only 30. What are my options?

A. If teeth are properly bonded the filllings should not keep falling out – unless there is very little tooth structure left

Can I have root filling after veneer?

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009
Q. Hi, I have a front tooth whith veneer and it started feeling a bit tender and painful for a couple of months, my dentist is suggesting a root filling but being one of my front teeth I am very worried if it tuns out okay without any visible damage afterwards. The pain is not severe and is acutally bearable but feels tender. My dentist also says it might fall out at some point which is devastating for me. Can you please advise if I should get the root filling done and if there is any way to save the tooth.

A. It sounds as though you need to have the root treatment – I would follow the advice of your dentist

Chipped tooth has a temporary filling can I have veneers on it?

Friday, November 20th, 2009
Q. My toddler ran at me with a heavy toy and chipped my top front tooth so it’s on the diagonal. I have had a temporary filling from an emergency NHS dentist. ( I’ve never had a filling before so know nothing about the proceedure etc. ) I saw my dentist today and he informs me that he will be able to do a new filling and make it look like a normal tooth. The rest of the tooth is fine. He said I won’t need a veneer, although could have one done later. I am worried the filling won’t be strong enough (my dentist said I would have to be careful biting into apples etc) What should I do. At the moment I’m finding the temporary filling very wierd and uncomfortable. Would a veneer be a better option or should I stick with the filling?

A. I would try a new filling first then see how it goes and how it looks. It is sometimes very difficult to get a great aesthetic result with a single veneer although it would be a bit stronger.

Should I consider cosmetic treatment for my endless teeth issues

Friday, November 20th, 2009
Q. Over the last few years i have had endless fillings and 4 extractions. my dentist told me i may have rapid caries. currently 14 of my teeth are filled, with one from each side top and bottom missing, all 4 wisdom teeth are ruptured and are growing in awkward shapes and hurt the inside of my mouth and cheeks. i’m only 22 and feel my teeth are so unsightly i am ashamed to smile. i try my best to take care of them but when problems continue to arise it really knocks my confidence. i’m considering cosmetic treatment but don’t know where to start and i’m a very nervous patient so feel fear talking to dentists about procedures. i just wish i could start over with my teeth but understand thats just not possible. i am writing really just to see what treatments are available and what costs i will need to pay. thanks for taking the time to read my question and i look forward to hearing from you.

A. Hello, the options for you are endless depending on what you would like to acheive and the budget you have. You may also want to consider sedation for the longer procedures to help with your anxiety. If you’d like me to take a look I can offer you a free consultation to give you a better idea of your options. Please call the clinic on 01245 268 494

Is any other fillings better than Silver fillings?

Friday, November 20th, 2009
Q. My back teeth and top back teeth are filled with silver fillings. My dentist wants to replace them all due to some decay. I have requested white ones or cerac, however, he suggests that they should be filled with the usual silver fillings because they are stronger and lasts longer. I have one back tooth which is broken in half. My dentist has suggested keeping this tooth and filling the other half with silver filling and not undertaking a cerac fitting. I am not whether I want to replace my silver fillings but, he says white fillings don’t last long and are prone to decay, and he went to a cerac demonstration and did not think much of it. This is a private dentist which specialises in cosmetic procedures. Should I seek a second opinion? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

A. Hi

Thanks for your question. I think you are on the right lines, i would suggest a second opion. Silver fillings are strong and last well but as too are the new modern composites which are bonded to the tooth and also porcelain inlays and cerec as these are created to fit the cavity exactly. Each cavity can have several options so its best to get a dental proffessional have a look and give you all the options especially if your looking to improve the apperance.
i hope this helps
