Q. Hi Dr. Moore, I just had a root canal done about a month ago on one of my molars (the 6th tooth on my right). And as recommended I went back to my regular dentist yesterday to get a crown . However, my regular dentist personally feels that it is better to just go with the filling as I have a lot of good teeth structure. Her only worry is that I grind my teeth at night. So I’ve got a night guard. She told me to give some time to consider whether or not I should really get a crown because she thinks my teeth should last for a long time if I’m careful. What is your recommendation and view towards this? Thanks
A. Hello, it is common practice to crown a tooth after a root canal as the tooth is more brittle. However if that involves extensive loss of tooth structure you could consider a ceramic inlay. This is stronger than a filling but less destructive than a crown. Regards Andrew

Q. i have soreness in my mouth especially at the tip of my tongue, and i have pain in the roots of my teeth ,sometimes it feels like its all up my face. and i have a sticky white salava coming off my teeth or tongue, been to dentist and they keep saying there is nothing wrong but yet i have all this pain , have you any idea what it could be.
A. I would recommend tha tyou ask your dentist to refer you to an oral surgeon as their may be other causes rather than obvious dental problems.

Q. I had a root canal done on my upper back tooth 4 years ago and recently it has begun to hurt when i bite on it or tap the tooth. Does this mean i will have to have the procedure repeated or will antibiotics get rid of the pain? I had a check up approx 4 weeks ago and an x-ray and nothing adverse was shown. Thanks
A. It may require a redo of the root treatment or possibly a crown if the tooth is developing a split

Q. following treatment for a recurring abscess my dentist has told me i’ve got a fractured root canal. He has taken impressions of my teeth. As a nervous patient what can i expect to happen next?

Q. Hi, I am getting a root canal on one of my front teeth (upper right incisor). I had some work done on this same tooth last yr by a different dentist, it was already slightly discoloured so he did something to it and made it nice and healthy looking again (I think it may have been a composite filling or something?) I have been advised by the dentist I am having the root canal from that this tooth will discolour after the root canal. Will this still be the case despite the composite filling? If so, would it be possible to have a veneer bonded to the tooth rather than a crown? If I did have a crown would it be more noticeable than a veneer? Thank you
A. hi many thanks for your email, once a tooth has been root canal treated one main risk is that the tooth can discolour, a veneer can help to improve the colour it just depends on how dark the tooth ends up. also with a veneer in the future if the tooth discolours more this can lead to the veneer looking darker!. A crown will help to block more of the discolured tooth and if done using a skilled dentist and technician the crown can look just as natural as a veneer.

Q. My daughter in law went for a scale and polish at a private dentist and the dentist hit a nerve. The dentist said he has to do a root canal to fix it. My daughter-in-law was in terrible pain. The root canal was done and they sent her home with no medication. Since then she has been in horrible pain. A tingling, sharp pain that is non stop.The dentist says he cant see her for 4 more days. There is no swelling, no fever but no relief even with regular painkillers. Any advice?
A. The only advice I can give you is for her to have a soft diet and to take pain killers until her dentist can see her

Q. Hello i had root canal treatment not long back – i ate something hard and chewy and part of my tooth has come off – its very painful , there is still some tooth there will the pain go away ? and is there any way i could save the tooth
A. Back teeth following root treatment are usually crowned to prevent splitting of the tooth. It is likely that the piece of tooth you have broken is still attached at the gum level and this is what is causing you pain. If this is so the dentist should be able to remove the broken part of the tooth and to crown what is remaining

Q. hi there i am 26 years old and i have really bad front teeth, they are both dead from where i fell of my bike and the left one sticks out massivly. i have had 2 root canals on both of them, i really want my teeth to be straight and white but can not afford the cost of braces. i would consider crowns but i went to see a dentist and he said that because my left tooth sticks out to much they wont be straight at the top but they will at the bottom. in all my photos since having the accedent in 2001 i have never smiled showing my teeth. if you know how i can get them straightend on a buget them please let me know as its been a dream of mine to have them done but never had the cash to do it.. thank you for reading this
A. hi, thanks for your email, this is always a difficult situation. however with the advent of interest free credit to help make treatment affordable i think you could have a proper job done and be able to smile on a budget. some dental practices offer interest free loans over a maximum of three years so to make it even more affordable. the first thing you need to work out is what is a montly affordable payment you would be happy to make. seek the advice of a cosmetic dentist and work along these terms. hope this is helpful.

Q. hi Dr Caplan 24 years ago i had 4 crowns fitted, my teeth were uneven before the crowns so the dentist inserted metal posts into my gums the new crowns were fab since then i have had a root canal filling due to reacurring abscess which took several hours 3 years ago one of the metal posts dropped out the dentist did some alterations to the crown and put the post in place he told me it could last one week one month or maybe years depending on how i looked after it and he would not be able to do any further repairs and my options would be a inplant or a denture the post has dropped out again it is next to sound tooth and a crown ,what are my options i cannot afford a inplant and do not want a plate thank you
A. Your only othe roption will be to have a bridge to replace the failing crown/crowns

Q. hello, i had a upper root canal done then a perm crown. this tooth still hurts (pain in root) dispite nothing wrong showing on xray, plus 2 lots of anti biotics later. now all my upper teeth ache especially my front ones? what could this be i am really fed up. i would value you opinion thanks so much
A. hi many thanks for your email, i think the pain is radiating from the tooth which has been root canaled. if the tooth is not settling my advice would be to asked to be referred to a specialist endodontist who is more likely to get to the bottom of the problem and resolve the pain.

Q. My crown fell off at dinner and now the root canal filling fell out. My dentis t is on vacation and I leave tomorrow “on a jet plane”. Am I in big trouble with the hole.

Q. HELLO DR PATEL. I HAD A ROOT CANAL ON A LARGE UPPER MOLAR. IT HAS NOW STOPED HURTING. I CAN EAT PAIN FREE ON IT, TOUCH IT PAIN FREE, TAP IT PAIN FREE. HOWEVER IT FEEL WEIRD LIKE THERE A SMALL AMOUNT OF PRESSURE IN IT . MY FRONT TEETH HAVE STARTED TO ACHE SINCE THE ROOT CANAL. MY JAW ALSO ACHES NEAR MY EARS. I HAVE HAD THE BITE ADJUSTED AND ITS PERFECT. COULD THIS BE SINUS? KIND REGDS.
A. If there was infection it could take a while to settle it sounds like the symptoms are reducing so I would wait until everything is pain free. It could be a sinus infection or the fact that the bite was too proud. Leave everything for at least 10 days unless symptoms get worse.

Q. Two years ago I went to the dentist for my regular scaling and check up. My dentist told me I had a cavity and thus would need a filling. I got my scaling and my filling done that day. He then told me to come back if I feel discomfort in my just-filled tooth (which I thought was weird because fillings aren’t associated with post-procedure pain). My tooth did hurt a bit, but I thought I’d survive, so I didn’t go back to my dentist for about a year and a half. Now (it’s been 2 years since I got the filling) I find myself getting a root canal. Can I please know exactly why my tooth got so sensitive, when, before the filling and discovery of the cavity, my tooth was absolutely fine (feeling wise). I feel as if the dentist I got my filling from did something wrong. That tooth was sensitive to hot and cold things from time to time, but I could survive. Was is a good choice to have got a root canal anyway? I am regretting having done this, and now I’m wondering if I really needed it. Thank you, Jessica
A. Teeth that have decay in them can often be symptom free. That is why dentists take Xrays to confirm that there is no hidden decay. When the decay is removed it can sometimes be close to the nerve of the tooth. When a filling is placed in this situation the nerve inside the tooth can still die and give you pain. It does not sound as though your dentist has done anything but the correct treatment for you and it is unfortunate tha the decay and bacteria had infected the nerve of your tooth

Q. #14 molar had cold and sweet sensetivity. USC Dental school removed decay close to pulp, pulled nerves, filled cavities, put temp crown. told there is no sign of infection. If nerves are already pulled why go to the proceedure and cost of full root canal , Why not return for full crown only, Cavity was deep soft dentin close to the pulp i believe was the cause of pain
A. Nerve removal is root canal treatment and is often carried out over a number of visits. If the infection has penetrated the nerve it can a while to to diagnose it completely.

Q. One of my 15 year old daughter’s front teeth is dark grey. Her dentist says it is as a result of bleeeding inside the tooth, but it is still alive and recommended tooth whitening (smile-x) on just that one tooth. The tooth is not stained; the discolouration has happened inside of the tooth and so I don’t see how whitening the outside of the tooth will help. Is there any method of possibly whitening the inside of t
he tooth? I do not want her to have veneers. What is your opinion? Thank you for your time.
A. You cannot have internal bleaching on a tooth that has not had root canal treatment. I recommend you have this tooth x-rayed and ask your dentist to do a pulp test. If the reason for the tooth discolouration is internal bleeding, the tooth is definately dead. In this case it need to have a Root Canal, you then can try internal bleaching.

Q. hi i had a root canal a week ago and my dentist found 3 out the 4 nerves had died? 4 days after the root canal it started to really hurt (like under the tooth)i went back on day 7 he said it was mildly infected and he put me on amoxicllin. he said i should still come back the next day for the cerec which i did. my tooth is really sore. my question is how long providing the infection goes should i expect to eat on it because at the moment a bannana is even out of the question. many thanks
A. They may be a number of reasons of why your tooth is still sore, including your bite and a possible infection inside of the tooth. Please book in with oyur dentist to explore further.

Q. I had gum contouring done 3 weeks ago. On Friday (3 days ago), my dentist relined my temporary to add more acrylic along the gum margin where tooth was exposed. He tried to adjust the tooth (which had been root canaled) and the bur hit the tooth. After that, he applied bonding material to the tooth before replacing the temporary. Now the tooth is sensitive. He inserted the cord on gum when he relined the temporary. Could the sensitivity be from the gum tissue? If a tooth that had been root canaled crack, will it be sensitive? I am afraid to ask him but I hope it did not crack.
A. IF the tooth has been successfully root treated you should not have temperature sensitivity. It might be from the gum, It is worth returning explain your sensitivity. Dont worry about getting it checked out.

Q. Hi there, I’m e-mailing from N. Ireland. After reading extensively regarding Veneers / Lumineers ( I have 2 crowns at the side of my front teeth). Firstly, before I start searching for a cosmetic dentist, what qualifications do I need to look out for ? Also, are Lumineers as good as a porcelain veneer and do they last as long. Also, If I need root treatment, fillings etc etc after having my lumineers/veneers fitted – can I go to my regular dentist to have this done – OR do I need to see a cosmetic dentist all the time thereafter ? Thank you so much
A. You need to find a good cosmetic dentist and have a consultation, lumineers are just one type of veneer and after a consultation you will know all the options. Try to find a dentist with a good reputation or a personal recommendation.

Q. i got hit in the mouth and now my front tooth is turning a purplish color.is there anything that can be done to the tooth to get the original color back.
A. You need to see a dentist and have an x-ray taken of the tooth it is highly likely the tooth will need root canal treatment and then could be whitened or crowned.
