Will I have to go private to get braces?

Q. hi there im 20 yrs old and i have a gap between my two front teeth on the top row. and either side i have two teeth missing as i never got my second teeth, they never came thru. and have been told id have to pay 4 a brace privatley. is there no way id be able to pay it off in instalments as i think a brace is very exspensive, and i do not work i am a full time mum. i think i should be able to have it on the nhs as its not my fault about my teeth.,

A. I am sorry to hear about your situation, but as this wasn’t addressed at a younger age, then you’re right, you will need to pay for your treatment privately.(as you’re over 18 now) Braces can be quite expensive, but many clincs offer payment schemes and finance to make the treatment more affordable. As you mentioned that your side teeth didn’t come through when you were younger, the perhaps braces aren’t the right treatment- as bringing all the teeth together to close the gaps may make your smile appear unsymmetrical as the right teeth aren’t in the right place. Ideally, you need to discuss all of your options with a cosmetic dentist to see what the best results can be. You may need to have alternative treatment such as implants in the areas where your teteh didn’t come through to restore your smile to its best potential. Good luck. Do crowns come in different shades?

Q. Hi, I have just had my front tooth crown replaced after about 5 years. My dentist informed me that the non-metal crowns which appear more natural are not avaiable on the NHS, is that correct. Also the new crown that I have had fitted is an off white colour, where as my other natural front tooth is much whiter, do the crowns come in different shades. Thanks,

A. The basic colour of a dental crown is matched to a shade guide of around 16 – 24 colours . Depending on the quality of the crown a larger range is achieved by blending colours and varying the colour within a single crown , effects can be also be added to blend with natural imperfections on adjacent teeth The NHS does not specify the appearance of a crown only that is is suitable for functioning. What is the difference between NHS and private dentist crowns?

Q. Hi. My dentist has just suggested that I have my six bottom front teeth crowned as I have weakened tooth enamel and there appearance isn’t very good. Not suprisingly this occured after I filled in a survey saying that I was not happy with my teeth. He suggests going private as I would get better crowns but the rest of my teeth are not great and I don’t want them to stick out. I also want all my teeth to look whiter. Is there really such a difference between private and nhs crowns? My dentist says that I can only have two nhs crowns a year, is that true?,

I cannot afford NHS dental treatment but what can be done?

Q. hi i really hope you can help me i had an accident when i was young and lost four of my front teeth. since then i have had drowns which have been fine until now. over the last couple of years i have had a problem with one tooth in particular it keeps falling out because the remaining tooth is damaged. i have seen at least 6 different nhs dentists who are reluctant to help and send me to private dentists who want to charge me a fortune! i would just like to be seen by a cofident and competent dentist who can give me the right advice and treatment. i have ssen one dentist who was prepared to do the extraction of the damaged tooth and th eroot treatment to the tooth next to it but they are ceasing to exist before my treatment can be done! i dont know where to turn or what is the best treatment for me can i have an implant or a bridge on the nhs?,

What treatment can I have for chipped tooth?

Can I possibly get implants on the NHS?

Q. Hi i am 42 when i was 12 i had all but the top front 6 teeth out and the bottom 6 when i smile i have large gaps either side my top 2 front ones are crowns and one is causing a lot of pain since having a operation on it to fill the root my wisdom teeth are all there and i was wondering if implant are posible as i am very self con when smiling and if were pos to get on nhs,

A. Implants are not possible on NHS. Many private clinics offer finance to spread the costs.

Will denture on the NHS be of similar quality if done privately?

A. NHs dentures will have a certain quality that could generally be improved upon with private treatment, depending on who makes them for you

Can I get implants on the NHS as I am unemployed?

Q. i only have about 10 teeth in my hole mouth.i can only eat on 1 side as i have no teeth on the other which causes alot of problems.would i be considerd for or get dental implants on nhs.i am unimployed.,

A. Dental implants are only provided o the NHS in very extreme cases- such as people who have been involved in severe trauma to the face- and also people who never actually had any teeth when developing. Otherwise, implants are usually offered privately. If you have lost your own teeth due to poor oral hygiene etc, expect to pay for implants- approx £2500 each.There are other options- such as dentures that are a good and less expensive option.

Q. Hi Rob, Want to know if i can get crowns done on the front of my teeth. Have been to see my dentist who wants to just do a scale and polish.I asked if she could do anything with my front teeth as i feel they look awful and find it very upsetting she said that it was not worth it or would be to expensive. I’m on the nhs so am i able to get the treatment or would i have to go private. I feel at breaking point. Many thanks for any advice you can give,
