Please compare different cosmetic treatment for my dental issues.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Hi, I am desperate! I had to have my top teeth removed about 16 months ago due to absess’s and severe infection. Previously had very healthy teeth. I had some gold crown at the bottom which sheared off so a few bottom teeth were removed prior to the top. My dentist used a sedative on me to remove my teeth but with awful consequences, I am allergic. Was ill with low BP for 3 weeks after. He made me a new set of dentures 6 months after removal. They did not fot. He told me to glue them in! He then made me a new set last April. The bottom set did not line up so he threw them straight in the bin and just gave me the top set. They do not fit they rock and fall out if I yawn or anything. He told me to glue them in. I only have the bottom 6 teeth nearest the front of my own. My face in now older looking, I can not eat only soggy or mashed food. I have not eaten meat now for 16 months. I am very depressed with it. I am only 54 years old. That dentist has now left the practice and a young new one has taken his place. She said she would make me a new set. but then questioned when I last had a set and accused ME of binning them. I am not a wealthy person so had to have a NHS set last time. I have an awfull gag reflux so taking impressions is horredouse to me. I am on disability benefits due to medical problems, e.g. Anaphylatic, svere allergys, Asthma to name but a few. Now she says I have severe oral thrush so she can not make any dentures, and I should make an appointment some time in the future. I am really sad and do not know what I should do. What would it cost me if I tried to save up to get it sorted properly? What can I do ?

A. The costs vary private dentures range from £600-1200 for a full set, implant retained dentures about £5000 per jaw ( very very roughly) There is a potential issue regarding the stability of your jawbone and hence the fit of dentures if your weight / general health is fluctuating. Hope this helps Rob

Due to grinding I have gum receeding and loosing my smile.

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q. Dear Dr Tennet, For as long as I can remember I have suffered from bruxism. I sleep with a nightguard which my NHS dentist made for me but my gums seem to be receeding as a result of the grinding, which I think has now led to gum disease, and my upper anterior teeth are becoming very thin and I’m terrified of them snapping off altogether. I’m only 27 and hate my smile. My teeth seem to be wearing down and decaying very quickly and I’m terrified of having to wear a denture. Do you think crowns and possibly gum grafts may help me? I really don’t want to lose my teeth and my NHS dentist doesn’t seem to care.

A. Wear, tooth decay and receeding gums are normally caused by separate problems. It is likely that advanced treatment planning is needed. I can offer a free initial chat at our private practice to assess the likely way forward.Rob0121 643 0610

Q. My top teeth stick out i want them to go back but with out braces

A. You would need to investigate restorative options , reduce the teeth with a drill then realign with crowns or veneers. Rob

Q. I had back tooth problems. there was hole on my back teeth. it was extream pain. i went to dentiest and did the amalgam filing on that and that i got much more pain on it. i cant bite anything. next day dentist said that i got infection and he gave amoxicillin. and he said that i need to do crown on it. can you please tell me what to do. it herts me a big time.

A. It sounds like the tooth either needs to be extracted or the nerve removed if you are in severe pain. Pop back to your dentist and see what they can do

After root filling I have dark line on the gum please advise.

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009
Q. 2 months ago I had my teeth all made into crowns. Where I have a couple of implants and a root filling, there is now a dark line at the gum line. I have told my dentist about it and he says I should brush my teeth and make them bleed. I got a firm toothbrush and have scrubbed these gums and they will not bleed and the dark is still there. Also one of the teeth above these implants and root filling is very sensitive to cold and sometimes if anything hard gets into it it hurts. Because I am 68 years of age and went to the dentist for my teeth to be straightened, a decision was made by the dentist that I was too old for my teeth to be successfully straightened and that it would take a long time, that is why I have a mouthful of crowns. Is there anything I can do to make this ddark line around these 3 teeth disappear?

A. You need to discuss this with your dentist – the implants are made out of titanium and can be difficult to mask if you have thin gums – gums can be thick or thin – this is called their biotype.

Please suggest the best option for my dental issue.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009
Q. Hi, my front teeth were not straight with the front of my mouth. this has been a problem for over 30 years. 12 months ago i asked the dentist to crown my 4 front teeth so they would look nice, now one tooth is loose and i,m looking at dental implant. do you visit any other part of the country? i live in northampton. will i have a gap until the implant is complete.(this is my biggest fear) can the proceedure be done over a short period of time? all i want is to smile. people think i’m unhappy because i never smile. can you help?

A. I would always try to remove the tooth and fit the implant at the same time. I’m afraid I don’t work in your area but would be very happy to see you at my clinic in Chelmsford Essex

What material is NHS crown made of and is it better than the private crown?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009
Q. Hi , just wondered what the crowns look like on the nhs ?? compared to a private crown ? are they white ? i have heard rumors they are not . can you help ?? thanks

A. Back crowns on the NHS may need to be made of a silver/gold material. Front crowns can ususally be made of porcelain but check with your dentist

Does tooth get damanged while taking out the crown?

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. Hi,My dentist recommended to do crown for my front teeth but unfortunate;y the teeth doesn’t match the colour of my teeth and the shape of the teeth is round and my one is straight ,my dentist will take the teeth out but i am worried that by taking the crown out my real teeth under the crown will get damaged or broken what is your advise what to do regards

A. Some damage can occur if the old crown is removed.  However if this is done carefully the damage will be minimal and is unlikely to affect the life of your tooth

Is sub-standard material used for making dental bridges?

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. Hello, I had a bridge fitted in April.Yesterday I bit a piece of sellotape off the roll and as a result a piece chipped off the bottom of my tooth. My dentist said I need a new bridge, I was told that bridges are only guaranteed for 3 months, I thought that fillings, crowns etc were guaranteed for 12 months. I had a bridge previously for 12 years with no problems (also using my teeth on Sellotape). This makes me wonder if the materials used are sub-standard as I have done nothing extreme to warrant the damage.

A. In these situations you do need to go back to your dentist with your concerns.  There is no standard guarantee for dental work.  Using your teeth whether they are natural or made by a dentist should ideally only be used for eating food as using them to break cello-tape etc can produce a surprisingly high force on the material.  the bridge may be able to be repaired

Can I smile again with a crooked teeth and gum recession?

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. I am 55 and have discloured crooked teeth with recession of gums due to long standing disease. I really want to smile. Is it possible to help me with crowns/veneers?

A. This is often a great solution to aesthetic issues following stabilization of the gum health.  Once they have been fitted it will be very important to see the hygienist 3 monthly to keep the periodontal disease under control.  Please come and see me for a free consultation for me to give you a more informed view

Sugar consumption has ruined my teeth please suggest a treatment.

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. Hello, I am 16 and have been so scared to smile all my life. I have always had issues with my teeth. At the moment my top teeth are all slightly separated (especially my top 2 ones) and my bottom 2 teeth have decayed and are rotting because of drinking soft drinks. They have even gotten to the point where they are starting to chip off. The bottom two ones have black blotches in them and it makes me feel very unconfident with smiling. I have good dental hygiene in the sense that i floss and brush 2 times daily using a soft brush, but i have ruined my teeth with the amount of sugar i have consumed over the years. What dental procedure would you recommend that could possibly fix my issue to have a beautiful smile?

A. If you have got tooth destruction then I would recommend the minimal amount of remaining tooth be removed.  In this situation porcelain restorations usually will give you the best result.  Please contact my practice for a free cosmetic consultation.

My temporary filling has chipped should I be concerned?

Monday, November 30th, 2009
Q. Hi, I had been given a temporary filling about 6 months ago and I am due to have the permanent filling done in a couple of weeks. However, the other night the same tooth (near back of mouth) partially chipped/cracked on the inside edge of the tooth, exposing some of the temporary filling. There is no pain but my question is, should this be of some concern to me given I am about to have a filling, and is the enamel able to be bonded back to the tooth or if not, what procedure, if any, is likely to take place? Many Thanks

A. Most likely the dentist will be able to restore your tooth with a filling.  However you may need a crown or an onlay later.

My porcelain teeth has broken twice what could be the cause?

Friday, November 27th, 2009
Q. I have a dental implant on my front tooth. the porcelain tooth has broken twice, once biting on an apple and lastly biting on a provita cracker. the metal part of the implant did not move and x-rays show it’s still totally inplace (I had bone graft taken from hip 1 year prior to implant placement) My question is could it be due to poor quality porcelain? what else can cause it to break in half widthwise twice? should I avoid biting on any hardish food in future? I do not grind my teeth at night. There is no stress pressure apparent from biting down against lower teeth. It’s a bit of a mistery to my dentist too!

A. It may be a material issue but it is likely be due to a bite issue – especially in lateral movement

Need the cause and solution for my overbite issue?

Friday, November 27th, 2009
Q. Dear Experts, I have had 2 front teeth replaced by crowns and implants as a result of an accident. Unfortunately there are some discoloring at the top of the crowns where it meet the gumline which is unsightly. What can be done to rectify this? Also, it may sound silly, but it feels as if my teeth are too short and the bite is all wrong. My jaw and jaw muscles gets really sore when I close my mouth, trying to rest the top and bottom jaw on each other. So as a result, trying to compensate for the pain, I try and rest it on the front teeth. Unfortunately, then it creates an uncomfortable, clenching overbite. It is a very uncomfortable and painful situation and I would appreciate advice on how to correct this.

A. Firstly the crown may need replacing to correct the aesthetic problem. The bite problem is more complex and will need thorough investigation and teatment, perhaps involving a bite guard worn at night and the possible correction of the crowns.

Can my previous bridges be reused?

Friday, November 27th, 2009
Q. I lost 3 front teeth in an auto accident 16 years ago. At that time the dentist made crowns for adjoining 5 teeth in the form of a bridge. The bridge has now let go due to decay of (what used to be) healthy natural teeth and I am wanting implants. In this day and age of recycling, reusing and renewing, can my bridge not be retro-fitted for the implants??? Alot of $$$ went into them originally, I find it hard to believe that they cannot be reused.

A. No its a ciustom fitted device so the bridge won’t be used again

My bite is changed after having crown fitted should I be concerned?

Thursday, November 26th, 2009
Q. Hello. I have just had my crown fitted to a lower back tooth. The crown feels a little ‘raised’ and i can’t get the same ‘biting’ feel with my teeth i had prior to it being fitted today. I told my dentist afterwards and he said i should give it time to bear down and settle down. I hope this is true as at the moment it feels odd when i bite down and when i eat. Should i be concerned or just wait a day or two? Many thanks

A. I would wait 3-4 days it should settle in without too many problems.
