Q. Hi, i had a brace when i was about 13 for 10 months and had to have some teeth removed to make space for them to straighten out, well i am now 20 and during the last couple of years i have started to grind my teeth, they have become sensitive and look awful my two front teeth are the worse one is shorther then the other and 3 of my bottom front teeth have been ground down aswell so all my back teeth are fine but when i bite my front teeth dont meet, what is the best way to sort this and least expensive? Thankyou so much
A. hi many thanks for your email, the best least expensive way to sort this out is rebuild the front teeth using white filling material and then invest in a nightguard so if you do grind your teeth at night it will be the nightguard which is ground away and not your teeth.
hope this is helpful.

Q. hello sir Dr.Solanki, got 2thoot missing and 1front thoot in bad cond.wish to fix them asap, but havnt got all the money,so want to ask if ist possible pay any deposit, then pay monthly?i com from cz,live here from 2005,have ni number, bank acc.reference from my provident loans.thank you very much for replay.
A. Thanks for your enquiry, at a lot of practices, it is possible to apply for finance to spread the cost of your treatment. At many practices this can even be interest free, as you have been resident in the United Kingdom for more than three years, you should be able to make an application. I would expect you to have to provide both a proof of address and a proof of signtaure but I foresee no problems in qualifying to make an application. I hope this helps. Many Thanks.

Q. I was born without incisor teeth but the eye teeth grew in where the incisors should be. On the left side there is no gap for an incisor to go and on the right side, the gap is very small. My incisor teeth are right next to my front teeth. How do I get these teeth when there is no room in my mouth? what are my options?
A. You need to have a consultation the options would either be closing the residual spaces or opening the spaces and then adding 2 new teeth.

Q. i currently have a false removable tooth in my front left tooth and my teeth are discolored! i wish to get my teeth whitened and my false front tooth made the same color as my teeth when there whitened. To do this i would have to have it replaced i assume. what are my options and what cost would this be?
A. Whitening the teeth will cost around £400. the replacement tooth could cost around £200 if it is a single tooth denture.

Q. Hi, I only have 1 back molar tooth on the bottom rear (the 1 behind it & ahead of it had to be extracted). Are there any problems down the road if I don’t do anything about it – or should I be getting a bridge? I’m told a bridge will run around $3,000.00 but that’s a lot of money! Please let me know if there would be any problems leaving it as is? Thank you!
A. Its always best to replace missing teeth despite the cost as not replacing teeth causes added stress on the other teeth

Q. Dear Dd Caplan I have a denture of 4 missing teeth 2 either side of the top mouth. Please can you tell me, would i be able to have a bridge placed or a crome denture would be best. Would you be able to help me.? Thank you
A. The 3 ways to restore missing teeth are with dentures, bridges and implants. There are a number of factors that would determine which of these options would be best for you. Please contact my surgery for an appointment when I would be able to find out which of these options I would recommend.

Q. Hi, Im 21 and I have had a root filling in my front tooth a while ago, which made it appear discoloured, i then decided to get my teeth whitened, before the treatment i asked my dentist if the whitening would work on the root filled tooth as this was the main reason for the treatment, he said he would whiten the tooth from the inside and fill it again, after doing this i went back for a follow up appointment where he replaced the filling again and added more whitening treatment, my tooth felt very thin after this that i didnt even think he had filled it yet, when i mentioned it felt very hollow he said he had filled it. On a 3rd follow up appointment he was going to replace the filling again until i mentioned i thought the whiteness of the tooth appeared “grainy” again, he THEN suggested getting a crown and to go away and think about it. Shouldnt this have been suggested in the beginning? I then noticed a crack appearing in my tooth from the inside and today while brushing my teeth the tooth has cracked off completely. I’m so upset as it looks awful. Is there something the dentist could do straight away as i couldnt face going into work with no tooth. thanks.
A. I am one of the few dentists in the country who could give you a new tooth within a few hours. Please ring my practice on 01727854429 to see if we can see you this week. I certainly understand your embarrassment but it is a very unusual situation for a front tooth to fracture like this unless there was a lot of decay present in the tooth before youre dentist started treatment.

Q. Hi there i have a tooth that is half missing! my dentist wants to do an extraction on it but i keep putting it off, it has started to hurt abit now! but if i go let my dentist extract the remaining tooth will there be any problems duing the extraction? where the tooth has brocken the gum has gone over the the broken part so i think that she is gonna have problems getting it i am more frieghtend of the dentist cutting my gum open! im am terified of going to the dentist ever since a dentist i used to go to messed up one of my teeth.
A.
It sounds as though you do need your tooth removed- please discuss your anxiety with your dentist as the problem of removing the tooth will only increase the more the decay is allowed to grow

Q. I had a crown than a root canal and now i have been told to extract or an implant or bridge or removable denture its my back tooth. I dont know what to do please help
A. If a root canal fails then you firstly have 2 options.
Option 1: Re root canal the tooth with a special Endodontist. The pro of this is that you are doing everything you possibly can to save you existing tooth. Cons are that it may be costly and is not guarenteed to work.
Option 2: Extract the tooth. Pro of this is that you are not investing any money into a tooth that may fail. The cons are that you will be left with a gap and will need to decide on how, if at all, you would like to restore this gap.
The option for a missing tooth are:
option 1: Leave the space. Th pro is that this is the cheapest option. Cons are that you have a space in you mouth and that eventually other teeth may fall into the gap and if it is only the lower jaw, the oposing tooth on the upper jaw my grown down into the space.
Option 2: Denture: This is the cheapest way to restore the gap. Cons are that it is removable and sometimes the plastic may be uncomfortable.
Option 3: A bridge: Pros are that it is a fixed restoration, therefore you will not be able to take it out. However the cons of this treatment are that bridges are very envasive as you have to corwn the teeth either side of the gap (which involves taking away tooth structure) retain the missing tooth. Bridges are advised to be changed every 10-15 years. As the price of a private bridge can be very similar to an Implant, if it is out of these two options an Implant would, without a doubt, be the best option.
Option 4: An Implant: Pros are that an implant is a fixed restoration that doesnt effect any of your other teeth. A titanium screw is implanted into your jaw and a porcelain crown is fixed on top. The cons are that this is the most expensive option with implants costing from £2500.00.
I hope this has help you in making a decision.

Q. My front 4 teeth are just fine on the top, however the rest on either side are either broken, decaying or missing. What would be my best bet with dentures? Partials, over dentures, or complete upper set?
A.
It a specific answer that needs a clinical assesment to answer properly. If you are not sure get a couple of dental opinions and decide which outcome best suits your teeth and lifestyle.

Q. Dear Dr Solanki, I hope that you can help me…. My Mother has always been plagued by dental problems for as long as I can remember, 15-16 years ago many of her front teeth were chipped decayed and rotten, she was scared stiff of the dentist but over time decided to go and get partial dentures fitted. She is now 70 years of age and her one remaining front tooth has just dropped out, she is happy to just leave it now, but it is my Sisters wedding next April, and she is upset that her mother will be toothless in the photos. My Mother is scared of visiting the dentist again, convinced nothing can be done and that it will be painful, and we can’t afford expensive implants or even to redo her dentures. Are there any economical temporary solutions that would be a Happy Compromise for my sisters big day? I would be very grateful if you could advise me. Happy New Year
A. hi, the best option would be to just add the missing tooth onto her existing dentures, the cost of which would be minimal £100 – £300 depednant on where you went. hope this is helpful.

Q. can a bridge be done if the tooth adjacent to the missing tooth has had a root canal done on it can a bridge be use to replace two consecutive missing teeth.
A. This depends on how strong the tooth is, you should also consider an implant as a potentially better long-term restoration

Q. Dear Sirs i wanted a bridge i could not afford one so the dentist suggested a valplas partial im wondering if this would work for me since im only missing 1 tooth and im wondering if it all come in one piece over the roof of the mouth and is this the only way a valplas can be made?
A. Hi
A valaplast denture is of benefit in some circumstances. There are variety of different type of dentures. It is very difficult to say which is the best approach in your individual case without looking at the mouth.
i would spaek to your dentist to get an idea of the design.

Q. Firstly i have a fear of Dentists and have not been to see A dentist for about ten years. I was wondering if its possible to have all my teeth taken out and have dentures fitted as i now have broken and missing teeth. Also could you tell me how much this would cost as im on a low income.
A. There are a number of dentists who offer sedation. Please seek these dentists out before committing to loosing all your teeth. With sedation you may be able to end up with a good result without having to wear full dentures for the rest of your life – there us no comparison between eating food with your own teeth compared to plastic teeth no matter how well the dentures are made. I am unable to give you an estimate for treatment without having your situation properly assessed.

Q. i am thinking about having all my teeth removed and replaced with implants i have a lot of problems with my teeth missing/sensetive/most teeth are either filled or crowned i would like your oppinion on this also considering going to somewhere like Goa India to have this treatment due to the costs i would appreciate your comments thank you
A. Implants replace missing tooth support. If you have tooth support that can be used I would tend to use it. You need a clinical examination to have a reasonable chance at answering this. Some practices such as ours offer a free assessment with a dentist to determine if its worth investigating further.
Contact Amy at the StJohns Practice 0121 643 0610 or www.e-dentalpractice.co.uk but mention the weblink
RE Goa, I would like to visit on holiday but wouldn’t recommend having a prolonged complex treatment like implants so far away. It’s a problem to get it fixed or fine tuned if you have to take a week of work & fly around India. Most of our cases take five or more visits. Also it is important that you use a reputable implant system that has lots of users that will continue to exist in years to come when you need maintenance. The cost of Astratech components ( the system that I trust to use on my patients ) is about the same worldwide, it’s the same for ITI, Straumann, Nobel Biocare, and all the main players and I see some prices quoted that you cant buy the components for. For these reasons I would just go for a holiday or save the money from the holiday & put it towards your treatment here, you may be surprised by the reasonable fees in the UK.

Q. When I was young I fell and knocked my 2 front teeth as a result I had an operation and the root of one of the teeth was removed. A few years later I has the tooth crowned and not long after I got an infection in the roof of my mouth. An x-ray showed that this infection was going right from the crown up into the palet of my mouth, the specialist told me I need ot have an operation to remove the infection but I have had bone removed during my first operation which I was not aware of and there is a 50/50 chance I could lose the tooth during or not longer after the operation. What would be my best option if I do lose the tooth? Would a dental implant be suitable? And whatever the necessary treatment can you give me an idea of the price I would be looking at?
A. If I understand it correctly you have one tooth completely missing and one root just about surviving.
The points I notice here are the past history of trauma, infection and surgical bone removal. It is probable that the lifetime chances of the remaining tooth surviving are risky.
An implant will need some healthy bone to anchor it and the past trauma/infection/surgery will have reduced the available bone. You would need to check this out with a thorough clinical exam maybe a CT jaw scan. One implant costs around £2000 -2500 including the crown on top ( You will be able to find a range of practices within this bracket and this figure is from start to finish ) One implant carrying two crowns around £3000-3500 two implants with single crowns £4000-5000. If you don’t have enough bone, you may need a bone graft which has a very variable cost. Bridges, Adhesive bridges, & dentures would be among the alternatives
I hope this helps

Q. Dear Dr Komal Suri. I am a 48 year old woman and have two teeth missing on the upper top 5 and 6. i currently wear a denture plate which i detest. When I go out socialising i feel I have no confidence in talking to people male and female. I tried bridge work a couple of year ago but got a phobia with it and had to have it taken out. Since then I have worn a denture. Please help me.
A. Have you considered implants. These are titanium roots that are placed into your jaw and a crown is made to go on top of them.
This is normally the best treatment to replace the missing teeth. The treatment takes approximately 9 months as there is a 4-6 month integrating time for the implant.
If you are interested in this treatment you need to have a consultation with an implant dentist so that you can see whether you are suitable for your treatment.
Kind Regards

Q. I have had my two top front teeth removed ,what is the alternative to dentures,as i only have one tooth to the right of the gap.
A. Thank you for your question
The best thing to replace missing teeth are implants. You can have implants to replace individual teeth or you can have a couple of implants replacing 3 or 4 teeth. Implants can also be used to retain dentures. I advise that you have a consultation with an implant dentist to find out your options for implant treatment.
