Q. i have got to go under sedation and worried about it, how could i get out of this phobia of being sedated its sounds worrying knowing that ill still be awake during this.
A. Sedation is an excellent and safe technique for nervous patients, although you’re still ‘awake’ you wpn’t be aware of what is going on around you. Perhaps you should ask your dentist for some more advice regarding the procedure.

Q. dear dr moore i am hopeing to have some implants but i have a extreme fear of dentists so i have been trying to find one who will give a general anesthesia i have found two clinics which say they do and wene you phone them they talk you out of it and say they wont do it and its there in black and white. so could you help me or do you know of any one. hpoe you dont mind me asking you this.
A. Hello, It will be very dificult to find someone to do this for you but you could try Ashok Sethi in Harley Street as he has access to Hospital services at a nearby medical centre. You could also try sedation which is cheaper safer and more readliy available

Q. Hi, Today at work one of my back teeth has cracked- it has a 10 year old filling inside. I’ve been advised it’ll probably need a crown. However I’m petrified of the dentist and have to be sedated when I go. How much will the work cost and if I took out private dental insurance, would it cover the work? I know it’ll be about £400 but that’s half my wages so won’t be able to afford it! Please advise in anyway possible. Many Thanks
A. Thanks for your questions, I am unsure as to whether taking out a dental insurance policy at this stage would help, as the need for treatment already exists? However, many detal practice are able to offer payment plans, such an interest free credit. I would suggest that you ask your dentist about the payment plans they have available, or alternatively reasearch dentists in your area who offer suitable schemes. I hope this helps.

Q. I’m quite young, Actually just 21! I used to always hate going to the dentist when i was little so i had Pretty teeth in the front but horrible ones in the back. When i finally went to one when i was 16 he did 4 root canals on 2 of my back teeth on both sides. I had medicaid at the time and didn’t tell me that medicaid wouldn’t pay for the rest so basically i couldnt do anything about it. From then on i had to get 2 back teeth pulled (on the same side) which doesn’t bother me.. I’m goin to have to get the other teeth pulled soon and some on top in the back. My question is. well my front teeth are decaying and almost gone. What are my options that i can get done. I will save up the money to pay for it but just trying to get info on what i should be getting done! and its about 4 teeth up front! Thanks so much for your time!
A. It depends on the extent of the decay if the teteh can be saved root canal treatmnet and crowns may be an option, if the decay is quite shallow you might be able to have fillings. if the teeth need to be removed your options are dentures, bridges or dental implants.

Q. I have an abnormal physcological fear of dentists which is a result of a face slap by a dentist when I was a child (he pushed a sore tooth with his finger and I bit his finger) The last time I visited a dentist was 1972 they pumped me full of “happy gas” to try and get me to relax, I burned it up quicker than they could pump it in. When I get hurt I become violent, subsequently I have to be put under with a general anesthetic. My teeth need to be sorted out and some implants out in for ones that are missing and others that will have to be removed, but feel it would have to be done under proper hospital op conditions Is this possible please.
A. Hi, there are other options, certainly you might be able to have treatment under general anaesthetic at a hospital. In my clinic we treat so many nervous patients who have had similar problems to you. You need to find a dentist you can trust. in my practice we use IV sedation but we also use a medical anaesthist you can combine a number of drugs to relax you. I find this works very well.

Q. hi there im a 25 year old male with a huge problem i have very very bad teeth in fact i have neglected them for so long i barely have any left!now the problem i have is that 1 i am petrified of the dentist and 2 i do not think i can afford to get them fixed or replaced please could you advise me of what i can do several years of agony and funny looks has got to come to an end
A. for NHS treatment contact your PCT ( Primary healthcare trust) dental contracts division and ask for details of local sedation services for dental anxiety .
for private options check the practice offers IV sedation then investigate a few local ones before deciding on the best one for you.

Q. HI DR i am so scared of having my teeth looked at , And I know I need some teeth removed because some are black and chiped . Can I be put to sleep ?
A. contact your local primary Healthcare Trust (PCT) ask for Dental Contracts and they will tell you who has a NHS sedation contract in your area. For Private treatment search for practices offering IV sedation.
Sedation is probably your best route which is why I given those details although you need to speak to the provider to wexplain what this be be like in your case. The risks associated with general anaesthetics mean it is rarely indicated for dentistry, and if it is you would need a hospital refferal from a dental practice like the sedation services mentioned.

A. It might be decay or stain, go to your orthodontist as its best to catch these things early

Q. Hello there, i have just come back from a visit to the dentist i have not gone for a number of years due to being so scared of what they would say and do!! I have come back with an apptionment in December for 2 fillings and to have a chipped toothe capped, he has put a temp cap on it, my main question is that i have slilt Gingivtis, thius has scares the living days out of me as i am only in my 20’s, he tld me to change my mouth wash, and get a soft Toothe Brush and it should get better, what toothe Paste would be the best for this??? And how long should this temp cap last for??? Many thanks
A. The temp cap should last till your next visit but be careful with it. If you have bleeding gums you could try corsodyl mouthwash for a week or so but it can stain the teeth. Ask the dentist if you can see his Hygieinist to give them a good scale before your next visit.

Q. Q. Hi Dr, I hope u might be able to advise me. I have recently had my porcelain veneers repalced for new ones as I wanted to upgrade them for whiter ones for my wedding. I asked the dentist to copy the shape and size exactly of my previous ones as it is only the colour I wanted to improve. I am now very disappointed and upset as, although the new veneers are a lovely colour, one of the central incisors is shorter and a different shape to the one beside it. They just dont match and it looks odd. It is also more protruding than the one next to it, whereas previously the veneers (and temps) were perfectly straight. Can this one veneer be replaced for one that is a correct shape and alignment, so that it matches the others? Or will it look odd just changing one? I am a very nervous dental patient and dont know if I could cope with having them all prepared again. Please help. Thank you
A. Thanks for your question, it is possible to replace just the one veneer, and as they have not been on long, the colour should be a perfect match. I would be tempted to ask the dentist to have his lab create a wax up to ensure that you are happy with the shape prior to beginning the treatment to replace the veneer. Preperation and planning are essential in smile makeovers like yours.

Q. Hi,I’m a very unhappy lady when it comes to my teeth , it sometimes brings me to tears i have never been able to smile for a photo and would love to. Im about to turn 40 and for once im my life would like to smile.My front three teeth are not straight,and seem to be going see through,one has had an rct and is now going grey , can you tell me what can be done and how much it can possible cost . im terrified of the dentist as well. Q. Hello, I have a front tooth that is rotting, it has turned black and does not look nice, I know I need the dentist but I have not had any good experiences with the dentist hence why I’ve put it off for so long, I know I have to go sooner rather than later but I’m worried about what they will do with the tooth in question, will they take it out or can they repair it?

You need the check up before you can get down to details. The good thing is that you dont have to have anything done at the first visit , just decide on some likely options.

Q. i seem to have a habbit of pushing my front teeth with my tongue and then pushing them back again and now, i find myself doing it all day without realizing it and now i think one of my front teeth are shaky, it seems to move a bit more now, out of place when i push it and instead of stopping, i do it alot more now to see if it really is shaky or not. im terrified as im only 21. what can i do if they fall out? i also grind my back teeth in my sleep and during the day which is a new thing during the day. what are dental implants? are they screw ins? if my teeth come out could i get them on nhs? in the morning i feel as though if i just push my teeth theyl pop out so i try to avoid doing that 1st thing in the morning. im terrified on dental jags so cant go to dentist, i would go if i could get put to sleep tho, please help
A. Start by forcing yourself to visit 3 different practices that seem friendly to anxious patients. You can be adamant that you only want an opinion not treatment. ( check prices for assesment before you go )
One of them will feel better and more in tune with you. Then start with some simple treatment to boost your confidence.

Q. Hi there. I have had the biggest fear of the dentist since I can remember and I am now 20 and still haven’t gotten over this fear. I’ve been to a number of dentists, one who tried giving me sedatives which didn’t work for me at all as I am so nervous about the dentist. I have recently been having hypnotherapy for the dentist however I still get ever so anxious about the dentist and it makes me feel ill. I have always been told that I’ll need implants as I never had enough teeth. However I feel I require implants sooner than I’d like. I have a hole in one of my front teeth and this makes me so self conscious that I can’t smile. This is currently ruining my life as I have no self confidence because of this. I’d like to be able to smile and not worry about the way I look. How are the implants placed? Is this under anesthetic? Also roughly how much would it cost to replace the front big tooth? Thank you ever so much for your help.
A. I’m sorry to hear of your problems. Implants are normally placed with just local anaesthetic but intra-venous sedation works well to make patients less anxious during the proceedure. The cost for a single front tooth and sedation will be in the region of £2200 at my clinic in Essex.

Q. I am 47 years old and have not been to a dentist for 27 years after a quite terryfying experience. I have lost alot of teeth and apart from a few at the front bottom and top the others remaining are broken or decaying. I am scared stiff of the dentist and get panicky just thinking about it. Could you give me some idea of how I will accepted if I go. I do not want to be lectured as i am well aware of my situation. What I need is a sympathic and calming approach but I am really scred this may not be the case.
A. When I see patients such as yourself I am certainly not judgmental but concerned about treating your mouth back to health. For patients who are scared of dentistry there are a number of ways to help you through the process. In my experience most patients who are as scared as you find IV sedation a great help. They find that this technique makes them very relaxed during the treatment and also they have little memory of the event. This also allows me to carry out the best treatment possible. Q. Hello, I have just been to my dentist as I was experiencing pain in my lower back teeth. I had an x-ray done and was told that my lower back teeth were fine but that I have alot of decay in my top canine tooth and that it will need fixing immediatly. She then poked and blew air into it asking me if it hurt which it didn’t and then said I would need the tooth sorting but said that it would be extremley difficult. I asked if she meant if I was going to lose the tooth or need a root canal and she said no nothing like that, she would just need to do a normal type filling but just that it was going to be very difficult. I am now scared and don’t understand. Please could you explain this to me a little more? What happens during a filling of you canine tooth and why would it be so difficult? Please please help!!!

Q. hello, im nearly 28 and i remember visiting the dentist when i was very young, ive never been since. my teeth are seriously deformed, next to my front two teeth, on either side are large teeth that have grown outwards, i cant smile and its becoming a serious issue. im so depressed and need help. im scared to see a dentist out of sheer embaresment. Im also on income support. what can i do? will i ever be able to smile again. i totaly need new teeth. its wrecking my life. please help thank you
A. Its very difficult to pluck up the courage to see someone but i’m sure it will be worth it. You will qualify for free dental treatment if you can find an NHS dentsit who will take you on. Alternatively you may need to pay separatley for any cosmetic treatment you may require.
