My dentist is closing my missing teeth gaps with braces but I want dental implants. What should I do?

Friday, November 4th, 2011
Q.

Hello there, I would like a second opinion on my orthodontic treatment! When I was 10 years old I extracted my first molar/left lower jaw as it was so decayed, the empty socket, overtime shrinked and caused my face to be uneven! When I was 17 years old, I had to remove the rest of the First molars (upper left/upper right/lower right) because of decay! Today I am 22 years old and I can notice that I am starting to age prematurely as the gaps from the molar extractions are starting to shrink, causing my face to lose its structure, hollow eyes, “collapsing face ” kind of effect so I was thinking to have bone graft (as I lost serious bone) and then dental implants. But there is one small problem! I started my orthodontic treatment 1 year ago, for a severe malocclusion from where I will have to have jaw surgery to complete the treatment. At the start of the treatment I mentioned to my orthodontist I would like to keep the (molar extraction) gaps open so I can have dental implants but at my appoiment yesterday she said she wants to close the gaps and that’s what we’ve been doing all along during the treatment. I don’t feel is a good idea as my teeth and jaw are very small anyway and I’m scared this will make it even worse../Plus looking in the mirror and seeing my face changing I don’t like what I see/aging prematurely. Now, my questions are: Is it a good idea for my orthodontist to close the gaps? If it’s not, with orthodontic treatment is she able to stretch the gaps back to original shape so I can have the dental implants? If yes, will I be able to have the dental implants during the orthodontic treatment or after/during the jaw surgery? Thank you very much!

The two crowns fitted to my front teeth are too big, is there anything I can do?

Thursday, October 20th, 2011
Q.

Hi I had veneers fitted 15 years ago to close quite a large gap I had in my front teeth. I never thought of having a brace fitted at the time & thought this would be a quick fix to solve the problem. My dentist suggested I had crowns fitted as the veneers were continuously falling out. My front teeth look too big compared to the rest of my teeth & I am very self consious about this. I was wondering if there was any way these could be made to look smaller, or is there nothing I can do about this due to having crowns fitted. If this could be done would it be very expensive to correct.

Can you help me choose the right brace?

Thursday, September 1st, 2011
Q.

My wife has a 7mm overbit and slightlyl produding two front teeth, she does not have large gaps or crooked teeth, she visited the local Orthodontic practice, paid £150 and was advised to have Ceramic Braces top and bottom for £3000, with two upper extractions(one an old Crown). Invisilgn was ruled out as less effective. She visited her Dentist to have the extraction and was advised they could fit a Brace (Inman Aligner??)top and bottom, no extraction but file the teeth giving an almost as good a result in 4 months, £2400, she did not have extractions as she needed to think.Neither practice provides the treatment the other does and neither mentioned a lingual Brace (ingognito?). We now do not know what to do. She is slightly worried about the conspiciousness of the Ceramic train tracks, particularly on the bottom, but if the Inman aligner is less effective then why not opt for Invisilign, alternatively is an Incognito Lingual brace going to cost more than the £3000 for ceramic train tracks, we may have to pay another £150 just to find out!! Any advice more than welcome.

Should I have my polyp removed and be treated with veneers or braces?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011
Q.

Hello. I have what my dentist describes as a polyp on my upper inside lip which gets caught between the quite large gap between my two front teeth. They also protrude a little. This can be embarrassing and sore when speaking. My dentist suggested that I could have the polyp removed but unless I had two veneers on the front teeth it would probably return. Would this be a sensible course of action to undertake in your opinion or would a brace be more suitable? The front teeth are large to begin with. Thank you for your advice.

I have an underbite and have been recommended a pretty extreme procedure, do I have any other options?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

I have grade 3 malocclusion and underbite. I am 32 years of age and have recently had a consultation with Oral Maxillo Facial Surgeon who advised a Bilateral maxillary osteotomy.
It appears a pretty extreme operation and quite frankly I’m scared of having it.
What non- surgical alternatives are there which I could try? I’m seeing another dentist who does orthodontics next week and would like to know what I should be asking him as I really want to sort my underbite out as it causes discomfort and I have a crossbite at the back on the left where my teeth catch and grind.

Can I correct crooked teeth again – without braces?

Friday, April 15th, 2011
Q.

I went through quite extensive work as a teenager with fixed and removable braces. The after care was poor and 3 of my teeth are now misaligned again. One only slightly but the other 2 quite severely. Is there a way to receive treatment to correct these teeth without the need for braces again? I am now 27 and want to avoid this if at all possible.

What can I do to correct my weird rounded jaw and overbite?

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011
Q.

Hi. I’m 18 years old. My jawline has always been a little weird, it’s a lot wider than any other girls I’ve seen. The corners of my bottom jaw are rounded, if i feel the corners of my jaw, its like the bone is deformed. I have an overbite, and I’m embarassed of the way my face is. I also have really bad dark circles. I’ve sucked my fingers all my life, even when I was in my mom’s stomach. Is this why my jaw is the way it is? and can braces help?
