Q. I have a gap on my bottom jaw. The 2nd tooth never grew when I was growing up. My dentist says I could have a bridge but I am reluctant to have good teeth either side filed down. The gap is not very big but is annoying and the tooth from the upper jaw is growing downwards to fill the gap. Would an implant work? I had an implant for a bigger missing tooth on the uppper jaw which is great but this gap is smaller.
A. If the gap is less than 5mm wide then an implant will not be possible. It which case a bridge might be the best alternative

Q. Hi doc, I am 25 year olf female. I had a filling done at the end of the jaw a month ago and did tooth cleaning. But apparently after the filling in last teeth upperjaw 2 teeth adjacent to it have become sensitive and cause pain when i chew. There should not be cavity coz i recently had a dental checkup. Only 1 teeth was treated that i already mentioned Is it coz i did cleaning and that has hurt my teeth ?
A. The area may need to settle or you may have to have the bite changed

Q. At approximately what age should treatment begin to widen the upper jaw of my son? His upper jaw is currently narrower than his lower jaw. May thanks, John
A. This treatment can start earlier than conventional orthodontics but varies according to the loss of teeth and the type of bite problem. You should be guided by your orthodontist for individual circumstances.

Q. Hello, I had my first crown installed over a tooth that had broken. I was not in pain, it was a tooth that had been filled years ago. The tooth is a bottom, left, two teeth back from the canine. In any event, I have developed a slight lisp since the installation and it appears that my upper teeth are tilted (with the right side being lower). I went back to the dentist, he said he sees nothing wrong but that he would redo the crown if I wanted. He also offered the explanation of perhaps that perhaps air is now channeling differently through my mouth due to the width of the crown being less??? Is thsi a common occurence?
A. not really, but as it is being redone I wouldn’t worry.

Q. Hiya, im 21 and have recently noticed that my lower jaw goes to right. I never really noticed it until it was mentioned to me about 6 months ago. I have tried looking on the net but all i can find is info on overbites, and nothing regarding anyone with there jaw going to the right. Best regards
A. This can be caused by asymmetirical growth of your jaw sometimes caused by trauma at a young age. If your teeth fit together corectly, the upper teeth being on the outside of the lower teeth the chin can be reshaped to improve the appearance by a plastic surgeon. I the teth do not fit together properly you may be able to have youtr jaw broken and repositioned correctly.

Q. Hi Dr. Moore, I,ve heard of a new type of expandable jaw retainer that you wear behind your teeth to widen a narrow smile. I’m very interested in learning more about this, but I’m having trouble finding any info on it. Is it just too new right now? If you know anything about this, I’ll take all the info/suggestions you have. How long do you think it would have to stay on? How much would it cost? What’s it called? Could any Dentist/Ortho do it? Also, are ALL dentist’s considered cosmetic dentist’s or should I look for one that specailizes in it. Thank You.
A. You should look for a dentist with experience in the field you are thinking of. These braces are a very traditional design and not new at all. Find a local Orthodontist and ask them for a consultation to see if its suitable.

Q. Dear Sir, I’ve been “selected” for a procedure that I am not familiar with and want to find out more information…I have been waiting for approval though a county dental facility to have the rods or implants for witch the denture can be attached to…My oral surgeon called and said that while I wait for the OK for those rods/ implants..He would like to perform something..I am not sure of the exact label for the surgery..it involves Lowering the floor of my mouth..? and building up mandibular area..they want to take a skin graft from my buttocks and use it as a graft for my mouth..They want to do this because my lower jaw was without a denture for 8 years..not that I didn’t have one but got poor dentistry at the time and it did not fit and cut me badly..result..stopped using lower denture to my detriment. Does any of this sound familiar to you..I am 56 years old and in fairly good health in spite of wheel chair status…part of the reason I am in a wheel chair and lost my teeth was because eight years ago I was misdiagnosed as having end stage breast cancer to the bone…I didn’t though but was placed in a Morphine induced comatose state for a year..till they figured out their mistake and withdrew the medications…however I lost most of my teeth..then when I woke up I had to have the rest of them removed…I need some direction here..I am scared to go under anesthesia for 2 hours! In addition I need to know the possible side effects for such a procedure. He said it would be that long…scares me when you consider all of the medical mistakes I have endured in one life time…maybe I am over thinking this..but I need to do research..But don’t no where to turn..he did say this procedure was a common one before implants…what is he talking about..I will have further instruction next week when I go in but want to be educated enough when I go to ask the right questions..Can you please direct me to some educational material..I would appreciate it. Thanks for your time.
A. Hello
This procedure effectively increases the height of the mandible by lowering the level of the tissues around it making the denture more stable and les likely to rub on the floor of the mouth, something that can still happen even if implants are used to anchor the denture. Its quite a complex procedure and not commonly used in dentistry these days. Talk things through with your oral surgeon agian the next time you see him i’m sure he will be able to give you a bit more information especially if he uses the technique a lot.

Q. i am 16, i have oesteoporsis and my bottom jaw is further forward than the top. my dentist had suggested breaking my jaw but with my oesteoporosis they think it would cause a lot of comlications so instead they are offering me fixed braces for two years and want me to write a letter telling them if i want this or not, i have read about the risk of pain and tooth decay if my teeth arent kept clean but i still would like normal teeth. I dont know how much fixed braces would improve my bite. And im not sure if it is worth the trouble because most people think i should just be happy with my teeth how they are and get used to it but what if im missing an oppertunity to have a good smile like other people.
A. Only you can decide whether the brace is worth doing from a cosmetic point of view but if it does improve your bite considerably then generally I would advise you to proceed with treatment

Q. I am 28, I had braces in my early teens to straighten my teeth and with the looks to have surgery to realign my jaws, my bottom jaw is to big and bits across to the left and my top jaw too small. I didnt go ahead with this. I now work ina job role that is customer facing – my teeth are alot straighter but def not like when i had the braces removed plus I have 2 unsightly canine teeth 3rd in on each side. My jaw really affects my breathing and is extremely prominent and my teeth just make me never what to smile. This has also been an issue of bullying as I grew up. I now want to get this sorted but really dont know how to go about it – was wondering if you know anyone who would be interested in using me as an example case as i am aware treatment can be very costly – I can forward pictures etc for ref. thank you.
A. It sounds like you will need Orthognathic surgery that might qualify for some NHS treatment. Perhaps you should see your dentist and ask for a referral to your local oral-maxillo facial surgeon

Q. I have always had a potruding lower jaw & due to being terrified of dentist since a child had neglected my teeth resulting in 4rs ago have the few teeth I had left being extracted & full dentures fitted, however my jaw is now potruding even more & making my profile very ugly I also need new dentures as my present ones are loose now, is there anything that can be done for me ?
A. Dentures will not correct you jaw position- but can help with the aesthetics of you smile and fill your face out- if it needs to be. there are options- but are very drastic measures. Orthodontics can work- aswell as surgery, but this is not something to go into lightly- and also can be a costly affair.
If you need new dentures, then I would see your dentist and have a new set constructed to your liking. With a new smile, half the battle is won. Hope you get it sorted.

Q. Hi, My jaw is getting stuck for some years now.that i face problem when I try to open my mouth. I have to give force and then after trying for some time it opens with some bone friction sound. The problem has started from when my last 4 teeth erupted at the two ends of my mouth.at winter time the problem becomes worse. I am now of 24 years old and for 1 year the problem has become bigger. I am feeling also pain when I am trying to open my mouth recently. But now one end jaw problem also has vanished. My teeth setting is not also correct. Please give me some advice that if I pick my end teeth out can the problem be solved.
A. The problem is much more complicated thatn that. I would seek the advice of a dentist who could refer you to the maxilo facial surgery department of your local hospital to invesigate the condition of your jaw joints
regards Andrew

Q. Hi there. Having done a little research into this, I’ve found out I have a class II div 2 (mal)occlusion. I’m keen to straighten my teeth but also to try and move my lower jaw forward a little, as it has a “weak” appearance in profile and gives me a double chin when I’m not even fat! I’m not sure how related this is to my teeth positioning, but it would be nice to try and tackle it. I’m wondering which methods are generally suitable for this tooth layout, and whether some might be more suitable for bringing my lower jaw forward, if that is indeed possible? Many thanks for your time.
A. Orthodontics can only improve the position of your teeth. If as you suggest the overall problem is the position of your jaws you may need other orthodontic appliances to try to move your lower jaw . This works best as we grow between 7-14 years old. If this is not possible the only option may be surgery to move the jaws.

Q. I have an elongated lower jaw and although I had orthodontic treatment as a child which corrected my bite, I hate the way I now look. My profile is awful and I was wondering if there is anything that can be done?
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, the next option would be surgery to decrease the length of your lower jaw, this would also help with the profile.
