How is TMJ diagnosed? Do I see my dentist or a neurologist?

Friday, August 7th, 2009
Q.
I have been suffering from neck pain and vertigo symptoms (headaches, dizziness and nausea) since early May 2009. It was first thought that I had an inner ear infection however, due to the severity of neck and shoulder pain, it was thought that it may be delayed onset of whiplash following a car accident (rear collision) at the end of March. I have seen a physiotherapist and acupuncturist whose treatment of whiplash has proved ineffective and has not yielded longterm results. In the meantime I have developed a problem with my teeth; I cannot bite properly without making a loud squeaking noise. My jaw is tense and clicks. I pointed this out to my dentist when having a wisdom tooth removed and she agreed that this was not normal and said that she would refer me to a specialist. Having read up on this I am confident that I have TMJ, which has developed/been exacerbated by whiplash. My question to you is therefore this: how is TMJ diagnosed? Do I see my dentist or wait for a neurologist appointment?

My daughter is not happy with metal brace what are the alternatives

Friday, August 7th, 2009
Q.
My teenage daughter has been accepted for nhs treatment to have fitted braces. However, after years of being bullied and miserable because of her crooked, prominent teeth she is noe mortified at the thought of having a mouth full of metal. We asked if we could have a white upper brace and pay the difference but we were told that this was not possible and it would mean us paying the full cost of treatment £2300 we cannot afford to do this. Someone informed me that a gps letter stating that the metal one would have neg impact on her well-being would help. Is all of this info correct? would we have to pay the full amount? Thanks

How does braces work on my small peg tooth?

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009
Q.
Hiya, im nearly 16 years of age and i am due to get my braces fited in about 3weeks time. the reason in which i am getting the braces is because i have a small peg tooth at the front of my teeth in which i am really self concious about and my dentist said that in order to build the tooth up she is going to have more room to do so; however there are other issues. i am very concerned about getting braces as most ofmy friends have already had them removed and i am the only one. when the brace is preparing room for the peg tooth to be built up am i going to have a larger gap there on show or can my dentist build this tooth up as the ortadontic treatment progresses? and how exactly does the building up of a tooth work?

One of my tooth is pushed back, is it right to have veneers at this situation

Monday, August 3rd, 2009
Q.
I wore a fixed brace two years ago and since then one tooth had pushed back just a little. I went to an orthadontist who quoted a price of £2,800 for the treatment. do you think this is a reasonable quotation? i want to emphasise that my tooth hasn’t moved that much!! also i was talking to a friend who had some veneers in and thought the world of them. is this a situation where i could possibly consider just a veneer on the tooth to give the impression that it’s straight?
