I have glue left on my teeth after brace removal what can be done?

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Q. Hello Dr Moore I have what seems to be glue left on my two centre top teeth from when my braces were removed when I was 17 (8 years ago). I presumed this would wear away with time but this has not been the case and now the surface of the teeth is very uneven. Not only this, but the bottoms of only these two teeth seem to be wearing away and are now almost transparent! I am very worried and these teeth are also extremely sensitive. Please could you tell me my options and is there anything to be done on the NHS, particularly as this seems to have been caused by my previous dentist?

A. The glue can be removed very easily by your dentist. The wear on the tips of the teeth is a separate issue. Try a desensitsing tooth paste such as Proenamel but also ask your dentist to check things over as you might be grinding your teeth at night to cause the wear in the 1st place.

Is it safe to have laser treatment to whiten my teeth after one has had radiotherapy

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Q. Hi Dr Moore I am enquiring if it is safe to have the cosmetic laser treatment to whiten my teeth after one has had radiotherapy on their face. This radiotharepay was due to oral cancer 7 years ago where I hade entry zones to the front and right side of my face. I also have reduced siliva flow but it is easily manageable with a good cleaning program. I am getting married soon and would like to try some sort of whitening for my teeth as at the moment I get a clean bill of health everytime I visit my dentist and he advises me to contact a specialist. Regards

A. I don’t think the whitening would cause any problems with your general health but it might be still worth asking the Oral Cancer Specialist just in case.

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Q. I got oral surgery a few years ago because my right k-9 was growing in the wrong direction(towards my front teeth), this was at the suggestion of my orthodontist. I have noticed that after the surgery I cannot move that area of my face the same as I could before. Is there a way to correct this?

A. it depends if there is any facial palsy although it seems odd this has only been noticed after a few years.
check with your dentist there are no other reasons

Is it possible to fully close the gap in my front teeth and what are my options to fix it?

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Q. Hello. I’m 20 years old and unfortunately have a large gap in between my two upper front teeth. The space is roughly 8mm in width so you can imagine my insecurities. I was wondering if it’s possible to FULLY close a gap that size and what my options are in fixing this problem. Thank you :)

A. Hi closing the gap with a brace maybe possible but will take a long time. You could try the brace and finish with veneers or bonding it the gap doesn’t close up completely

i have a crowded mouth could you tell me what type of brace i would need?

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Q. I have a very over crowded mouth and my top right front tooth over laps my top left front tooth. I get pain in my jaw and feel a pressure sensation all the time. I had 4 top back teeth out as a child to make more room. Could you tell me what type of brace I would need and if I would get this on the NHS? I have a 6 month old baby and have a maternity exempt certificate if this would help? Thank you.

A.

Your question can be answered by getting a referral to an orthodontic practice with an NHS contract with the local Promary Healthcare trust (PCT) . Contact the PCT for details of local practices.  Our practice offers private treatment options which might include clear orthodontic positioners with a likely cost of £2-4000.

i maintain good oral hygeine but still i have bad breath just after hours of brushing pls help

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Q. I maintain a very good oral hygeine but i usually have bad breath just after hours of brushing. I have used some of the expensive brands in the market but it still persist. Please give me a helping hand. Cheers

A. Bad breath is a condition called ‘halitosis’
It is often caused by poor oral hygiene, strong foods such as garlic and spices, drinking caffeine and alcohol can cause you to become dehydrated- reducing the saliva in your mouth- you need saliva to rinse the oral cavity from bacteria.
Also, smoking is a big factor.
You need to stress your concerns with your dentist and have regular hygiene visits. Hope this helps and thankyou for your enquiry.

I am 25 yrs old and how can I improve the damage I have caused in my gums?

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Q. Hi, I have previously suffered from gum disease that have left me with gaps between my teeth & pockets between my gum & teeth when viewed in an x-ray. I wish I had looked after my teeth better during my teens. I am now 25 & really want to improve my teeth apart from improved oral hygene how can I improve the damage I have caused. It makes me really sad.

A. the first treatment in all cases is to stop any further deterioration. This all boils down to you maintaining perfect oral hygiene.
Once stable veneers, periodontal (gum ) aesthetic surgery and bone & soft tissue grafting may all be possible.
Costs are too variable to quote.

Q. i work in a job wer cant brush teeth afta meals and i want strong molars to chew with ,afta meals feels like teeth they need brushing same with front tooth any advice.

A. Brushing thoroughly twice a day is usually sufficient and with regular visits with a dentist and hygienist. You could also chew sugar free gum after meals to stimulate saliva to make the teeth feel cleaner

I was wondering if one or two cigarettes would pose much of a risk to the 6 month braces treatment

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Q. Hi, I have just had “6 month” braces fixed. I’ve heard it’s not a good idea to smoke during orthodontic treatment as it could slow the straightening process, and also increases the risk of cancer due to restricting the blood flow in the mouth. I am not a heavy smoker and was wondering whether one or two cigarettes a day would not pose too much of a risk? Is smoking a definite no no?

A. Smoking regardless of whether you are wearing a brace carries a risk of cancer. With regard to your oral health smokers have a higher risk of gum disease and if you have any surgical procedure the healing process could also be effected because of restricted blood supply.

Smoking is not good for your general or oral health.

Kind regards

Could I have them repaired, and also have my bottom teeth done to blend in., Could you tell me what is the difference between these and venneers. Thank you

A. Crowns cover all the surfaces of your tooth whereas veneers generally just cover the front service like a facing.  You need to find out why the gums have shrunk back this could be due to plaque build up or that you grind your teeth possible at night.

If you have ad gum disease what can be done with your teeth

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Q. If you have ad gum disease what can be done with your teeth.I am desperate.

A. It depends on the severity.  The key is the amount of bone left around your teeth.  You need to find a dentist with a good hygienist first and have a consultation.

i suffer with gum desease which has resulted in my gum receeding

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Q. i suffer with gum desease which has resulted in my gum receeding, i am eager to dort them out and would be grateful if you could suggest anything to give me my confidence back.. thank you

A. Gum disease to occur you must have bacterial plaque on the teeth.
See a dentist to fully diagnose your particular problems. With luck they will formulate a plan to:-

Remove the factors that make cleaning difficult ( existing hard chalky deposits, poorly shaped fillings etc)

Demonstrate / teach you how to make the best use of the time you spend cleaning

Monitor & adjust the plan depending on your response.

Once you are stable you can look at the appearance if that is an issue.

For Home maintenance I personally like electric brushes such as braun oral-B. & interdental bottle brushes like Tepes. At the practice I prefer to use a dental Hygeinist for specialist cleaning.

I have bone loss of an 80 year old and i’m 46. What is the best treatment for me for teeth that are coming loose?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Q. I have bone loss of an 80 year old and i’m 46. On my back teeth the lower part of the teeth below the gum line is now visible. Apparently, I only have 40% bone holding my teeth. What is the best treatment for me for teeth that are coming loose? Thanks.

A. Hi You’ll need long term treatment with a gum specialist and hygienist, involving cleaning of the rots of the teeth. It may also be possible to use bone rebuilding techniques once the initial treatment has stabilised the condition
