Enquiries on dental consultations

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Q. Hi My two front teeth protude outwards whilst my incisors next to them also but only slightly. This causes an overbite as the top and bottom jaws dont match up. I have no gaps and was wondering if the Inman aligner or 6 month smile will fix the overbite enough to stop the overlapping. Obviously, I would need a consultation which i dont mind but is there the optiom of free initial consultation so I have an idea of prices and what options are available at your clinic?? Thanks

A. Hi,

Please contact my treatment co-ordinator Gina at gina@umbrellasmiles.com as she deals with my appointment book.

What is an alternative for a dental bridge?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Q. As a child I had two of my front teeth removed at a dental college as they told me I needed a brace to correct my bite. I had the teeth removed and the brace fitted which didnt have the result the wanted. My current dentist and previous dentist have told me that my teeth did not need any correction as it was a slight overbite. I didnt have any further treatment as I had very bad experiences. I now have two bridges at the front and would like an alternative. What would you suggest? Many Thanks

A. The alternative to a bridge is an impant. An impant would be placed where the gaps are and the other teeth that have been preped to hold the bridges would have to be replaced with single crowns.

You may want to consider having nicer bridges placed if it is just the appearence you are unhapy with.

I recommend that you book in to see a cosmetic dentist and an Implantologist to explore which option is right for you.

What is the reason for pain in the teeth?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Q. I have toothache in my left front tooth. They were sensitive and I am using the sensodyne pro-namel toothpaste which was gradually making the problem better over time. However a few days ago toothache started in my left front tooth and the sensitivty has almost completely gone away in just the last 2 days since the toothache started. The tooth hurts when i put any small pressure onto it and has grown from mild pain from time to time to constant mild pain. What is wrong and what should I do?

A. You need to go and se a dentist to see if the tooth has decay or is being irritated by the position of the bite.

What treatment is best suited for a young with mild overbite?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Q. My 14 year old son has a mild underbite. What treatments are available to correct it. I’m fairly sure that wearing braces would be something of an uphill struggle!

A. With underbites the first treatment of choice is orthodontics. However your son needs to be motivated to clean his brace properly to prevent gum disease and tooth decay whilst he is undergoing treatment.  For a boy of 14 I would not recommend other forms of treatment.

Do braces really correct a bad bite?

Q. Do braces really correct a bad bite? Thanks

A. They can do but you often need your teeth equilibrated to fine tune your bite at the end of treatment

Can braces correct jaw profile?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Q. well ok im going to get braces but i need to know if it will correct my chin since when i smile it sticks out and gives my face a long look..is it possible for the the braces to fix this. because when i was a kid my dentist told me to smile and said that i would need brace to fix my chin…oh and i have no over bite or underbit i think..my teeth are on top of each other when the bottom should be a little behind the top. right?..so can you help me with this question. if you need any more info ask please..thanks for your time

A.

The braces may adjust your profile but it really depends on if it is possible to move your bottom jaw back slighly without causing any bit issues. I recommend that you ask your orthodontist whether the jaw position will change or stay the same.

If you would like a second opinion, i can recommend my colleague, Dr Darsh Patel.

What are the better adhesives that can secure crown and post?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Q. I have a front top central tooth fitted with a crown with post, I had it fitted many years ago but recently the post bent forcing the tooth forward. I’m told by my dentist this was because of my overbite. He removed the crown & post and made me a new one. The new crown & post will now not stay in for longer than a few days, even though I’m not biting on it. Are there more expensive / better adhesives that could be used to secure it?

A. I guess he would have use the best cement unless this is the temporary tooth placed before the new one is made.

How to correct an overbite without braces?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Q. I have an overbite and want to know how to correct the problem without braces. I wore braces back in 2001 thru 2003 and now I have a terrible overbite that has changed my total appearance. I was thinking maybe veneers? Can you give a response to this problem, Doc…Thanks…

A. It depends how much of an overbite you have as to whether it can be corrected as a slight overbite is normal.

If it can be corrected it will be with orthodontics (braces) and not Veneers. Veneers can change the shape, colour and size of your teeth but unfortunately cannot change your bute.

Can a underbite be corrected?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Q. Hello, I have a slight underbite & I am 14. I am very, very self consisous about it & really want surgery to correct it. Would the orthodontis allow me to have it corrected at 14?

A. If your bite is how I imagine it to be, it is very unlikely that your Orthodontist would recommend surgery until you are at least 18-19 yeras old as the jaw continues to grow until that age.

I had braces years back but my overbite came back advice?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Q. Hi There, I had braces when I was a young teenager to close the gap between my two front teeth and get rid of my overbite. The gap has gone but my overbite came back (due to not wearing my retainer when I was younger). I would now like to get this corrected, but don’t particularly want to get one of the regular train track braces, and cannot afford to pay thousands of pounds for the other treatments. Are there any alternatives?

A. The coices you have are moe convential metal braces or clear braces such as invisalign.  As as adult the cost of this treatment will be in the region of £3K to £4K.

How can underbite and overbite be treated and how feasible is invisalign?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Q. I didn’t want braces when I was younger, but now have teeth that are too big and crowded for my mouth. I am now 24 and have both and overbite and underbite. My middle two top teeth (bunny teeth) have pushed forwards even further and one is now crossing over the other due to lack of space. I find it very difficult to close my mouth, which makes eating, talking and sleeping difficult (I sleep on my face to keep my mouth shut so I can breathe properly). Where I am stretching my jaw to close my mouth, I am getting pains in my neck and ears and I would like to get my teeth fixed before things get any worse. My teeth are fairly straight and otherwise healthy, but too far forwards in varying degrees. I have had all four wisdom teeth removed this year. I work full time in an office and having a metal brace would make my job very difficult (I have to talk to clients) as I alerady find it difficult to talk. I am therefore considering getting invisalign to pull my teeth back. Could you give me more information on this. What is involved, roughly how much is it likely to cost and how long will it take to work? Will it make talking more difficult as a metal brace would?

A. Invisalign is a very user friendly brace as it can be taken out and is practically invisible. You can use Invisalign for many types of crowding. Costs vary but our fees start from £2500 to include all your aligners and follow up visits every 4-6 weeks. Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Q. Hi. Im 21 years old. My dentist will not put me forward for a brace. But i think i need 1 as i have got an over-bite and my front teeth are really crooked. I was just wondering if there is anyway to get a brace? I cant afford to go private though so it would have to be NHS. Do you no how i could do this if my dentist will not forward to me an orthodontist? Thanks

A. The NHS is very restrictive as far as adult orthodontics and your only route is probably privately

can u suggest an alternative for night guard?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Q. Hi,I have recently been told by my dentist that the damage to my teeth is caused by grinding during the night. This is evident as i have very bad wear on my two front teeth. They are a lot shorter than my other top teeth and have formed an arch shape. It has got to the stage where people are noticing and i am reluctant to smile.I have been given a night guard to wear but i feel my teeth need to be treated with caps or veneers as well as the further protection that the guard will give, what do you recommend?

A. It depends on how severe your bite and grinding habits are.  You may well require a combination of veneers and crowns if other teeth in your mouth are also worn.  A night guard would be required after treqtment to protect your new smile

Can u gimme some information about why my lower jaw goes to the right?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Q. Hiya, im 21 and have recently noticed that my lower jaw goes to right. I never really noticed it until it was mentioned to me about 6 months ago. I have tried looking on the net but all i can find is info on overbites, and nothing regarding anyone with there jaw going to the right. Best regards

A. This can be caused by asymmetirical growth of your jaw sometimes caused by trauma at a young age. If your teeth fit together corectly, the upper teeth being on the outside of the lower teeth the chin can be reshaped to improve the appearance by a plastic surgeon. I the teth do not fit together properly you may be able to have youtr jaw broken and repositioned correctly.

Is braces or jaw surgery good for overbites?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Q. Hello! I have an underdeveloped lower jaw, which results as a level 3 overbite. (As I’m told by the orthodontist.) She recommended braces for me, to prepare for jaw surgery. I am hesitant at the mention of jaw surgery, and was wondering if my overbite could be fixed with just braces? As a contrast, my regular dentist if very much opposed to me having the jaw surgery, so I am faced with two very different opinions. I am a 16 year old female. Thank you!

A. I cannot assess your situation as I would need to view the Xrays taken and examine your problem – sorry

what is the best treatment for class 2 overbite

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

Q. hello, ive been told that i have class 2 overbite which makes my face look smaller when close teeth which never do plus my bootom teeth point backwards which makes my bottom lip look bit sunken does not alaign with top which i would really like it to would really appreciate your advise of what to do thankyou

A. The best way to treat this problem is with braces, usually a removable brace followed by a fixed brace to reposition the teeth and the bite. You would also need retainers to stop the teeth  moving back to the original position once completed.

Ive an overbite so could I get veneers instead of surgery

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Q. I have an overbite and my teeth are crooked, I had an appointment with an orthodontist and was told that I needed surgery to be . I’m 16 and somewhat scared of the surgery, but my dad also refuses to have surgery done on me. My question is: Could I get veneers instead of surgery I need to have my teeth straightened?

A. The crowding must be very severe if surgery is required so I doubt that vebneers will be a solution. Maybe ask for a second opinion from another Orthodontist to see if its pssible to try something else.
