Q. During a dental check up I was asked if I wanted a scale and polish. I said yes to this during which the hygienist got the drill out and started on the bottom teeth(previously this had been done by hand) she then went to an area where I had a fixed dental bridge and put the drill to it. It scared me a little and I put my hand up to stop. When I was with a previous dentist he said he would leave that are whilst cleaning but always said that I was to keep it clean. I have actually had the dental bridge now for about 30 years. During my latest check up the current dentist said there was a hole around the dental bridge area and said i had a rotten tooth fixed to the dental bridge. I am not sure about this, I have no pain and wonder if the hole he talked about was caused by the hygienist using the drill in a delicate area- should she have done this? Thanks
A.
The hygienist will have used an ultrasonic cleaner rather than a “drill”. This used correctly will clean away tarter and plaque leaving clean teeth. The likely hood is that the hole is due to decay and the hygienist has removed tarter covering over the decay. None the less please voice your concerns with your dentist

Q. About 2 years ago i had root canal treatment on a cracked tooth and the tooth was then filed down and a crown put over it. Everything has been fine up until now but now when i try to chew on it i hurts very much and the pain takes a while to go away. Im just wondering what has occured to suddenly have brought on this pain.
A. hi
you may have developed a crack in the root or the root canal may have started to fail due to bacterial proliferation around the root

Q. After a severe fall I lost 2 dental crowns on the left lower side of my mouth. My dentist has informed me that my roots will not support post crowns and that I will have to have a saddle denture. I am deeply unhappy about this. Is there an alternative -and what could be the problem with my roots?
A. If the roots are infected, mobile or cracked then they won’t hold a crown. You could consider removing the teeth and using dental implants to hold new teeth in the area. This maybe more comfortable than a denture.

Q. I had a root canal done on my last molar, bottom right side. Right after the root canal I started getting a constant pain on my lower jaw. The root canal was done in July 2008, I have been dealing with this pain for almost a year now. I finally went to see a dentist, he thinks that one of the roots was not completely filled in and I may possibly have a hairline fracture right in the middle of the molar. He’s advising I do a re-root canal treatment but if it is fractured, he would have to extract the tooth and insert an implant. What should I do? Root canal? Just extract my tooth and leave it alone or do an implant? Can’t afford to pay an arm and a leg.
A. I would go with your dentists recommendation and try to re treat the rot of the tooth. You should know fairly quickly whether this is successful

Q. I am very scared of the dentist and had not been for years but had too go due to being in pain everyday with my teeth and in a result of not goin for so long i have now got too have 5 teeth taken out as they have just gone rotten. They will not take them out due too me being so terrified so i am having to be sedated and i am also very worried of that to. Im worried of all sorts. but just wanted some sort of advise and reasurance of the sedation. thank you.
A. hi many thanks for your email, sedation is a very safe treatment to have done in surgery. it is usually adminstered via oral or IV. as long as the clinic is trained sufficiently to administer the sedation then you have nothing to worry about. the other great thing about having treatment under sedation is you do not recall the treatment which helps keep the anxiety levels down.

Q. Hello, My new dentist is suggesting replacing and extending a root canal that was done several years ago before she applies a crown to the dead tooth, as x-rays show it doesn’t go the full length of the root and is a little uneven. It’s never caused me problems in the 16+ years I’ve had it, but she says it might be a good idea to give the crown a better foundation, but the choice is mine – what’s the wisest decision to make?
A. It is entirely at your own risk if you choose to have the crown fitted without the re-root canal treatment.
It is always good practice to have a solid foundation, but as you have not had any problems with te tooth in over 16 years, I think you hav ealready made your own mind up!
If however, there is infection at the root and still it isn’t causing you any problems, then it is like a time-bomb waiting to happen- and can flare up without notice!
Hope this all makes sense.

Q. i’m a 32 yrold male,i have not been to a dentist for 15 years and have neglected my teethmy front teeth are chipped and my back teeth at bottom have rotted away and my teeth need straightened,i am asshamed to smile or when i have conversations,i work so can afford to pay, really want to have nice teeth asap, can uyou help. regards,
A.
Dear,
I am sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with you teeth. You may find comfort in knowing that your situation is not uncommon and many people have a phobia of dentists.
The first step would be to book in with a dentist for a full examination. At this appointment the dentist will just talk with you and assess you mouth in order to give you a step-by-step treatment plan of work that is needed in order for everthing to be stable and healthy.
Once this is acheived the next step is then to assess what can be done cosmeticaly to make you proud to show off your teeth again.
I have seen many nervous patients over the years who once have taken the first step, always wish they had done it sooner. I am sure you will find the thought of the dentist is a lot more frightening than the actual reality of it.
Before booking an appointment I would research dentists that are particularly good with nervous patients or perhaps ask friend and family for a recommendation.
I hope this has been of help to you.
Good luck with taking the next steps and please do not hesitate to contact if you have any further questions.
Kind regards
Dr Justin Glaister

Q. Hi am a very nervous patient when it comes to Dentists. I am due to have a route canal done tomorrow how pain full is this? as one one i ask tells me and they just say “good luck, its very painful!” Please id like a truthful honest answer. Thanks
A.
Root canal should not be painful at all. You do need to be fully numb, so there are a couple of injections at the beginning which register 5 out of ten for discomfort. After that you need a little time for the injection to “soak in “.
Root Canal can be done over more than one visit if you need to go slower.
Sometimes you get a bruising type low grade ache 3-5 days following root canal. Normal headache tablets will resolve this completely.
Dont forget to let your dentist know how you are doing, if you feel its a bit of struggle, they may be able to change tecnique.

Q. Hi i am 36 years of age and i detest my teeth. Some are rotting i have sore / bleeding gums when i brush. Front teeth some are crooked and discoloured. I am scared of dentists since i was a kid and i suffer a lot from bad breath. What can i do ? I’d love to get them fixed and have a smile that my partner would love and boost my self confidence. What are the costs etc. I am living i ireland but willing to travel to fix my teeth.
A.
” salvage ” dentistry is not easy to give even a ball park figure. The cheapest option will often be extraction of hopeless teeth , replace missing teeth with a denture and fillings if the holes are smaller cost might be under £1000 At the other end we use crowns, bridges veneers, orthodontics and dental implants costs might be over £20,000. In the middle lots of other options.
One approach might be a simple start to build your confidence in your dentist then do some more advanced work later.
We would love to see you if you can’t find a dentist locally. In the first instance I would recommend a huge leap of courage and visit a couple of your local dentists and see if you feel comfortable with them.
Questions to think about before you go
Do you mind dentures
Can you wear dentures for a while ( during a longer treatment )
What is the budget
Should you do it on Finance
Do you need sedating ( tablets of valium or similar injection )
If you have no joy please feel free to contact me.

Q. I have a friend who’s teeth are in not good shape. His wisdom teeth are coming in and his teeth are starting to rot. He brushes his teeth prob 2 to 3 times a day and uses mouthwash. The prob is he’s only 19 and doesnt have enough money to go to a denist. He has many other bills to pay for himself and can not afford what he really needs. What can he do?
A.
There is an NHS form AG1 you can get at large post offices and some NHS dentists. It checks your income, if you fall into a low income bracket you either get it free or reduced cost. There are only two fees NHS if you pay full price £44.60 for any number of fillings inc root fillings & cleaning or £198 for any number of crowns , dentures fillings etc.

Q. Hello, I only have 10 permanent teeth. The top front 6 and the front bottom 4. The rest are baby teeth… I have no wisdom teeth, one 12-year molar just commimg in & im 25 years old.. I simply have no permanent teeth under the baby teeth… My dentist is amazed of the condition of my baby teeth.. but I dont want dentures at 30. What do you suggest to keep my baby teeth from rotting??… will they rot??? When I was a teenager they put this nailpolish-like stuff on…but it came off quickly..and reminded me of having popcorn in my teeth. Are veneers a good idea? Thanks
A. hi The baby teeth will stay in place if the permanent teeth are not underneath. I would recommend regular visits with your dentist, excellent oral hygiene and flouride toothpaste and mouthwash to strengthen the enamel. If they eventually become loose you could consider implants to replace the teeth instead of dentures.
regards
Andrew

I VISTED A DENTIST 2-5-09 TOOK X-RAY WENT UNDETECTED STILL TENDER SORE NOT TO MENTION PAIN RECOMMENDED ROOT SPECIALIST, ITS JUST A REGULAR GOLD CROWN DON’T YOU REMOVE COVER DRILL AND REFILL AND TOSS THE CROWN BACK DOWN. WHO YOU GONNA CALL? ANY PAIN KILLER BESIDES THE USUAL ASPIRIN, IBUPROFEN, ACETAMINOPHEN, OR OTC, TAKE BY THE TON AND NEVER DONE. WHATS THE BEST WAY.
A. See your dentist or Endodontist for a root canal treatment or remove the tooth. He also might be able to drill through the crown and fill the hole at the end of treatment

Q. I’m 37 Years of Age. I’m on the Brink of Depression. My teeth have rotted, there are half bits her and there, and where they have rotted at the front I look like a Vampire. I am so afraid of Dentists, and worried they will refuse treatment due to the extent of the damage. I embarrassed not just for myself, but for my Children. I don’t go out, and if i speak I will often talk with my hand in front of my face. I.m a Single Parent, on Working Tax Credits, but Payment is a big issue. I don’t have a Bank Account, si unabe to pay Direct Debits. Please help me, as i wish to Smile again.
A. I’m not great on details of NHS exemtion but I think that the working tax credit means automatic free treatment. If not the form AG1 is avaialable from big post offices and some NHS dental Practices. this provides free or reduced charges if you are on low income.
It might be a case of a simple things first, remove the worst teeth, replace with dentures then try to salvage the rest.
good Luck
