Q. Dear Dr. Moore, I have four crowns (in the front in the top rig)that are now showing a black line and so need replacing with Porcelain ones, but also my gum is quite dark and not pink. Is it possible to change the posts that are in the gum, or is it possible to lighten the gum in any way? Thank you for your help! Regards
A. Hello the gum can’t really be changed but the posts might be taken out and replaced with White posts and porcelain crowns

Q. I just had a 6 unit full porcelain bridge placed in December of 2009, I just noticed a very tiny chip in between my two front teeth. Is this repairable?
A. Thanks for your question, it is possible that the dentist would be able to repair the chip without removing the bridge.
Many Thanks

Q. I have had 4 porcelain veneers done in Sept 2009 on my front teeth and wish I hadn’t now as have had problems in that after the permanent ones were placed on one came off after 3 days as it appears I grind my teeth at night. I know the veneers are slightly longer that original teeth which i didn’t agree too and so now everytime i talk, they ‘catch’ with the bottom teeth. I am concerened this catching will lead to other falling off prematurely so want them altered so they are same length as original teeth. Will there be damage to underlying teeth if these veneers are taken off to be replaced?
A. They can be replaced without causing problems but the first thing to do is go back to your dentist and see if the bite can be adjusted. You may benefit from a nightguard that can reduce grinding.

Q. Do you still need tooth shaving (interproximal reduction)with the inman aligners?
A. Thanks for your question, it is not always necessary to have Interproximal Reduction when having the Inman aligner treatment. The need for reduction would depend on the amount of space available between the teeth. I hope this helps, but please do not hesitate to contact me again if you require any further information.

Q. Hi, Dr. Glaister: Dentist said I had a vertical crack in my lower left molar (tooth number 18) in the back of the tooth. It doesn’t hurt although sometimes I feel sensitivity when I chew. He said I should have a crown. I heard the cheapest crown is a resin composite. What is the life expectancy of that kind of crown and can it be done quickly in one visit? Is it different than a metal or porcelain crown in
that they don’t have to grind your teeth?
A. You have to reduce the tooth surface for every type of crown. I recommend you visit your dentit to see what he can offer you in terms of materials and costs.
Kind regards

Q. Hi i am wanting to ask my four front teeth seem to be eroding quite quickly i have suffered acid reflux but am now on medication and this seems to have calmed down do you think this is because of reflux that my teeth have gone like this? and if so is there any way to sort this out.Kind regards.
A. Reflux causes strong acids to break the teeth down you could have tooth coloured material or porcelain placed over the teeth to strengthen and protect them.

Q. As a recovered bulimia sufferer, the enamel on the back of my 4 front teeth is eroded. I was wondering if the best option would be to get porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns? thank you.
A. Porcelain veneers or crowns are probably the best option sometimes tooth coloured fillings can be stuck on your teeth.

Q. I had porcera crowns fitted in india about year ago but I have slight chips on the edges caused I think by grinding my teeth. Could these chips be repaired? Thank You.
A. Sometimes they can be repaired but it is highly likely they will re chip, one option is to have them replaced but ensure your dentist looks at your bite you may need to wear a bite guard at night.

Q. I have a front gold crown tooth about 18 years and i would like to have it remove from my tooth. I had x-rays done last year and i have no tooth decay. Should i have the crown just removed and use teeth whiting or have them bleach?
A.
When the gold crown is taken off it will need to be replaced with a porcelain crown that will be matched into the rest of your teeth. If you are not happy with the shade of your teeth then you could whiten them first and then have the crown made to match the new shade of your teeth.
Kind regards

Q. I have recently had six crowns fitted on the NHS,which are a combination of metal fused to porcelain. My crowns are too long and ‘cut’ into my bottom lip.I asked the restorative dentist at the time to reduce the length, but he refused. I have been left feeling very self-concious. Is it possible if i went privately,to a cosmetic dentist,to reduce the length or will this crack or split the crown?
A. This may crack or split the crown but this is unlikely if water coolant is used. I often recontour osrcelain but would be wary as these crowns were made on the NHS and would not be sure of the support of the porcelain by the underlying metal

Q. Hello, When I was younger I fell over and chipped my front tooth in half. It was capped. After a few years it fell out and I went for more dentistry work. The dentist pretty much ground the tooth down to a little stump and then bonded a cap to the tooth. He said it will last a few years and so far has been in for a good 8 years with no signs of movement. I am unhappy with the tooth as it is rather grey in comparison to the other teeth… my friend has a cap on the same tooth and his is greyish also. Unfortunately I smoke but am planning on quitting in the near future. I have made my mind up on getting the cap replaced and was wondering on the options available. I would love a fancy cap… if not solid silver at least the outer edge silver and the rest white matching the rest of my teeth. I wore braces as a kid and my teeth are straight. When I went to mexico I noticed a lot of the guys had the gold outer rimmed caps and thought they look rather nice as they aren’t as much as a solid metal tooth. Could you please give me a rough estimation on how much a metal cap would cost and the options available to me. I am after it having a silver outer edge if that makes any sense? Look forward to hearing from you Kind regards
A. Private crowns typically cost 300-800
we charge £420 for gold based crowns in the design of your choice.

Q. I got a porcelain fused to metal crown about 5 months ago and I have a couple of questions. I was looking at it today and I saw this white line between where the metal and porcelain meet. What is that? Also there is a black horizontal line in the middle of my crown on the porcelain part. It isn’t at the gum line, what could this be? Also how long does it take a crown like this to adjust because my gums are still sensitive around it? Thanks!
A. I’m not sure what these lines are without seeing it. Perhaps you should go back to your dentist for him to check it as it should have settled down by now.

Q. Dr. Moore, A year ago, I had a composite filling put into my front tooth. A few days ago, the bottom part of the tooth broke off in two places and the composite filling from the front remaining part to the top has come out completely; leaving only a thin part of my real tooth behind. Is this tooth salvagable for a crown?
A. Without seeing you I can’t tell for sure but it is usual for a there to be still enough tooth for a crown even after a breakage.

Q. Hiya, i had an operation on my gum a few years back which left me with a gap at the front of my mouth, this happened due to a mistake made during the operation? since this happened i have been very subconscious about my teeth as they are in quite a bad state. Who should i contact about this? im looking for a solution, possibly veneers. Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon.
A. Gaps around the gum level can be disguised using crowns or veneers. Obviously the underlying health of your gums is important to be correct prior to providing these types of restorations. At Aviva Cosmetic Dentistry we have a wealth of experience in dealing with smile porblems such as these. Please contact my practice for a free cosmetic consultation.
